Well, I'm still deciding on what army to play... I've gone through pretty much the whole codex except for Tzeentch, and now I am up to IW. I fielded a 750 army last night against a DA army and did moderately well, and then got killed by a Tyranid MC list... but it was still fun to play. However, the one thing I hated about playing them is the lack of daemons. I've been playing primarily shooty army to stay competative against my DA and Tyranid opponent, and while its not really that much fun its better than getting destroyed every game.
Now, last night was also my first time using obliterators or a tank... and I am pretty sure I did both wrong. I had no cover to hide the oblits in, and my Vindicator with mutated hull got taken out pretty early in both games. Part of that might have been the fact that it was the only tank I had on the board, so I think that was a big problem and made it a huge target. I only got off one shot a game with the demolisher and it scattered away both times. I also had problems setting it up in the beginning of the game since I wasn't sure what to do with the thing and so ended up blocking my own line of sight. With the obliterators, they were just expensive walking lascannons for most of the game, and I was always afraid of them being instagibbed by my opponents lascannons. They are a fun model to use, but for the point cost I would expect them to have a steady T5.
So, while I do love daemons and want to use them I still had a fun time playing IW, although I did kind of feel like a vanilla SM player. I'm curious if the bonus tanks and oblits is worth sacrificing so many fun and useful units... how do you other players feel about it? Also, can anyone offer any strategies for playing IW? I already read through the tactica, but I guess i'm still confused on proper setup of your army initially with the darn tanks and oblits.
Vindicators, I think are awesome, but look at your army strategy closely. They are a great defensive unit, or a great offensive unit. But a mediocre stand and shoot unit.
For offensive purposes, you rumble forward as fast as you can with as many threats along right behind it, and you thump them if the vindi survives.
For defensive, you sit it behind cover until your oponent's forces gets close move 6'' and thump!
And, I would have chosen daemonic posession over mutated hull for the vindi.
Ignoring all stunned and shaken is huge at low point games. Did it just outright get blown up? or did it get stunned first so you couldn't get it out of the way of danger of hit back?
Obliterators, are AWESOME, they are really what make the IW exceptionally hard.
Set them up just behind cover so they can be targetted by lascannon fire first turn, and start walking up and shooting every turn. The only tough part of them is in certain situations, which weapons to fire with.
And, its never a bad idea, if you see lascannons, to walk them into areas where you don't get shot by them, but you can shoot something of theirs, even if its just troops.
Hope this helps.

WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
Ecchu, this is a bit superficial but:
what can't Iron warriors use?
Daemonettes, Plague marines
What can Iron warriors use?
They have access to the rest of the chaos codex no problems. And they have access to a bit more. No ones saying you can't run an iron warriors army with assaulty elements in it. tHe fluff in the codex even states that the final assaults are almost always bloody.
No problemo - play what you want to and experiment too
I see what you are saying Karmoon, but one of the reasons I chose to play Chaos initially was because of all the cool daemons you can use. True, most of them are highly specialized and most I would never use... but playing Slaanesh I am quite attached to my Daemonettes.
I do think that IW are one of the more powerful and versatile Chaos armies though, which is why I have chosen to give them a try. They seem to do well in a variety of situations. I look forward to playing them some more and figuring things out.
Other than not using mark specific units, pretty much all gravy with IWs, you can use pretty much everything AND get a extra heavy at the cost of restricted Fast Attack (who cares). Take a maxed squad of Raptors, set them up for CC (you probably already have enough shooty. Take skills such as Infiltrate and Furious Charge, the Champ with LClaws, D.Str, and D.Mut, he be hitting on 4s and wounding on 2+ on the charge, with 5 attacks, ignore saves. Okay that went a little to long. But my point is, IW cult is the best when it come to units. Yes Night Lords get more fast attacks, but they have really expensive list IMHO, and risky list especially since jump pack peeps have to roll difficult terrain and get screwed. I wish I went IW because they hold alot of benefits over other cults because Chaos depends heavily on Heavy support and rarely Fast Attack. I wish I had a extra Havoc squad sometimes.
I know it's not 100% the same, but you do realise that daemon princes and possessed are also fair game for an Iron warriors player.
Daemon princes CAN be configured to be more scary than a greater daemon
Possessed can be more effective that daemons (apart from delivery).
It's not the same, but because they're so fluffy I'd give maximum kudos to someone who uses possessed. Also the modelling opportunities are fantastic. No more red beast men or naked girls for you. You could conjure something up that looked like it came from John carpenter's The Thing
Otherwise play black legion every so often for a laugh as Lictorinthegrass said.
