I've yet to actually fight Tau, but a friend of mine has been showing me his codex, and I realise...
Man, those railguns are BRUTAL.
He can have up to 8 hammerheads with railguns on the field, and those 10S, 1AP shots with BS of 5 make me realise anything capable of killing that will bite the dust. 72" of brutal fire means Predators, Chaos Demon Princes, Havocs, and Defilers will either be unable to shoot (Or, in the case of the defiler, need a 4-6 roll to glance-pierce) or get mowed down before reaching his firing line.
I'm wracking my brain for strategies, but the Hero Character the Tau have allows up to 8 heavy support choices. I almost cannot believe it.
Is there any strategy I can use against him, that will actually work?
It's highly unlikely, that if he chooses to take that many hammerheads, that he'll be able to hide them all behind cover. That should leave at least some of them out in the open that you should be able to destroy with some of your weaponry, if you get first turn. Also, if he takes all 8 heavy support slots, that's a lot of points, so he won't have much else of an army.He can have up to 8 hammerheads with railguns on the field, and those 10S, 1AP shots with BS of 5 make me realise anything capable of killing that will bite the dust. 72" of brutal fire means Predators, Chaos Demon Princes, Havocs, and Defilers will either be unable to shoot (Or, in the case of the defiler, need a 4-6 roll to glance-pierce) or get mowed down before reaching his firing line.In general, use cover as much as possible, and get into close combat. With anything. Almost all Tau suck at close combat, so anything you can get into clsoe combat is good. Besides, when in close combat, he can't shoot at you - another plus.Is there any strategy I can use against him, that will actually work?
Some ideas on killing those pesky rail gun wielding hammer heads, would be maybe deep striking some obliterators around it. Maybe get a Indirect Fireing Defiler to sit behind cover, so it's safe, but can still launch fire at the Tau.
Use fast units as well. Bikers, Raptors, anything fast is good. Move up using cover, and then eventually assault.
The Bikers can speed boost giving them an invulnerable 3+ save. Very valuable. Even those railguns and other powerful tau weaponry will have trouble taking you down then. If you wanted, you can attack melta guns to the bikers to. Speed them up, take down some heavy infantry/vehicles with those bikers, and then assault some Tau infantry. You could also summon daemons using the bikers very effeciantly. Speed boost forward the first turn, unleash the daemons, let the daemons reak havoc, and then continue on with the bikers.
If you do decide to take daemons, I suggest Daemonettes. They have rending which is very powerful on the charge. Hopefully, you can charge the turn your daemons are summoned onto the field. The reason I suggest Daemonettes, is because Bloodletters, the other main option (IMHO) would be somewhat of overkill on tau. The Tau shouldn't give much of a fight, after the Daemonette charge. Also, when you charge with your Daemonettes, position your squad so that you don't kill the whole enemy tau squad in your turn. Instead, make it so you take out a majority of the tau squad, so during your opponents turn you finish off the squad. That way your not left a sitting duck after you kill his squad, and you can move onto assault the next tau squad safely. This doens't just go for the daemons, but for your whole army.
With Raptors, you could do the same thing, with Melta-Guns or Plasma Pistols. Or, you could equip them with flamers, and go for their infantry rather then vehicles.
You won't be able to outshoot a well planned out, and built Tau army, so I would urge against a shooty chaos approach. However, it's still good to have some shooty elements in your army. A couple Predators with Mutated Hull and/or Parasitic could be even hard for the Tau to take down. Equip the Predator with the right weapons, and your good.
For anti-infantry I suggeswt a autocannon turret, with heavy bolter side sponswers. For anti-tank/heavy infantry, I suggest a twin linked lascannon turret or autocannon turret, and lascannon side sponsers.
Don't be intimidated by all his big weapons
Curse the Tau and that railgun. I am currently in the possession of a small army that my friend fights with tau and he mows me down half the time before i get there. I have no rhinos as of now and even if i did his hammerhead or his heavy crisis suit thingy would make short work of them so they wouldnt get too far. We normally play a 6 turn game but i rather play to the last man so i can actualy get him into CC for once, once my bezerkers touch those ffire warrior bases, i needn't even roll.
Hammerheads aren't that tough to deal with, really. I've never played a Tau who takes 8 hammerheads. It's just too expensive. Get some tankhunting autocannons or lascannons in your line squads, some obliterators. Pack your list with lots of infiltrating wounds and get into combat with his troops.
Against Tau taking 2 HQs is a good idea. Something like:
Dark Blade, CCW
Power Sword CCW/Lightning Claws
They both cost about ~120 points but can do SO much damage against the Tau and let's you devote your troops and heavy support to dealing with his hammerheads and such.
Don't forget this, if you really need it:
Mark of Tzeentch
Bolt of Change
Change his side/rear armor and there you go.

Pardon? Tau are not able to take 8 hammerheads--that would require 3 Force Org Charts. Did you mean Broadside Suits? Tau can take 9 of them but that would be 2/3 of the army and I've never seen that many brought anyway.
Railguns aren't much more dangerous than lascannons. Yes, you won't want to bring any expensive vehicles against Tau, but the strength of Chaos is not in its vehicles anyway. Railguns don't kill Marines any better than plasma rifles do. Your Daemon Prince does face instant-death but remember that Railguns are one of only two ranged weapons in the game that can do it...and you have a daemonic gift to avoid even that if it really worries you. (The other gun is the Vindicator's ordnance weapon.)
As for Hammerheads, notice first that any roll on the glancing hit table will prevent the railgun from shooting (if it's moving fast, of course). Notice also that it has only one main weapon, unlike your Land Raider or 3-las Predator, which makes it vulnerable to Weapon Destroyed. While the strength and AP look impressive, the Railhead is actually balanced...and the Tau are supposed to have good firepower anyway, it's their stock in trade. Emperor knows they can't win a drunken bar brawl to save their little blue lives.

Eldar D-cannon is S10 too.
Broadside railguns can't sbmunition so they run out of targets very quickly.
against tau massed MEQ's is the way to go. If you own some bikes use them.
If you get the opportunity to shoot at the crisis suits take it, odds are you won't get the chance again.
Daemon's do remarkably well against tau. All tau players fear vsing a khorne army.
Defilers can just be indirect and they are safe from railguns. Don't bother with other vehicles.
Just remember that a marine outshoots a fire warrior. Tackle them head on and don't provide targets for the railguns.
-Havocs with autacannons or missile launchers and tank hunters and
-CSM Squad with plasma gun and lascannon
Lt w/ infiltrate, speed, furious charge, BP, Dark blade, D. Strength
lord w/ bike, d.rune, d.armor, furious charge, Dark blade.
-Turbo boost for a 2+ invulnerable save!

Definitely. Against Tau is where Furies really shine. The rest are a bit too slow and Furies are the cheapest of the fast guys.Daemon's do remarkably well against tau. All tau players fear vsing a khorne army.
If I were to make a Tauhunter list, it would be something like:
Tankhunting Autocannons (the BEST choice against skimmers)
Infiltrating Marines with CCW or Heavy Bolters marked to summon.
