What is the proper procedure for summoning and placing daemons? Do you have to select which unit you are summoning first before you roll, and once you do summon the daemons do you still get to roll the scatter if there is not 1" of space between models for the unit with the icon? And lastly, once you start placing them on the template can they go anywhere or is there a specific method? I was told they have to be placed in the center and spiraled outwards but that kind of contradicts what it says at one of the GW websites.
GW Online : Warhammer 40,000 : Chaos Space Marines : Daemons Tactica
If the template lands someplace where there isn't any room for the daemons to come in on, then you lose the unit. This includes friendly models.
Daemons may be placed anywhere on the template so long as there is unit coherency, and there is no reference to the models' bases having to be 100% on the template.
I'm not an avid user of daemons, but if i was playing someone who used them, I would let them play like that, as daemons have enough restrictions as it is.
Just remember, deep strike and summoning are totally different. Don't let anyone bully you into using deepstrike limitations upon Chaos summoning (for example inability to assault or what not).
As a side note, when do daemons get summoned with respect to falling back units? Does your falling back unit fall back then summon daemons, or summon daemons then fall back?
Thats what I thought... I didn't think the Spiral out thing was right. So, does this mean that I have a potential range of 17"? That seems kinda like a lot. the template itself is 5", plus movement and assault.
Consider the template lands 12" behind your squad...
That comment on the GW site always makes me chuckle,
'..and Bloodthirsters hate pretzels.'
However, ff you've binded them with the Chaos Icon , then yes, it's a powerful tool. An instant assault squad who arrive without any chance for the enemy to shoot or attack them.
Ok, hmm...please explain what you mean by..."However, ff you've binded them with the Chaos Icon , then yes, it's a powerful tool..."
I'm looking into the codex, and all I'm seeing is the Personal Icon or icon for the squad, etc. There's no mention of "binding" the daemons to an icon. Is there something I'm missing? Some way to make it so you don't have to roll the 2D6 to scatter the daemons? Also, forgive me for this silly question - but if the squad or IC holds the icon, and the daemons can only be summoned to that icon, when you roll the 2D6 scatter, and it "hits" doesn't that put the daemons right on top of the unit carrying the icon? And doesn't that kill all summoned units?
Wow, I am so utterly confused, and the codex isn't really helping me with its veiled language. I would guess there's a whole ton of threads addressing this, but I can't seem to find these answers.
There is a special icon available to MoCU chosen only. For the price of ... ah! had you there! Seriously though, check the codex under the wargear and chosen entries.
Basically it means the daemons can be summoned any time AFTER turn 1 without rolling and without scattering.
For wordbearers or another daemon using army, this can be a really really powerful tool.
With regards to the second question. The codex states that the template must be put in contact with the icon bearer. Not on top of. So, you can put it on top of him if you really feel like, but it's generally put down in front of him or, wherever you hope the daemons will appear.
Well, damn...I think originally I just didn't like Daemons and therefore ignored that part of the Chosen list. Geez...
Ok, so then you just hope to whichever God is nearest that it doesn't scatter anywhere near your unit...wow that is REALLY dicey and chancy. I find it hard to believe people confidently field so many Daemons when one bad roll of a scatter dice makes your entire 100+ point daemon squad wasted points.
If the template goes even one inch towards the character holding the icon...the whole summon is wasted. I could never hedge a strategy on those chances...much respect for those with that kinda courage.
