well the other day I played my first chaos battle against the Tau. I won by annihilation. But as soon as the prince hit the field he was fire magnet central.
My question is are Chaos Hounds worth the points to help suck up a few wounds to let the prince live one turn so he can make it into CC?
personally, I like them. Abalative wounds with a bite.
Also they move as fast as the lord even if he flies or has demonic speed... your lord DOES have demonic speed right?
Of course, too many of them will get expensive, but that applies to everything, especially landraiders.

No, the Hounds will only be a detriment.
Assuming your Prince has Stature, and that you've given him Daemonic Resilience, that means your Toughness 6 is now a Toughness 4 for as long as there is a single Hound left alive. Instead of Fire Warriors wounding on a 5+, they'll now wound on a 3+.
Besides, you want your Lord to be a fire magnet. He can sustain far more punishment than any other unit in your list, which means more of the rest of your army makes it into Close Combat unharmed.
Mindraked put out a good tactica on psyching people out with chaos, if you havent read it, go do so now. you could try getting a relatively cheap demon prince (RELATIVELY) and give him some nice armor and stature and make him look very mean and everything. so while the tau are busy trying to cap the big scary looking demon prince, which actually won't be very worthwhile to cap, the rest of your army can pleasantly stroll up and crack some blue heads.
The best plan I have for daemon princes is to use them to soak up the firepower. They are slow killers - only a hanful of men a turn. It's the little minions that do the damage.
They're 200 point beasts that can absorb 1500 points worth of Firepower.
