Im considering going with an Dread in my IW army. I love the model and the idea of having one because ive never seen one fielded in an IW army and i think it would be somewhat different. Would having one workout and what would the best loadout be ? Also what would the job of an IW dread be as well ? counter assault ? all out shooting? or pure assault ?
I would be considering it in either 1500 or 1850 pt lists.
I realize that the dread isnt the best use of the heavy slot. But i would like to try and make one work.
any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hey there Zed,
there's a lot of anti dreadnought rhetoric on LO. The genereal consesus is that you can get a predator for the same points who puts out more fire power.
Personally I love dreads. They add a lot of character to the game, and are usefull against anything. In CC, they're definitely one of the most oppresive forces around and when they blood rage.. well, 6 attacks at that strength isn't pretty.
The dreadnought can easily play all the roles you suggest, so rather than build your army around the dreadnought i would build your army up including the dreadnought.
Obviously, there's no such thing as a best load out as it depends a lot on what his job is. The only upgrade i'd really recommend is daemonic possession.
The thing to remember with dreads is that you have to keep them in the thick of it - it's where he'll die, but it's where he'll do best too.
I believe there's a dread tacita in the stickies above too.
The general opinion is no. I say go for it.
When you're looking at your army don't think "will this work". Always think "How can I make this work". Unless you are a world champion tournament player (are you?) then anything in the game can work.
For a dread an autocannon is good if you want to keep it cheaper. Plasma cannons are probably the best weapon for it and lascannon if you are short on anti-tank (being IW I doubt it).
Mutated hull is also a good upgrade. Try a dread in a few games and see how often it gets shot and how often it helps. I agree with Karmoon that daemonic possession is great for them.
If you use one though it really should be backed up by other vehicles (preferably a pred, vindicator or land raider) to attract anti-tank shots. Again being Iron Warriors you should be using other tanks anyway.

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
Plasma cannons are pretty cool, plus it's the only place that we can get them.
I really like twin linked autocannons on dreads. It keeps them cheap and when they fire frenzy it's always a laugh, as they pump out a lot of shots.
Has anyone ever tried the multi melta? Heck, do people even realise we can take a multimelta on our dreads?
Certainly, dreads can work in an IW army. Especially since in an IW army you can take so many oblits to really take up the slack for anti-armor.
I'm not a big fan of them, but they can work and they can be fun in their own right.
W/D/L Eleventy trillion billion/NONE/ NONE - I am STILL rulezor!
WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
In city-fights especially, dreads come in handy.
Mutated Hull: If you're playing against Eldar of any kind, you want to avoid this upgrade. The bright lances will reduce your armor to a 12, which renders this upgrade useless. Even on dreads, I prefer Daemonic Possessoin, which seem (IMO) to grant the dread more overall staying power.

Down at my local shop there is a Iron warrior player. He is VERY sucessful with his army. In his army he uses a dreadnaught with a defiler,a nd a looted basilisk and it is a fearsome sight (also all 3 are wonderfully converted). But to answer your question. Yes a dreadnaught can be used in an IW army to great sucess.
I reject your reality and substitute me own!
I used an IW army for just over 12 months, playing mainly at the tourney level. Throughout the year I used two dreads they started as both being close combat dreads although I found the fire frenzy was a little annoying (due to range i would rapid fire into myself more time than not) so i opted for a little more firepower and put lascannons on them. This option seems to have worked well with the rest of my army and that brings me to the next point, it will depend on what else you have in your army as to whether a dread will be worth it.
In my army the dreads worked well and were able to work well with my other units, good luck with yours.
Army most recently finished (well kinda): Space Wolves
Last Project completed: Converted Aegis Defence Lascannon
Next Project: Long Fang Diaorama
Technically you could take 4 low cost dreads as your heavies and probably do pretty well. Reason i'm saying this is 4 low cost dreads with lascannons backed by 9 obliterators has quite the amount of mobile fire power especially considering your probably going to fire frenzy someone each turn. I have moved away from my Defilers when i play IW as i find Havocs more useful. However i've still considered going back and using the dreads for fun.
