Is it just me, or do Chaos armies have a serious lack of good elite units and fast attack units? I was trying to put together a mobile list and I just think that the choices are horrible. Terminators are okay but very expensive. Obliterators are great but I play a cult army... Posessed are just worthless for their point cost. For fast attack, I can use Mounted Daemonettes but those cost 2x as much as a regular Daemonette. I can't use Raptors, and the only option left are Bikes. Bikes are good, don't get me wrong, but they don't have anything on Landspeeders or the like. I am trying to create a more mobile army that can get down the field faster, but with Chaos I seem to be stumped!
Chaos has access to one of the best Elite choices in the 40K Universe - Obliterators. They're simply amazing, and one of the reasons I really dislike playing cult armies.
Fast Attack has Raptors, which while not particularly cost effective, are extremely versatile, mobile, and deadly both in and out of CC. Fast Attack also has Furies, which are my personal favourite Daemonic Unit. They are quite simply amazing for their points.
But you play a cult army. You make sacrifices for that. For the bonus summoning rolls and free Champions, you have to give up on some of the best units. It's a trade off. If you want some of the best things Chaos has to offer, then consider taking a Chaos Power Heavy Black Legion list instead.
I'm guessing you play Emperor's Children? Look at the stats on those sonic weapons. Your troops can move and still shoot at long range. That replaces much of your need for Fast Attack.
It's kind of hard for Chaos to have cost-effective Elites. All our armies have low numbers of high-quality troops, and that's just the basic Marines. Elite Marines have amazing skills & stats but they're still Marines--they're only one wound stuffed in a power armor suit. The typical Chaos army doesn't need its Elites except for specific purposes, and for those they're usually worth the price.

The reason you don't seem to have great elite choices is because you are taking elite units as troops. When you play a cult army that is the sacrifice you make--You lose lots of options to have cheaper (free champions) and more powerful (have to be marked) troops choices. The more I think about it the less reason anyone should ever have to play a cult army...You are saving 15 points per squad to take obliterators, raptors, and furries out of your list. It just doesn't make much sense to me.
Yeah you are right, I think i'm going to be switching to an aligned army at some point in time. For some reason I'm not too impressed with Obliterators. They can move and shoot 1 weapon and then still get instant killed. They seem to be more anti-tank then anything and I can get that elswhere. On an aside, what is so great about a CSM on a bike? They can't move and shoot except with rapid fire weapons so I must be missing something.
And on a totally unrelated topic, what do most tournament level armies consist of? I like Slaanesh but I see a lot more Plague Marines and Word Bearers than EC. I always thought EC were the best, but there has to be some reason why the others are so popular.
If you wan't to get down the field faster infiltrate your units! Plus if you use daemons they can assault the turn they come in. The reason you don't see EC that much is because of their scacred number. Its either too small (6) or too big (12).

Aside from having 9 troop slots, I really don't see what's so good about the Word Bearers..? Just a lot of Daemon-bombing?
EC are a lot of fun, especially their Independent Chars Fuelled By Pain is probably my favorite skill, even though Siren is "better", the fluffiness of FBP makes me smile.
Terminators-ok, no better or worse than loyalist termies (maybe slightly worse due to lack of assault cannon).
Chosen-Not that great, yet for some reason they are the basis of my chaos army.
Obliterators-Own every race except eldar (my friend got a nasty shock when his pair of oblitz met my pair of falcons).
Possessed-whats wrong with them? with something like visage and a rhino, or talons and MoK they can do huge amounts of damage. They don't cost that much either, only 4 more than a berserker and much stronger.
Other marked Troops-Can be handy if you want some Tzeentch models to help out or some berserkers to give a shooty army some cc ability.
Bikers-No better or worse than other races bikers, I personally say better since they can summon and get an extra attack.
Daemonic beasts-Great. Flesh Hounds are a bit expensive but Furies can help out bikers giving you a surprise early cc to help you out. GW wrote a great tactica on screamers, using Thousand Sons to tie the enemy down in cc then screamers to repeatedly charge them. very effective against large squads like necrons, nids and orks.
Raptors-I think these were meant to be a counterpart to oblitz. Nowhere near as good but nevertheless compare them pointswise to assault marines and they are worth it.
I don't see how chaos is lacking? everything listed here holds its own against other races.

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
All very true...and yet my armies still seem to lack the fast attack...I never really thought of it that way, but when I look at what I have taken - It's mostly Troops and Heavy Support + Oblitz. (And my Oblitz smash my Eldar friend's Falcon without much grief...it's the Vypers I worry about!! CTM > HF)
Furies are pretty nice for a fairly cheap, fast unit. But yeah - the only thing Chaos is missing is a Sniper Rifle. Give me a sniper, and I would never complain again. Even if it had to be an IC Sniper.
