So uhm, how many obliterators are too many? I bought 7 of them and I'm thinking of returning a few... do I really need that many for IW lists?
In 2000 points, I wouldn't use more than 6, in 3 squads of 2. They are fantastic units, but they are not cheap. More than that and you're going to have too many points invested in too few models. Even with 6, it's going to be 420 points, over 20% of the army in 6 models.
Even less if you're going to have lower point games.
10... for obvious reasons.
I guess it depends on the points of the game, In my opinion you should use 2 below 1000 points, 4 below 1500, and (As mentioned) 6 below 2000. After this its really up to you to decide whether you NEED more.

Given that IW isn't limited in it's Obliterator use. How many Elite choices in your Force Organisation Chart are you willing to spend? Do you plan on including Chosen in your army? Or Possessed marines? Those limit the 3 optional Elite choices too.
But like Moob said, it's a huge points sink having 6 models for 20% of pts cost your list in 2000 pts list. It's almost a 3rd in 1500 and almost half in 1000.
I think I'd go with 4. 2 squads of 2. @ 280 pts. it's about a 4th of your list for 4 models in a 1000 pts. list and it leaves some space for another Elite choice. If you see fit you can always opt for another squad of 2. Squads of 3 are at most overkill, unless you're playing against a lot of infantry, where H. Bolters would come in handy. Thus giving you 3 x 3 bolter shots, if you've got 3 Oblit's in the squad.
I could ramble on for quite some time I guess, perhaps anyone else can give you some more advice. I'm just saying 7 is, in my opinion to much.
I'd just hang on to them all. If you ever really need to cheese out, you're only 2 more away from taking a full 9 Obliterators.
i myself like to cheese out when i play an IW list (keep in mind thats only for fun, and use 100% proxys) but i can still make a list.
its true you use alot of points on them, but if you play IG, Eldar, or Tau (even nidz) to get rid of ANYTHING big, and once the tanx, skimmers, and fexs are dead, move on to medium targets, wraith guard, battle suits, or warriors. use plasma or something if you wish. but having 9 mobile cannons REALLY helps.
And that's only because I really don't find the elite choices for Chaos to be too exciting other than oblits, so I don't mind sacrificing the last elite slot to do it. Possessed are way too expensive when given the good toys, and don't really fit in IW anyway. And I'm not really fond of Chosen, either.
