I've been looking through the 'minor' sects of Chaos lately, and one faction that caught my eye was the Alpha Legion. I like the whole 'infiltrate your cultist and mob the enemy' thing, but how does one come to aquire a cultist unit? Buying from ForgeWorld is just too expensive for an army. Any suggestions on converting IG?
Hmm.. i might write an FAQ or article on this...
Basically. there's lots you can do.. what you can't do is limited purely by your imagination.
Personally, it's a mix of:
Cadian, Catachan, Zombie, mutation and Space Marine Scouts sprues.
It all depends on your vision of cultists really. Do you want the organised disciplined ones? Or do you want those which are barely recogniseable as human?
Here are some pics to hopefully inspire you:
Cult champion. Scout part and zombie head. Mutated arm is mutation sprue, tyranid parts, beast man parts.
Another cultist. Notice the Chaos Space marine power sword looks like a normal arm on the body without the massive shoulder pad.
Some freakazoid weaponry - a mix of lasgun and devourer
An old man with a powerfist and a walking stick.
Just be creative
P.s. On this forum, Alpha Legion certainly isn't a 'minor' sect :-D

Well, the main problem I'm having is that the cultist can only be arm with a las/auto-pistol and a CC weapon... Pg 40 of the Chaos Space Marine codex... As for the type of cultist, I'm not really picky. As long as they're in theme with each other and/or blatantly disgrace the emperor, I'm good. The problem is getting the pistols for them, really... The whole 'has to be represented on the model' thing is getting to me. Can't use lasguns, 'cause my opponents are picky about the rules...
Nice conversions, by the way.
My favourite Cultists are shown in FireBase Issue 1, which is hosted on WarSeer (please don't shoot me). It's in the Necromunda section.
For them, you need High Elf Archers, Wood Elves and Guardsmen. They are fairly expensive as they use lots of different parts, but they look great!
For the laspistol, I would buy them here: http://conversionbits.com/product/4IGCAD10
It includes 4 pistol arms from Guard Seargents and 4 chainswords for <$2, and shipping worldwide is fairly cheap.

A good way to build cultists is to buy used IG or other similar models and modify them. If you need to give them laspistols, ask around you, most imperial guard players don't equip pistol to their models, so they have a lots of those waiting for you (usualy, 2-4 per 20 mens box).
