Recently i've been playing against alot of pie plate throwers, defilers, lemun russ, looted orc demolishes etc and I've come to the conclusion that these things are not really worth 'wasting' my fire on in an attempt to destroy them. My list is posted so you can see my anti-tank weapons. Yes, i do get very concerned about the damage that they can do, and I do shoot at them if i cant find something else that irritates me, but they just seem to miss alot, or if they do hit, usually about 3 models, i've got some form of cover to hide in so at least I claim a 4+ cover save. I was wondering about others experience with pie plates throwers, are they really that deadly, or do you just concentrate on annihilating everything else. Oh and no, i've not faced a 4 defiler iron warriors list, dont particularly like the prospect either.
I think they are dangerous but not worth focusing your entire army on to kill. The biggest problem is that most of the large blast weapons are AP3. Personally, I think that if they only have 1 tank like a Leman Russ, or even two, they are easy enough to outmaneuver without exposing yourself too much. It all really depends on how many your opponent fields... if its just one, I wouldn't worry since they can't move very far. Terrain placement is your best friend in these types of games.
On a side note, I wouldn't worry about the Barbed Strangler that Tyranids have since you'll get saving throws. Multiple defilers with indirect fire, however, should not be taken lightly. I normally field one defiler in a 750 list and it greatly effects how my MEQ opponents place their troops. Keep this in mind and if you are on the opposite side, perhaps use it to your advantage.
