Now it strikes me that when most people include defilers they are planning to use them as a chaos basilisk, but is there anything to be said for using it as a walking unit in its own right.
I mean, okay, it's only as tough as a dreadnought, and much more expensive, but it can waddle six inches and still fire the battlecannon, or its auxilliary weapons. What about using it like a leman russ rather than a basilisk?
I say this because, in small games, the long minimum range of an indirect fire defiler and the potential for scatter if it doesn't have LOS seem to seriously outweight its enormous cost.
Are there any upgrades you would give a defiler which wasn't built for indirect fire, what weapon combos work best? How would you use it most effectively while keeping it away from those lascannons and railguns?
I'd give it mutated hull and smoke launchers and keep the standard weaponry. If there's not much that'd seriously threaten it, I like to keep my defiler in plain sight too. It's a lot easier to hit things with the battle cannon that way. and indirect fire can be used to hit things hiding behind cover (like other defilers/basilisks/etc).
To avoid lascannons/railguns, you'll just have to stick to cover as much as possible (which is cool because it's a walker) and hope for the best. A lot of lascannon/railgun units tend to stay in one place and shoot, which means they can be avoided with good use of cover (assuming there's enough cover). Or, you could use one of my favorite tactics and make your own cover with some dead rhinos.
They make great distractions. Expensive ones but can you name one Chaos opponent who wouldn't take a shot at that thing given the chance?
Karnov let all of us fulfil our repressed dreams of being a fat Russian man running around in the great outdoors and getting shot at by weird stone heads and crap. You didn't have a repressed fantasy about doing such marvelous things? Well, I don't believe you . . . [djpretzel]
If u plan on moving, u can still give it only Indirect Fire and nothing else.
If u dont have targets for Barrage, letz fire it as an Ordnance!
For CC, consider Destroyer or Coruscating Warp Flame.
