Here's my deal.
I'm planning a 1000 pt Alpha Legion army.
I've got most of it fleshed out but I'm up in the air between rounding the army up with demonettes or with raptors.
Tactically, this army, like most AL forces, is infiltrate infiltrate infiltrate.
Demonettes=affordable, yet fragile to enemy fire, dependent on the cultists who summon them.
Raptors=pricey, slightly less fragile, not nearly as good at CC but can also shoot, can infiltrate no?
my army is a friendly one, designed mainly to fight SM and Tau.
Raptors are usually reserved for games over 1850 points. They are fairly difficulty to use, meaning that they aren't very forgiving and require very precise timing. Experiment w/ them in a few casual games; without a doubt, raptors are very fun. Most players try and kill them as quickly as possible, as you might have guessed.
Spambot kill tally. . .337
In a 1000 points army the raptors might be a bit too pricey. I would only use them at 1500 poitns and above.
and what do you mean by "friendly"? as in not for tournaments? or as in, we'll kill you but we'll make it quick? :w00t:
Shut up and play.
Friendly as in . . . This army only plays my sister and or good friend.
So I'm reading that raptors are too expensive to be worth it in small games?
Raptors rock! They indeed attract loads of firepower and for good reason. They can rip the heart out of any unit, just to force-feed to them. The best way to use them is to let them fly from cover to cover and sneak up on units that tend to be lonely (Devastators, Havocs and other types fire support units). The fact that the have Daemonic Visage (-2 LD) AND Hit-and-Run makes them gruesome! Make them run because their morale is heavily lowered or you remain in the fight and can Hit-and-Run at the end of enemy-turn. You can unload on them and charge them again (charge-bonus!!). If you use them (1300 pt. army) give them furious charge!
Adding on to Boydgarret's statement, Alpha Legion may have Daemon Packs, but they must be summoned by cultists.
Most everything has been sufficiently covered, I just have a few more things to add.
The reason that raptors are generally reserved for higher points games (1850 and up) is that they are pricy and fragile, on top of that, to make them worth while you need 7 at the least, now put in a mark and furious charge(almost mandatory for survival) you're staring down the barrel of a very pricey per model unit. Oponents recognize this and gun for them early, both because they know that they are a really juicy target, and that if they leave them be, they can be a real thorn in thier side. At the higher points games, they can be brushed off is an "acceptable loss" if you need to, its much harder to swallow that if you just dumped 20 or so % of your force in them.
W/D/L Eleventy trillion billion/NONE/ NONE - I am STILL rulezor!
WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
So.. what about a 5 man team with 3 melta guns?
with infiltrate that's 180 points.
Is that really that bad for an anti tank squad? With the infiltrate AND 3 meltas.. can this not be usefull even in smaller games?
an infiltrated 6 man squad with two meltas and tank hunters costs 128 points.
Just for comparison.
Or.. are their krak grenades good enough for anti tank?

Er, you miscounted somewhere. 6 Raptors with 3 Meltas, Tankhunters, and Infiltrate is 240 points. That's about the same as an 8 man infiltrating plague marine squad with aspiring champion and 2 special weapons. You want to guess which one I think is more valuable? With easy access to tankhunting lascannons and deep-striking obliterators there's more efficient ways of dealing with armor. For the price of that one six man squad you can get two tankhunting lascannon squads, for instance. Or 3 Obliterators.
I think Raptors is just another overpriced unit in our Codex. You can get much better for less
edit- Sorry, I thought you were talking about the Raptors cost, not normal marines.
