hmm need help on advice for tau fighting my friends getting tau im doing chaos and i wanted some tips on fighting the tau
The key to fighting Tau is getting them into close combat. With their silly JSJ you want to place your units close enough such that any move they make will not fully protect them. If you don't know what you are up against, I would suggest Alpha Legion with all infiltrate. You can take infiltrating Autocannon havocs in case they have skimmers, and also infiltrate a speed lord to mow down the lowly fire warrios. They fold really easily in CC. Barring that, if you aren't an Alpha legion player and are Iron Warriors like me... load up on pie plates!
This is just very general information though, and if you could provide some info on what type of Tau he plays and what type of Chaos you play, I am sure everyone here could offer some better advice.
well the peices ill have are berserkers ,3 bikes, some chaos marines, rhino, abaddon, land raider, and terminators my field has alot of woods to help me get close so that cud help
While CC is the most obvious way to kill Tau, it's not the only consideration. I've seen a lot of players just full on charge Tau armies, which doesn't tend to work as well as you'd think. Intelligent close combat will serve you better than just close combat.
1. Stealthsuits are hard to deal with, but are very expensive, only come with BS3 as standard and lack anti-MeQ weaponry. If your opponent has invested in making them BS4, you're looking at a unit which could easily hit 150 points for 1 dead marine on average per turn. Bear in mind that any annoyance they are causing you is costing your opponent through the nose, and don't be afraid to lose some models to them.
2. Target markerlight units first.. This means things like pathfinders and the skyray gunship. Don't ignore the skyray once it's fired off all its missiles either.. It can still provide nasty buffs to other units.. Fire warriors are only BS3, and, despite the fearsome reputation pulse rifles have, will be pretty ineffective against marines unless they can score a lot of hits. Killing markerlight units will deny those hits.
3. Again, battlesuits suffer from the same problems as stealthsuits.. They are either very expensive, or suffer from a mediocre BS. Therefore, either they will be depending on markerlights, hence tactic 2, or they will be so expensive you can afford to devote a lot of firepower to killing them. Lascannons and Krak Missiles are effective.
4. Like all skimmers, number of hits is more important than uber high strength when firing at Tau vehicles. If you have lascannons, they're possibly better off firing at suits, where they can instant kill expensive models, rather than wasting time getting glancing hits on vehicles.
well mantis really did sum it up, i just thought i'd add a little more on how expensive some tau things are. This is comming from a tau player, i play MEQ Tau and chaos. Forgive me tau brethren ^_^
Mantis hit the nail on the head about stealths, they only hit 50% of the time w/ their shots, and to upgrade it any really stacks the points on. If you see a stealth team firing at more than bs3 go after it. One turn of CC should do them in if you are marines
Crisis suits are amazingly fragile, one missile launcher, or lascannon and they are done for.. if you can force them into the open somehow i recomend that, otherwise again close combat will work. Just beware that crisis suits, like all tau, are meant for shooting, and they pack a punch. The basic fireknife will cut down marines when shooting, and they have movement on you, 12" total a turn is somethin u cant keep up with normally. Thats why force them into the open or into a corner where they cant run anymore and just assault them, fyi - the basic fireknife suit that i see alot of and that i feild are 77pts a peice.
Markerlights own and do a variety of things, trust me you dont want fire warrior squads hitting you on 2+... which isnt hard to accomplish if you have a pathfinder squad. Pathfinder teams get expensive quick so they are prime targets.
now lastly lets talk about where the tau excell, heavy support. The hammerhead tank is incredibly versitile and cheap for what it can do. I recently played a game against an eldar player, it scored me over half my points by pie plating small units of aspect warriors, and solid shoting the armor that i forced into the open. You dont have to worry much about the railgun as a troop killer as much as a tank killer... i recomend not leaving armor in the open against it, i've seen the thing take down practically every vehicle in the game on a reliable basis. As a troop killer, worry about the ion cannon, three shots and generally two dead marines a turn from the squad, not bad for a 120pt tank that moves 12" and shoots. Skyrays are amazing and i hate to repeat this but dont leave them alone when they are out of missiles just like mantis said, the markerlights are still there and are just as usefull as the missiles.
well thats my advise that i can give, i cant really comment on anything else, because its all too slow for my style and i dont feild. Hope i helped and good luck. LET THE GALEXY BURN
well thanks for all the help thisll be good knowledge to kick his arse with and luckily atleast for out first battle he will not have a sky ray but will have hammerhead hes buying the 175 dollar box set thing for his army
also would like to ask about abbadon ive heard he can take tanks do you think he could smash battlesuits or a hammerhead just wondering
Heh, well I watched my younger brother fight Abbadon with his Tau.
Abbadon ended up being 255pts worth of "I-attract-****loads-of-plasma". So I would guess that like most special characters, he's completely over rated.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
well correct me if i'm wrong but abadon can only make a single attack w/ his sweet ars sword. and given that look in the 40k rulebook about skimmers which the hammerhead happens to be, you will be hitting the skimmer on a 6... so 1/6 times he will hit the tank. I personally dont think that at over 200pts he would just get loads of shots thrown at him, probably at ap2 or 1 and force u to take the 50/50 chance on his invuln save. That wont save him for long.
Personally I wouldn't use him against Tau as he's overkill for anything they have (yes even there special character Commander Farsight)
Use him to clean up CC (I know it sounds weird against Tau). If they try and mob a squad, or if you have problems with their character, you shouldn't. just send in abaddon, he'll make it right
