Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have been a long time Tyranid player, but recently my eyes have been drifting off to the Chaos stuff. My Nid army is nearly complete and I have been looking to start a second army so I could switch off and not become bored by playing the exact same thing over and over. So I have come to you all for suggestions on starting a Chaos army.
First I would like to say that my gaming group already has a Death guard player so that option is out of the question. Also, since I already play nids anything that is mostly CC, like Khorne for instance is also out.
I dont have any models yet and would like to get an idea before even remotely thinking about buying anything. I am kinda leaning towards Slannesh or Undivided mainly because Tzeentch might be a tad complicated with all the Psychic power rules for how I like playing.
If anyone out there can give suggestions, even for a starting 500point army, please write the feedback. I know that the basic army box would be a better deal, but if I am never really gonna use something Id rather not buy it at all. Besides there is always Ebay for purchasing if money is a tad tight.
We get this question at least once a week. The answer is always the same. Look over the Codex and make sure you know what you're getting into. Chaos has a huge amount of options - even more than avaliable to Tyranids. It's like having your pick of nine different armies.
Once you've picked which legion suits you and your playing style, invest into a moderately priced Chaos Lt, probably nothing more than a Dark Blade + BP/CCW and Aura, and then two squads of Chaos Marines. For the HQ, don't buy the stock model. Converting your own is the best choice, as we have no decent models with an appropriate selection of wargear.
As for the Battleforce box, it's not our best option. While the Battleforce boxes are great for most armies, for Chaos it only really works if you're playing Black Legion as they're the only ones able to field both regular CSM and Berzerkers. If you're going with any other legion, or deciding not to use Berzerkers (or even the Defiler), then you're better off purchashing models in other places.
Yes sorry about that Caluin. I should have read the stickies. It looks like though from reading it, that a Black legion army is the best to start off with. Atleast to about 1000points or so.
My only thing is this. lets say I do get a black legion army, then want to expand it, but have already modeled an painted it like a black legion. How do I undo it without having to remodel and paint the whole thing?
No worries - I just linked those so you had other resources to look at as well.Originally Posted by Tragedy316
Black Legion is definetly the best to start with, as it gives you all the options to play around with. From there you can decide what units you do or don't like and pick your final legion, even if it's staying with Black Legion. The paint isn't an issue. There is no rule that states that certain legions need to be painted a particular way. For example, I play an Alpha Legion list, but they're painted in Iron Warriors colours.Originally Posted by Tragedy316
The modeling is a different issue. You may end up with models that you can't use, so I always suggest finding some friends that don't mind letting you proxy a few games before investing into models.
I chose my legion by proxying some of the special characters: The special characters basically embody what you get when you go that particular legion, and so by finding which of them you like, you can pretty much decide on a legion (so long as it is DG, WE, EC, or TS).
That's how i went Slaanesh: I LOVE Lucius. He is basically the extreme aspects of slaanesh, and so from him, I found that I like having high I, and leadership-based things.
