hey.. im a noob and im thinking of starting a chaos army due to all the customization and i was wondering how i should start
i either want to do khorne or nurgle because my friend is already doing tzeencth(?) so any help with starting my army or other suggestions would be appreciated
Welcome to the dark side.
First you must answer these questions:
What kind of icing do you like on your cake?
How would you dispatch of an enemy cow farmer?
What's the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything?
Once you've done that, forget about everything I just said and pick up the Chaos Codex. Its chock fullo information. Once you've flipped through the Codex, make a list of Legions (Khorne, Nurgle, Alpha Legion, Iron Warriors, ext.) that appeal to you. Then it's up to you to decide.
Personally, I started with Chaos Undivided, because you get a taste of all the units. I then moved to Khorne. Good Luck.
Chaos Undivided: 9/3
Chaos Khorne: 6/0 [ Undefeated=) ]
Necrons: Seriously, I stopped counting.

"When they kick at your front door,
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head,
Or on the trigger of your gun?"
First off man, forget Cult armies! Think about what units you'd like to use them decide if a Cult army is your thing. Its much better that way. Then, if you decide you don't Obliterators or Raptors, look at a Cult army.
Then when you are at this step of looking at a cult army, ask yourself this question, do you want to be brute-force, finesse, extreme toughness, or stoic? Brute force is Khorne, finesse is Slannesh, extremely tough is Nurgle, and stoic is Tzeentch.
Pros of picking a cult army are free Aspiring Champions and better daemon rolls. Then you have to look at their draw back (you look them out, their in the codex so learn to read it).
Here's another suggest: go undivide dand combine this aspects for stratergy usage.
It's up to you now.
Welcome to the Eye, Admiral. May the Chaos Gods not turn you into a rabid chicken.
First off, check through the Codex at the various rules and units, specifically Obliterators and Raptors. These are the two units no cult army can have, so if you like them alot, forget Khorne and Nurgle and go with Undivided. If you want to pass on those oblits and raptors, think generally about your personality. If you are of the howling, constantly angry, aggressive sort that didn't get enough love as a child, go with Khorne and be prepared for nothing but close, chainaxe flinging combat. :w00t:
Nurgle cults also have a pair of legs up on most other armies in CC, having both extra toughness (even though one extra point doesnt look like much it makes them REALLY tough wherever, whenever.) and the Nurgles rot ability that can kill models near them with a plauge. However, Nurgle marines do have limitations on their heavy weapon selection, so if you want things to blow up in sparkly lights, you'll be dissapointed.
Thats all I've got. If you run a seach I believe there is a thread about the various abilities of all the Chaos armies. Might even be stickied.
Oh, and maverick, 33 + the sacred number of Tzeench. Duh.
But we'll never survive!
Nonsense. You're only saying that because no one ever has.
I think you should do nurgle if yoiur going to get the deamon prince because the plague sword dosent allow any invunerable saves. So it's like a force weapon without the psycic part but if your a lover of close combat get khron.
My chaos army is iron warriors because i live shooting but i ws going to plar nurgle but each guy was to manay points for me and the color sceem was horrible

Based on my experience, You should start to play chaos before choosing a specific army. Chaos is a little tricky and Playing a specific army in the beginning might be a little hard. Ok, it's true that nurgle is easier to play than Tzeentch, but that's not the point. As long as you don't know chaos, you won't understand what suits you best.
For myself, I satrted with a black legion and then I wnt with Nurgle, Khorne, I converted My black Legion into Alpha legion, I started a Night Lord army and I'm currently building Tzeentch Thousant Sons and Emperror childrens. Each army has it's flaw and bonusses, but in the end I found myself Liking more Nurgle than Khorne and More Alpha Legion than Night Lords.
Now you don't have to buy all those army to understand chaos, but i believe you should play it genericaly before chosing your real army.

Mr windbender, you may want to think about getting a spellchecker too. Or at least pretend to make an effort.
There’s been a lot of these “I’m noo, wich kaos Rme can I w00t mi black templar friend with they’re so unfair I wanna pwn dem”
Type threads recently.
I know there’s a couple of threads like start to finish etc, but to be honest they’re pretty scatty and a new person doesn’t really gain anything from them.
There’s nothing wrong with being new or asking for help, but I think it will really help if there’s a simple clear thread which they can be referred to, that they might get a good idea about what type of force they want to field ant ‘neat’ tricks they can do (I feel sick saying that).
There’s nothing wrong with asking for specific help against certain forces either.
Mindraked, can't you write a guide with Cal or something? I would, but I don't have the necessary experience to do it. And I'm lazy like a sloth on morphine.

First of all buy a bunch of regular Marines and Rhinos, you can't go wrong with that purchase. I don't know about you, but I and my many other CSM friends can't get enough plasma weapons so stock up on those too.
Don't paint 'em yet. I highly suggest going about playing with your friends so they can allow you to proxy your stuff until you find what you like. The problem with Chaos is that it has SO MANY customizing options available and so many freakin' legions that you will have a LOT of work on your hands if you start changing your mind after the fact. It'll look a whole lot nicer if you finally decide on a legion and they are the proper color and all themed. (The best part of CSM is the painting and having the potential for the nicest, most original looking army in a tourney. If you enjoy conversions you have come to the right place.)
You also can't go very wrong buying a unit of each of the Gods' warriors. Running a Black Legion has the great advantage of being able to have Berzerkers and/or Plague Marines as backup to your veteran troops. And it just looks Chaotic (in a good, fluffy way.) to see the different gods represented.
From there you play small games with your friends, proxy what you want to try, then if you find you really love that squad of Plague Marines marching down the field you can buy another box; and begin your path down plague, pestilence, and Rot. Or if you love how those Khornate chainaxes grind through power armor, get another box of Berzerkers.
EDIT: Just don't pick Iron Warriors if you want to keep your friends Just kidding
