I'm considering fielding Abaddon in a 2k force, and would be interesed to hear people's opinions on him. Is he useful or useless?
I've already read a host of Librarium posts concerning him, but none really answered my question.
hmmm, I've never seen him in action before so I'm not sure. He doesnt seem anything spectacular and despite the fluff Eldard Ulthran would own him.
Overall I don't like any characters in the chaos codex. Chaos are the number 1 fluff army. They have by far and away the most fluff and fiction potential and probably the most conversion and painting ones. By taking Abaddon your limiting yourself to a premade black legion and I just don't think thats worth it regardless of how good he may or not be.
As for your actual question some other members will have to answer that.
Check out my Codex: Farmyard Animals here!
If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
It has been a long time sicne I saw a Black Legion in action since most people don't like the "mix-and-match" approach of the BL. They prefer to go for one or very rarely two marks of chaos or flavour deamons.
Abaddon is certainly a very tasty lord, very hard to kill, especially with a retinue. some of his special rules are really neat, too, especially his sword and the armor. However he comes in at a very hefty 255 points. with a retinue of terminators that can be 500-700 points in one unit. even in 2000 points battles that can be a bit much.
so I guess most folks don't like to spent the points.
It depends largely on your style of play, though. if you want to through many bodies at your opponent, Abaddon certainly won't be for you. If you prefer a smaller amount of models, but these being elite/well equipped and harder to kill, I guess Abaddon would be an option.
I am afraid that got longer than I planned, does that answer your question?
Shut up and play.
abbadon is defiently usless i think because yah he has the sword but he has low strength value and he cant hurt the bigger things there commin out with like the night bringer and the deceiver... so in a 2k point army hes usless because u can make a daemon prince lower cost and better that can kill one the c'tan.. not likely but possible lol but thats my opinion....
The fact is, if your playing Necrons, you shouldn't be going out to kill the C'tans anyway...you should be taking out the things that class as Necrons so that they phase out. Anyway, ontopic, I dont know many people who actually use special characters because you can make better Lords etc, for less points.
I can't exactly make a call on whether he is useful or useless, and I think that nobody can really make that claim for you without knowing what else you have in your army what battles you will field him in and what strategies you generally use. Questions such as those are too complicated and have too many fine layers to them to be posted on a forum.
I will also add that usually you are the only one that can really decide what is good for your army or not.
If you read the rules for Drach'nyen, he actually has one of the best chances of killing a C'tan of any lord. His Lightning claw also minimizes the effect of his low strength and his re-rolls make up for his mediocre attacks and if you actually bought a Word Bearers Lord and gave his all the abilities listed (including Marks, Demagogue, and an Accursed Crozius for the save) he comes out at 243points WITHOUT Drach'nyen. That means you get the mother of all Daemon Weapons for less than a Power weapon. Also as an independant character he can't be targeted like the larger and often less powerful Daemon Princes which rule he does not posess in the event he is fighting Daemon Hunters.abbadon is defiently usless i think because yah he has the sword but he has low strength value and he cant hurt the bigger things there commin out with like the night bringer and the deceiver... so in a 2k point army hes usless because u can make a daemon prince lower cost and better that can kill one the c'tan.. not likely but possible lol but thats my opinion....
Its a matter of opinion and how he fits in with the army. As far as points/benefit ratio Abbadon is a tank, he is very good for the points you pay for him. Now, does that mean he works well with your army? that's another question. Since there isn't a "one design fits all" build for chaos lords(there are some designs that work with more lists in general for overall usefulness) but useful/useless question really only can be answered with how it works within the army that he is being fielded with.Originally Posted by The vampire Lestat
You can have the most awesome lord design that ever existed but if it doesn't work well with your army, its a big waste of points.
W/D/L Eleventy trillion billion/NONE/ NONE - I am STILL rulezor!
WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
I have not played him with a full army, but since I have bought and painted him I want to try it out with my black legion army. I used him at a gladiator event using 5 termiators with him, unlimited points. It was fun, and he kicked some serious back side.
That sword was owning others acting like a force weapon, with out a Phy test. The Eldar on the board hated him because of the thing he has negating psychic powers which is a pretty nice roll. His saves are great, and rerolling on the claw helped a lot, and not able to be insta killed saved him several times.
I think he is a good HQ for taking out other HQ's. Usually you don't want to use your HQ against another one, but he is setup for it.
I could have sworn I posted something on this thread. Anyways, I've used him in a 2000pt game, with a minimum size retinue. Deepstriked him in objective area. They held out pretty well. I don't believe Abaddon is useless. He has his use.
