Alright so it's my first post but then I'm just starting to get into this game. Been collecting chaos models on EBay as well as picking up a few from the store. Now I plan on going with a Death Guard specific army one day, but for now, I don't have many Death Guard models. So until I collect a few more, I just plan on playing Black Legion.
My question is however, what are the limitations to playing the Black Legion? I know I can take units of Berzerkers and Noise Marines and such if I pay the cost for the mark but they count as Elite selections and I'm told that you can dedicate vehicles to whatever god if you pay the cost for the dedication. I'm confused though about HQ choices. Does the Lord choice for your army have to be Chaos Undivided? What about a Lieutenant?
A lot of people think that if your HQ has a specific mark, rather than undivided, then the army must be a cult army, this is NOT the case.
Remember, with Chaos there's a lot of freedom, and the only restrictions are Khorne -> Slaanesh and Nurgle -> Tzeentch.
Naturally, this only applies to marked HQs. If you have an undivided HQ then you can field any type of unit.
You're spot on with the Elite section part
The Lieutenant can be any mark he wants, so long as it's not contrasting with the Lord.
If you field two Lieutenants, then the one who costs more will count as HQ.
Black Legion is incredibly flexible, as you also get to field raptors, obliterators (hurrah) and bikes without question.
The only thing you miss out on is, free aspiring champs (meh) summoning roll bonuses (if you like daemons) and interesting vet skills that the other legions have.
Personally, i'm very fond of fielding an elite unit of Death Guard or Noise Marines in an undivided army. You're paying just the same amount of points and they really have an edge.
Good luck, and welcome back to Chaos!

Thanks for the reply. Not only am I new to Chaos, but I'm new to the game entirely. It's fun and interesting stuff. But right now, my plan was to field an Undivided Daemon Prince for my HQ and a Chaos Sorceror Lieutenant marked for Tzeentch as my second HQ choice. Is this legal?
As for the models that I actually HAVE to work with. It's kind of a mess of different models but that's EBay shopping heh. Just getting what I can if it's a good price.
1 Daemon Prince
1 Chaos Sorceror
16 Chaos Space Marines
13 Space Marines (I can use as "converts")
2 Chaos Space Marines Special Weapons
1 Chaos Icon Bearer
5 Chaos Raptors
1 Chaos Predator
2 Chaos Dreadnaughts
1 Night Lord Hero
1 Plague Marine Champion
1 Typhus the Nurgle Lord
8 Seperate Nurglings
Any suggestions on what YOU'D do with this selection for a 1500 point army aligned with any faction?
Nothing wrong with having 2 HQ choices with different marks, so long as they aren't opposed ones. Your DP could be anything except nurgle and you could still keep the Tzeentch Lt. Look on page 34 I think of the codex, it tells you there about mixing legions. It's the page before the books of chaos (with the rules for the original traitor legions).
As for what to use, stick to one mark and the mark of chaos undivided as a rule of thumb. Too much variation and it'll just look a mess.
