Hello, I've been reading the chaos book all day and boy is it rather confusing and odd. You see I wanted to play WH 40k, so I've been looking at armies and army books. I have narrowed the choices to chaos and HW. But the more I read of chaos the better I like it, plus the miniatures are cool as hell . Anyway back to the point, I have noticed that the chaos army in WH 40k is WAY diferent that the chaos army in wh fantasy. In fantasy they where the most expensive overtly broken with almost no tactics army in the game (IMHO). Which I do not like, but here they are totaly diferent. Granted that they are still a sturdy high stats humans, they are not too diferent from the space marines.....actualy they are cheaper if I'm not mistaken.
I have gotten a fealing that the chaos army is heavely tactics oriented, and the multitude of army lists only ads to its diversity.
So my question is: More than likely I will be playing chaos, but i want to make sure they aren't some space thugs with big guns. And secondly I want to play with the Thousand Sons. So what do you recomend me to buy at starters? So I dont end up spending money on some units that I'll never end up using....which is the case of my greatswords in warhammer fantasy
So if you could some how orient me to what units to buy, because I don't have a lot of money
and what I do have I want to spend on units that I'm actualy going to use. Plz help me, chaos is complex beyond a noobs skills. Thanks for any info you put in.
Also another question, the Iron warriors have a rather cool armour but I can't see them in the GW online store, is their armour just like the other chaos space marines just painted diferently or is it truly diferent?

I can't tell you what to buy for a 1k sons army, l play slaneesh EC.
A basic starting point is a leut and two units of CSM.
I like chaos because you can 'modify' your figures and make them look even more
The codex does look confusing, but have a read of a the FAQ on this forum and some of the threads, they are excellent tatics and rules explenations from experienced players. like Caluin, lordlink, DP exerion and a host of others. this bit of research will pay dividents in understanding the codex (it did for me)
anyhow I will now pass you over, someone from the 1k army I'm sure will help you further
in your path to the dark and fun side.
Cool thanks, It doesn't matter if you dont play 1k sons. I'm not golden set on them so the info on any army list is greatly apreciated . Also isn't it realy expensive point wise to play with EC, WE, 1k sons and death guard as all units have to include the mark of their respective chaos god? The more I read the more confused I get:wacko:. But I definatly like it, choices choices choices. They make the game fun.:w00t:
Whilst you do pay more for the marks, I think the benefits outweight the costs.
in EC its access to sonic weaponry, combat drugs, warp scream and warp amp make it
attractive. (plus the idea of a crazed bunch of over stimulated soldiers is soooooo cool.)
each of the other armies has something similar. something they have they no one else can get.
so mark = penalties and bonuses. your choice is wether to you the bonuses are worth the penalties. most specific armies like me chose for fluff (like the deathguard player cos he thinks the pluage marines look cool, I like the drugged up pretty boyz) or for the combat abilities like khorne
It is difficult because chaos is so very very vesitile both on look and tactics (hey its choas who needs tactics chaos is ....well choatic)
plus modelling the figures....have a look at some of the pics of various lords and leuts. some are just out there in look. damned awesome.
oh and ask questions. the guys here love answering them, and debating them and helping you in your path to the choas gods.
slaneesh players. where's the booze and drugs man..
If you want 1000 Sons buy a couple box sets of their warriors, some sorcerors and some thralls. These are used heavily in almost every 1000 sons list (Just check the Chaos Army Lists section)
Then maybe buy a lord then write a list of 750 or 1000 and post it here so we can help you.
Iron Warriors have the same armour as every other CSM just diiferent options and rules.
CSM cam be shooty, mixed, or close combat oriented, its really up to you. Before you buy anything I suggest you play a quick game proxying some models as thousand sons and see if you really want them. If you decide you do want them first you should buy 2 boxes of thousand sons and a sorceror for an HQ. If you decide you want to do something else, such as iron warriors, you should buy 2 CSM boxes and an Chaos lord either from a blister or scratch built. Scratch built is the better wat to go if you have time and money. So my question is: More than likely I will be playing chaos, but i want to make sure they aren't some space thugs with big guns. And secondly I want to play with the Thousand Sons. So what do you recomend me to buy at starters?
On to your question about Iron Warriors, a while back they made a limited edition IW box set so if you can get your hands on that your a lucky one, if not here is a list of the specific IW pieces that you combine with the CSM box set,
Alternativly you can use iron hands bitz or just paint the normal CSM's in IW colors.

Cool thanks for the advise DP.
I was looking though the the GW online store and saw that a megaforce is available. The megaforce contains 12 marines, 8 korn berserkers, 3 bikes (are this any good?), 1 rhino, and one chaos defiler for $140. Which is cool, but it doesn't get me closer to playing with the 1k sons.
Also I came up with an alternative
2 CSM for a total of 16 units, 5 raptors, 1 defiler, 1 rhino for $180.....expensive and again doesn't really help me with the thousand sons
But following DP's advise I can take 2 boxes of thousand sons marines, 2 chaos sorceres for about $100 which is more accesible, but I couldn't find the trhalls . So what else would I need to start playing Chaos Thousand sons?
And it would be 2 packs of CSM and one lord at $62 if I wanted to play another faction like Iron Warriors. Boy I'm liking chaos more with every post its very wallet eficient
Of course this would be to strat on later come the terminators and so forth
Thanks on the info on the Iron warriors I was wondering why I couln't see them.

The codex and a list on this site.
What you have listed is all you need to start, Later you can expand to chosen terminators, more 1k sons, a predator, or a defiler. 1k sons are limited to what they can take so you will probably use a lot of normal infantry, although 2 wound can be really, really nasty.

Especially with 24 inch range boltguns and you can do this while moving and 2 pschic powers a turn.
