Well, first things first......i play daemonhunters!!
I know, i know...blasphemy and suchlike, BUT, i also play dark elves and hordes of chaos in fantasy and have decided to try my hand at a good old fashioned black legion army.
Well, a couple of questions then,
1- What is (in your esteemed opinions) the best starting point for a black legion general.
2- Is abbadon worth the purchase?
3- How do you (and i have this one answered from the other end) propose i beat my own daemonhunters army?
Suggestions on any/either of the questions most welcome,
1. Chaos lord, 2 boxes of CSM's, and an obliterator or two.
3. Equip your marines with infiltrate and plasma guns and rapid fire the grey knights to death. Daemonettes and Bloodletters also work remarkably well with rending and power weapon attacks.

First of all, black legion is so flexable with the style and feel you can accomplish with them that I think trying to figure out what "style" of black legion you would like to field is the first place to start. This can be answered by asking yourself, is there a specific skill or troops choice that you would like to field? For example, khorne and nurgle are a popular combinations of troops. It sets the tone for feel of your army. Do you want to play a mostly or all "undivided list"? that is fine too, but really the first step is to decide which direction you would like to run the list. But as helbrecht said, a few boxes of chaos space marines really can't go wrong. they contain the perfect number of guys and have the necessary goodies to make them effective right out of the box- 8man squad with an aspiring champion with powerfist and bingo you have an effective squad.
As for the HQ, I would steer clear of the lord in the blister pack he comes with a power fist so do not use him. The best way to get a good lord is to design him on paper and convert him up. Loyalist space marine commanders are good starter points and then file off any eagles and put chaos-esq markings on them and they do great to begin with.
2 chaos space marine squads and a HQ(sound familiar?) is enough to play a 500pt even up to a 750pt game depending on marks and options you put on them so I would start there and play around with the type of army you want to assemble and THEN start to expand.
Abbadon is an excellent general for points cost/what you get, but you can certainly make a lord that is cheaper with a more focused purpose that will suit your army better.
I hope this helps, I pose a lot of questions because if you think of it, and design it, then it will truely be your army and you will have just that much more fun with it.
W/D/L Eleventy trillion billion/NONE/ NONE - I am STILL rulezor!
WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
I suggest you get two boxes of Chaos Megaforce (can be found on ebay for 120 dollars)Originally Posted by Captain.Snowball
This includes 2 defilers, 6 bikes, 24 guys (4 Champions), 2 Rhinos, and 16 Berzerkers. Then you go online and get sprues for a Predator(s). Up to you. This is a good fighting force.
1-A good General is a Khorne DP, these guys help you win it like no ones business. I painted my in reds, so it can be either Undivided or Khorne. I have another that will be my Slannesh DP, that's another story...
2-As for Abaddon, I suggest you get him when you finish your Black Legion, set them all up and have him at the head of it, take a picture and be proud of it.
3-Plasma guns melt through Daemonhunters like a warm knive through butter. And Black Legion Khorne guys equiped with Khornate Chainaxes cut through them Termies very nicely.
On the megaforce front,
I want to try and keep the army as undivided as possible.
I play Slaaneesh in fantasy but i find 40k to be radically different in terms of the marks.
Thanks for the help so far guys,
Just keep your chaos lord undivided, then you can select different cults with impunity - should you be so inclined. just make sure to keep 1 Elite slot free for your obliterators.

YOu can take Berzerkers as a Elite option, they are some of the best CC against power armor remember that.
How do you feel about daemons and vehicles?
For Heavy Support the 3 best options are a Predator w/lascannons, Defiler, Havocs w/4 Autocannons.
For Fast Attack I would use either bikes to pop tanks or daemon bomb, Furies, or Raptors w/infiltrate and/or furious charge.
