Well, after my first 1v1 against a 1,500pt Eldar army i've discovered that you can be swamped and destroyed in a matter of turns.
Of course with the mighty Scorpion Super Heavy Grav Tank in his line up (in reserve too! it was a pretty one sided battle. Why? Because my greatest tank killing unit was my Defiler (which is loaded with upgrades to make it more unstopable). It managed to wipe out 5 Vibro Cannon crew (total of 3 vibro cannons) and withstood a multitude of vibro cannon shots, bright lance shots etc. But it was finally torn apart by a surprise Fire Dragon assault.
With my Defiler destroyed I knew I had lost.
So, I think in place of my Thousand Sons squad I should get a Tank Killer unit. Now, out of Terminators, Obliterators, Havocs, Predator or a Land Raider (quite big on points), what would you recommend?
I may go all out and slap a custom made (or representation) of a Chaos Warhound Titan to even things out, but at a good 800+pts it leaves the Eldar player alot of room to stick more things in.
BTW, when using minor powers, is it just a D6 roll on the grid of your psykers mark? or is there more involved?
As far as troop killing is concerned, Eldar are no threat to me... but the squad vapourising Scorpion is...
I'd have to say that obliterators are my anti anything weapon of choice, they have a huge potential, and in my experience they usually out do themselves (even at 70pts each), I find that 3 lascannons usually get's rid of vehicles in one turn (but not those damn wraithlords). I also find it amazingly funny deep striking them behind a tank (a hammer head in my case) and blowing it to bit's, then survive the shooting from the next turn (a 2+ save and 5+ invulnrable see's off most things) only to either carry on blasting things away, or charge in (with power fist's they can cause a lot of damage).
OMG! OMG! OMG! Hardcore lol... squad of 3 yeah? £30 is kinda steep for three guys but damn it sounds worth it ...
£30 is steep (I managed to con my parents into getting me three last christmas), but in my experience they pay it back every single game. because they can get whatever weapon they need, they're always in the right place at the right time.
for instance, fighting Tau (which I do often, so I'm quite knowledgable on the subject). Oh no, a hammer head, 3 lascannons later...........
oh no, hordes of fire warriors, 3 heavy bolters later.........
oh no, battle suits, either 3 twin linked melta guns or 3 twin linked plasma guns later.......
you get the picture.
and then those annoying wraithlords get it (3 lascannons a turn will deal with a wraithlord in 2 turns (or one if you're lucky)).
Space marines are toast as well (plasma guns)
and then if they get caught in combat, most shooty units would be dead after a few turns at best, wheras obliterators not only survive, but often fight back (eventually beating most opponents, though you have to look out for terminators.............if you don't get them with rapid fireing twin linked plasma guns first).
so they are the troop for any situation (and deep strike helps).
I will admit that a unit of havoks with 4 lascannons is good for getting rid of vehicles etc, as is a predator. But these are both expensive and easier to get rid of than the obliterators.
even in small battles (500 or so points) I take three, because at that level there's nothing going to stop them from smashing through the entire enemy army.
Go with the oblits. Nice and flexible.
iron warriors can have 9
Hate to disagree but I will anyway,
Oblits are flexible but that wasnt what you were after, even worse, because they are flexible and those plasma cannon present a risk to all and sundry they are always prime target and given the toughness, they can pretty much be wounded by everything. (not easily admitedly)
for tank killing power, take a tank hunter - i.e. a pred, give it TL las cannon and las cannon side sponsons and let rip
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I'd have to agree with Cheredanine, they are always first to be shot at and they aren't all that great at taking it. If you really wanted to use them you could use something diversionary, like Daemons, to take up the bullets so you can unleash them.
Actually a rather nice/nasty thing to do is field 3 Preds AND 3 Obs.
That WOULD work, if I had a) lots of dosh and the points .
There is also the problem that although Oblits sound great vs. vehicles, this is a Super Heavy Tank we're talking about! If I Deep Striked behind it and opened fire with lascannons, what are the chances of a destruction?
