are bikers really worth their points in an undivided army? i know that in khorne and other cult armys they can be quite usefull.but in an undivided army with an aspiring champ are they worth their points?
I have to say that - YES - my chaos bikes work wonders. I personally thought they were overpriced and useless when I was playing third. However, when I transitioned to fourth edition I began using a lot of infiltrators and little HS. Then I started with 2 squads of 4 bikes each with an icon (I use a lot of Daemons) and 2 Melta Guns. This offered a lot of versatility. However, I found they did lack oomph and got isolated and killed easily. Now I use one squad of 8 with 2 melta guns, icon and AC w/ PF, Daemonic Mutation and Daemonic Visage. Now, it might seem a little pricey but it's my "Jack of all trades" unit. With turbo-boost it can get around faster than anything else in the codex.
The trick is that using the bikes requires a little finesse to get the most out of them. I personally love turbo-boosting straight at ordinance, starcannon batteries, D-cannons (as the bikes get invuls and my troops don't) and Banshees (Banshees HATE T5). On the other hand, moving and shooting from outside 12" is great against Orcs and Tyranids. Just do not (and I repeat DO NOT) expose them to large volumes of fire or you're wasting points. As for more standard battlefield practices, the meltas/PF threaten tanks and the rapid fire/charge/PF combo shreds troops.
So try them out for certain. Just don't give up on them if they let you down at first (and make sure they have a PF, trust me!)
I play night lords and use 1 or 2 squads of bikers. I'm not sure what are the "best practices" with bikes, but I like to use them as tank hunters in a group of 3 (2x melta + ACower fist). I tried them as fast support for my footslugers, but the results aren't so good. I don't know what is best to do with them. As tank hunters, they usualy live long and destroy many undesirable units. I was planning to send them against big monsters, see what they can do.

I am gonna go out on the limp and say that groups of fours may work. I am not fond of bikers though, but as a fear tactic, two groups of 4 bikes and a filled out squad of raptors just might throw off the ol opponent
