Well, Christmas and new year are at an end, and i now have the begginings of an Iron warriors army. Here is my haul:
1 Iron Warriors warsmith
2 CSM boxed squads
1 Raptor boxed squad
1 chaos preadator
1 CSM with Lascannon
I think i did well. My question to you all is, what is my next step? im thinking perhaps another CSM squad kitted up for CC and in a rhino? Or maybe some Havocs? Maybe a Daemon prince model? or a Defiler or Vindicator? Help me please!
Its a good base to start from.
As far as I can see, there's only a few more thing you can safely buy without thinking:
2 x CSM box
4 x Autocannons or autocannon havocs.
If you don't like the metal model repeated, check out my blog, or PM Rabbit as we've both converted autocannon havocs from various places. I believe Rabbit's are much much better, but I won't believe myself. Not in a public forum like this anyway.
As for what beyond that.. well, there's plenty of options, it largely depends on you.
You could go mega mechanised with another predator or defiler.
You could go obliterator happy and get 3 more oblits.
You get even more infantry, drop the vehicles and play Alpha Legion.
But I'd never encourage anyone to stop playing their legion of choice and start playing Alpha Legion. Not in public anway.
Good luck. Remember, you can alway proxy stuff against mates before buying the actual models. That way you can see if they satisfy you, or if they leave you feeling cold, empty and dirty.

are Autocannons really that good? i mean with their moderate stregnth and the little shots they have, theyre really not suited to anything.
8 x CSM
4 x Autocannon, Tank Hunters, MoCU
I present to you the ultimate tankhunting squad.
They have an excellent rate of fire for a heavy weapon, a decent Strength (especially when coupled with tank hunters) and a fantastic range. They are also cheap.
Apart from the MOnolith, Autocannons are pretty much the ultimate anti armour firing solutioin. Some people like taking missile launchers against AV14, but I'm happy with autocannons.
People complain about their AP, but I think their AP is excellent as it gives pretty much every other army big headaches.
Additionally, the high S of these weapons makes them incredibly good at actually wounding marines - forcing your opponent to make a lot of saves.
WH40K is a game of dice. The more shots you have, the more wounds you'll cause, the more wounds you cause, the more saves you make your opponent rolls. Thus, the more he can fail.
This is why, in a nutshell, autocannons are great - any place, any time.
If you don't believe me, then take a look at the army lists on this forum. You'll see there's a recurring theme in the heavy support department. An ode to an autocannon
My autocannon is great, my autocannon is fantastic
Who would have thought, that it is made out of plastic?
My autcannon havocs are mighty, and can destroy tanks with ease
And if you shoot them enough, even marines at a squeeze
Autocannons are great, full of fun and frolics.
You can take an eldar punk, and shoot him in the... head.
In my list I posted I had 2 sqauds of 8men with Auto Cannons.
1 has Tank hunters and MOCU the other has Tank Hunters and Infiltrate.
Form firing lines and cover both sqauds with each other. Get 4-6 Obliterators as 7/8/9 are best. Iron Warriors realy benefit from a Deamon Prince as he is perfect counter-charge.
Use your oblits to tie them up and accept charges and use the Prince to Break them.
Maybe get more Chaos Space Marines as they are useful in your army.
Always feild the Bassy.
Thats my 50c.
Not that I'm disagreeing with anyone, but let's take a look at the numbers.
Autocannon-with 2 shots scores 4/3 hits, scores 10/9 wounds, with marine armor scores 10/27 wounds, or each autocannon wounds a MEQ 37% of the time
Missile Launcher (Krak)-with 1 shot scores 2/3 hits, scores 5/9 wounds, and there is no armor save, so it wounds 56% of the time.
the missile launcher is very clearly superior against MEQS, but against vehicles effectiveness can vary. Against AV 14, the autocannons are glancing on a 6, a missile launcher is glancing on a 5 and penetrating on a 6, slightly better than the autocannon (2 glancing hits not being as a good as a glancing and a pentrating hit). Againt AV 13 and lower targets, the autocannon (with tank hunters) begins to see an edge. A good question to ask when running them is whether or not you expect to have your havocs shooting at infantry over the course of the game. If the answer is no, I would suggest going with the autocannons. If yes, go with the missile launchers.
If you want all the numbers, just ask Caluin or Onodera.
you mention infantry, but not everyone plays MEQs. Against nids/orks/eldar/dark eldar/tau/imperial guard, I know which one i'd rather take.
Of course. a squad of autocannons and a squad of missile launchers is the best.
But, the rate of fire of autocannons does it's job fine against meqs for me.
The instant kill aspect against oblits/thousand sons/Hqs/battle suits is very appealing though.
Yet another testament that a balanced army should come out tops.
Umm but Terraneaux you must realize that IW never ever strugle against MEQS as you have oblits, tanks and the likes outshooting and generaly surviving more than MEQS do.
Iron Warriors only have problems against hordes or fast opponents and the likes.
You could use frags but Auro Cannons are more versatile from what I have seen and used.
If used correctly with the Oblits they are almost immposible to beat.
For example my IW list has 17 wins and 3 losses. They have won 2 tournies and came 4rth out of 26 peoples at SA regionals.:w00t:
So as far as I can see and have used Auto Cannos are by far better.
Before you buy anything else, id make sure you paint what youve got.
Id suggest getting another 3 oblits for 3 squads of 2. organise the Troops choices so you have good effective squads. I use larger squads with dual plasma, or small squads with lascannons.
The auto cannon havocs that are suggested are very good, they are better than krak missiles at everything but 3+ saves, due to rate of fire.
Hey there. It's all been good advise given and I haven't even posted yet I'm in the middle of sweeping a toruney right now with my IW. From that base of 1k, I think I'm devising a good 1500pt list and a devastating 2k list. Just let me say, I'm glad I haven't dropped a ton on vehicles, I am using less then I thought.
My 1k list (which has stomped 2 SM armies thus far and is going after Necrons this week) can be found in detail in my blog (click below) but here's the basics (everything but LT with MoCU):
LT w/ Bike, PW, teleport homer (for flanking with three oblits... just wrong, or dropping them on objectives)
3x Oblits in 1-1-1 squads
2x 5-man las sniper teams TM
1x 7-man, infltrate, 2x plasma, AC w/ P Fist, rest BPs/CCW (for taking objectives)
1x 7-man Havocs, 4x Autocannons, Tank Hunters (skimmer killers)
1x Bassie, indirect fire
Now, I invision my 1500:
change LT to DP, 157pts (if I don't give him a Servo Arm for fun), Dreadaxe, D Resilance, D Speed, D Stature, Furious Charge, spikey bits, teleport homer, frags
Add Raptors, 7-man, 2x Melta, Infil, AC w/ L Claws, D Mut., D Str about 309 pts.
add 2x Oblits, making 2-2-1
add frags to infl squad above (they don't have them at 1k)
That should take objectives eaisly, still pop tanks on the first/second round like the 1k list, and cause the typical mayhem that IW is good at. I can't wait to finish my DP conversion!
