Well, my friend recently purchased some Orks to play in the upcoming combat patrol tournament and his list completely destroyed me. I thought Orks were relatively weak, but it was not even a competitive game. Granted, I was playing AL with 16 CSM - 3 plasma and 3 HB, with a speed lord - and of course the speed lord infiltrate combo is not something you use on Orks so its pretty much a wasted 100 points.
Regardless, it wasn't even close. I couldn't pump out enough firepower to kill 1/2 his army by the time it reached me. Perhaps my list wasn't the best for going against orks, but I really don't like tailoring my lists to someone elses. Am i too pessimistic, or is this problem just going to get worse as he gets more and more of his army? Playing IW with a low model count, I just can't see myself winning against a horde ork army... not even pie plates would be enough from keeping him from reaching my lines. Seriously, these stupid orks were almost as bad as genestealers!
I've never had such a bad time playing combat patrols before! His list included 21 shoota boyz with 3 rokkits, 10 gretchins with slaver, wartrukk with rokkit and 7 shoota boyz with 1 rokkit, and a killer kan with rokkit. Even at such a low BS, 6 rokkits a turn were pretty nasty especially since they are assault!
So like, what am i supposed to do to kill some orks? I want to avoid having tailored lists but getting killed outright is just not fun. I basically just sat there shooting at him as he advanced, and didn't even kill enough to dent his assault.
I never thought I would need help defeating Orks... maybe they aren't as weak as people say they are, or maybe I am just doing something horribly wrong? Gahh so frustrating! I hate combat patrols...
Well against orks your number one weapon of choise would be the heavy bolter. A heavy bolter has a good chance of knocking out his kan and his truck as well as the fact it tears into boys like nothing else. A havok squad with 4 heavy bolters should tear him a new one. Orks also have a tough time dealing with loads of tanks. Granted the have crappy anti tank....but they loads of it, they still arent as effecient in dealing with av14 and av13 vehicles as most armies. Introduce alot of dakka into your army and you should be able to rip him up. Target priority is also a big issue. I suggest you focus on first the truck...kill it and take his mobilty. Then you need to soften up the shoota boy squad with as much fire as possible. Once you have cut that those buggers down to size try and take out the rest of the truck unit. The odd plasma shot should have no problem dealing with the kan as the rest of your army lights up the boyz. At that point in time he shouldnt have enough boyz to deal with you in assault...the gretchin should just be ignored they cant touch anything in assault. I would definatly chuck that prince and get a havok heavy bolter squad. Juat my .02cents.
Joe Peshi (lone wolf) kill tally:Lash Sorcerer, Ghazkull, Yriel, Termi Libby, Vulkan.
Without tailoring a list to specifficaly beat orks consider taking autocannon havoc squads and 6 man CSM squads with 2 Plasma rifles. Switch your lord to a Lt. with Kai Gun and D.Flight. Cultists might not hurt either.

Cultists like zealots for WH work great against the green skins, they can tie up huge mobs, they will eventually die, by that time they are either to far to cause any more trouble or standing in the open with stupid looks on their faces waiting for the chemically propelled projectiles to arrive (happen to be a fan of them so my opinion may be a touch biased).
Failing that go for a higher standard marine count and make some rapid fire bolter mess, not that i discount the abilities of a mighty Chaos Lord, but in the end it sounds like numbers to me and his boys don't get saves against your bolters
Yeah his boyz don't get saves, but when he has those stupid grots in line he at least gets the Living Shield special ability. I was really hoping my AL list would do well against a wide variety of opponents... I posted it in the Army List section but have not received any replies. If I plan on using one list for CP I am not sure how to make a solid one. Chaos does not seem to have any nice cheap units that can deal damage and take a beating like Landspeeders, Killer Kans, Sentinels, etc.
I was really using my speed infiltrating Lt. to deal with the Dark Eldar and Tau JSJ players I saw at the last tournament... ugh!
What about obliterators?

But, at such a high cost for one model, they also increase the likelyhood that your other troops might be overwhelmed. I think you'd almost be safer with more massed firepower rather than a single model with lots of guns.
I recently fought orks. It was a weird experience, but it all boils down to distancing really. With regards to shooting, they're going to to be getting casualties with rokkits. You have to just grin and bear that.
The important thing I found was denyting them the charge. Orks are insane on the charge, but when marines charge them it definitely hurts them.
Also remember, Combat Patrol is very very bad for Chaos. It's pointless playing. Anything below 1000 points is almost not worth playing with Chaos. Regardless of how you do it, it's just a simply case of damage output.
Also... knowing your enemy is a key factor. If you've never played orks before and you lost, well, there's no shame in that. It's not always about the list, sometimes it's about experience too.

I think you're right Karmoon. At 1000 points Chaos really starts getting good. 750 is doable but for some reason we just don't have any cheap effective units. Not that it matters really, I greatly prefer larger point games. I find that Combat Patrols are generally one dimensional and lack strategy.
With a fast army like DE skimmers or SM landspeeders they can just pop off a few shots, gain a few victory points, and then hide the rest of the game. I think thats lame but thats what victory points do to the game. For armies like Chaos we really have no counter. If we get lucky we can pop off a few shots of a HB, and an AC only kills a speeder 22% of the time.
Something tells me that I should just drop out of this CP thing... Warhammer is supposed to be fun not stressful. On a last note, do you think I should drop my Lt. completely? I figured he would be good against necrons and tau.
