Hey all, I'm planning on starting a chaos army but I don't know where to begin or what to collect as I have no Idea about chaos or how they work. I'm kinda leaning towards a Word Bearer or World Eater army. All I really want is an army with some Daemons (Bloodletters and a tasty daemon prince for sure), A tooled up Lord etc. And some good fire support whatever that may be. And I want the list to be competitive (The players at my GW are somewhat, seasoned veterans) Also I have no Idea if the models stated above would even go in the same list together let alone work well in the same list. Sorry about all the questions but im being honest in saying I have completely no Idea as I have just come from collecting a Tau army.
Some help would be greatly appreciated
yaaay a question i can answer
To begin with pick up a copy of the Chaos Space Marines Codex
This will explain to you the differences betwen the different chaos marine chapters.
World Eaters can field everything you stated above, (Just note that the Daemon Prince *is* a tooled up Lord, so it counts as the Chaos Lord Spot) however due to the fact that they cannot use havocs or Obliterators you might be kind of hard pressed for fire support.
Hmm i'm not too sure about world bearers, but if my theory is correct (which GOD i hope it is :w00t: ) World Bearers cannot summon a Bloodthirster. This is because the only mark they can carry is the mark of Chaos Undivided and in order to summon a Greater Daemon (Daemon of Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch, and Slaanesh) you need to have a unit bearig the mark of their respective deities. Let me know if i am correct anyone?

If you want a really good looking army, you may wish to look at thousand sons. They are without doubt one of my favourite armies, though they are difficult to play. Chaos is my next intended collection, though I may do Iron warriors. Tough as anything and shooty to boot. Chaos are immensly rewarding to play, and are surprisingly different to SM. Coming from a Tau background, you will find they seem a little inflexible and slow. But with all those 3+ svs, who cares !
You can summon any type of GD if you have the MoCU, however I think that WE can't summon GDs. Don't remember where I saw it, although the fluff in the codex hints at it (but it's not a rule there. I'm not saying the codex says you can't, because it doesn't. Look somewhere else!).
The chaos codex is a must (duh?) as the rulebook no longer has simplified lists. And while yes, it does help you understand the difference between legions, it doesn't help you very much. The patron legions (WE, DG, EC and TS) rules are very confusing at first, especially the 'pure' lists.
One other thing to mention, you don't want a tooled-up lord and a greater daemon in the same list, because it's silly and will waste a lot of your points. 1500 point game, those 2 will come to nearly a third of it. HALF in 1000.
Once you get yourself a codex and a few basic units, write yourself some 'test-run' lists based around the legion you like the look of most and post them here. From what you said below World Eaters would be good for you. Lots of daemons, but not very much on the table to start with. But if you make what you want help with more specific, then there will be more helpful advice available.
Hmm, what do you mean by WE not able summon a GD? They can summon the Bloodthirster.
If you mean World Bearers, then they can summon any GD.
GDs can possess a single Aspiring Champion in the army list, bearing the Mark of Chaos
Undivided, or the Mark of its own patron god.
start by picking up the chaos battleforce and the codex that will givwe you pleny of options and alot of base line models to get started. if you want a chance to summon any deamon then i suggest trying chaos undiveded.
Its a really good place to start so you have choices to play many different deamons and lords and find what works best fopr you.
and so i stand corrected =D
