Where do you all put your chaos icons and do you model them?
I want to have them all on my AC's or special weapons but I worry that somehow this would violate a WYSIWYG rule. GW sells the special icon bearer models but I got the feeling using those could become a self inflicted penalty. As I remove that model I remove the units ability to be summoned off so I wanted to put the icon on a guy I will already be removing last if possible. Can all my AC's carry the icons and not be "personal icons?"
Alternately, could putting the icon on the AC this could be a penalty if my opponent uses Mind War or a Vindicare often. Anyone have problems with this??
Ruthlessness is the mercy of the wise.
On my Death Guard I had modelled/converted the standards on separate 25mm bases. They looked a bit like they were stuck in the ground.
That way I could alsways put them next to the model carrying them. Which pretty much meant that for casualty removal purposes I could just make them float around the unit.
The rules say that you can treat banner bearers like special weapons troopers. if I remember correctly, so technically speaking what I did was ok, I guess.
Modelling wise they were made from plastic rods and chaos spiky bits (from the vehicle accessory sprue), rolled out greenstuff for the banner itself and the odd bits and pieces from various sprues (SM helmets, zombie heads and so on).
Shut up and play.
I've tried them on unit champions and have found this to be a problem at times. With a unit size of say 8 an opponent can score that many wounding hits and assign one, usually to the champion, and as a result I occasionally loose both my hidden pwr fist AND icon which really hurts. Putting them on heavy/special weapons, exept plasma guns, is a good idea and I would recommend doing this if you can. Mine are made from a little bit of brass rod, a beastman/marauder banner. I've found the left bolter hand is a good way to grasp them as a drilled hole in the CC handhas a tendancy to split, especially if your rod is quite thick.
What I did for my icons was to take the pole with heads spiked on it from the CSM command sprue and chaos vehicle sprue and mount them on the backpacks. This keeps the models hands free, looks great, and is easy to do.

Icons are easy to make and get creative about. Anything disturbing or with a Chaos insignia will be fine.
Lamenter's idea is also great, because it means that you can also use the icon as an objective in other missions. Litle things like that are always fun to model.

If you want to make some funky-looking banners use the spray can option on ms paint- this works well for slaanesh (with random bright colours) and nurgle (mingled greens and browns). Toothpicks make for decent banner poles. I have an AC with the retro noise marine power claw, and a toothpick pole with a .bmp banner held in the tentacle from the mutation sprue. I can't paint, but the idea was there.
