How often do you use the Characters which are specific for the different books of Chaos? I am reading the Horus Heresy series, and I would really like to start using Lucius the Eternal, but the idea of using him seems like it would not be a good idea, especially because my DP in my opinion, is much better.
The special characters are pretty horrendous really. Overpriced, weak, stupid, smelly, easy victory points for the enemy.
Some are vaguely usefull.. but most are terrible, and don't really complement any kind of army at all, simply because we can create such incredible Lords without hassle.
Additionally, they are very very restrictive to fluff. Normally, they MUST be the Lord choice for the army, meaning that they dictate the mark of the army and they follow their own agendas.
From best to worst:
1. Fabius Bile.
Cheap, very interesting abilities, undivided so plenty of flexibility.
Also, horrendous in any kind of combat
2. Kharne the Betrayer
Cheap. Close combat God. Doesn't count as Lord, so can be fielded pretty much whenevr provided there are bezerkers.
No invulnerable save.
3. Lucius the Eternal
Couldn't be bothered to write pithy comments about these boyos. For the points you pay, as you say, you can get much better.

The way i look at it is the characters cant be as strong as a DP because they themselves are not DP's. Also, the points thing is definitely an issue. When the chaos codex gets an overhaul, i would love to see each of the characters get a boost to make them worth their points. I love the story of Kharn and the way he takes no prisoners, it just provides some enjoyable and fun games. The only reason I dont take him is because of his poor I and lack of an invulnerable save. If his I got a boost and he was granted an invulnerable save (5+ will do lol) for roughly the same amount of points i would take him.
But Karmoon does make a good point, characters are a waste because you can make better characters yourself with the DP rules.
