I'm getting close to finishing my Iron Warriors and I need to make my final decisions on an HQ. I currently am running a daemon prince that looks as follows
2 x CCW
He had d.strength and bionics (Ok, I gave it to him because it would be fun to model) and Mark of Chaos Undiviced. But I dropped that and an oblit to add a unit for close combat with meltas and infiltrate. I'm looking at it and I think I can squeeze another unit out if I change him to just a lt with a kai gun.
I'm more or less just wondering what people think and opinions. I've got the rest of the army pretty much tooled as I would like. The extra 70 points or so would be nice to fill some units out...but I just don't know if the Lt. is going to do much. I have had success with the Daemon Prince...also had him killed outright by a rail gun.
They both have their advantages. I rather like your lord combo, though he'd be much badder with infiltration, but at the same time a Lt with a Kai gun seems like a nice, efficient choice. Stick him in a squad with a few plasma or melta weapons and watch marines vaporise when you start firing.
It really all depends on the rest of your army. If the rest of your army is pure shooting, then a CC monster prince won't cut it. To make him effective you'll need him in CC as soon as possible, at which point he'll die without any proper back up. But if you have a few core CC units, he could be worthwhile.
I dislike the Shooty Kai Gun HQ units. They seem like a waste to me.
I prefer a cheap counter charge unit instead. Terminator Armour, Power weapon or Dark Blade and a few cheap gifts. Maybe even give him the Kai Gun if you opt to. Then he can intercept fast charge units and still contribute to the army as a whole without making himself a huge target.
I'd go with the Chaos Lord. Generally, Iron Warrior armies have mostly firepower, so a counter charge unit can come in handy.
Even a cheap close combat geared Lt. can work well. Caluin pointed out a cheap option that you could go with, so I'd consider it.
The Daemon Prince you have listed looks pretty good, but if you added Infiltrate to it you have the possibility of a first turn charge which can really throw your opponent off - especially sense he'll be thinking about being shot at; not assaulted.
Edit: Hmm, I guess you can't take Infiltrate and D. Stature, so never mind about giving infiltrate to the chaos lord.

The Lord seems a pretty good choice. If you want the kai gun lieutenant, I agree with GM. Put him in a squad that can deal some serious shooting damage.
One thing I do have to point out though, is infiltrate can not be given to anyone with daemonic stature... :shifty:
''It begs the question; why would the emperor permit something quite so dangerous and untamed to exist? And that would be to take down another Space Marine Legion."
just to throw a spanner among the works here but you cant have 2 ccw's on a lord. you cant take multiple items from the armoury. You can of course model 2 ccw's then put a pouch on his armour or something and claim theres a pistol inside. Not many people would object though.
I think unstatured lord /w kaigun, power fist and maybe terminator armour would be best.
Check out my Codex: Farmyard Animals here!
If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
Here is the thing with the terminator armoured guy. You want to give him some type of extra movement, speed to me is the best option better cost and to me a better ability. You almost have to give him rune otherwise any space marine/chaos space marine with a powerfist will insta-kill him. And you are already at 135 points. Or am I just being over analytical(sp?). if it was 3rd edition where you could pick out the powerfist or high strength guys it wouldn't bother me so much.
I do like the idea of a non-statured close combat lord though. Makes it a lot easier to keep him out of harms way and still getting the job done.
PS...I would kill for a statured infiltrating lord
Thanks for the input everybody and by all means keep it coming.
Most SM's powerfists would come at strength 8, which isn't enough to instnat kill the Daemon Prince with D. Stature.
He meant the Terminator-Armoured, non-Statured Lord, which could be insta-killed with Powerfists.
On the other hand, because of Terminator Armour, it can only move like Infantry.
