You can take Undivided troops alongside Thousand Sons, but it wouldn't be a pure Thousand Sons army and therefore, you wouldn't gain the benefits of a pure cult army (free AC's and bonuses on daemon summoning rolls).

Thousand Sons armies can be difficult to design well and as you said yourself, you're new to chaos (I hate the word "newbie" or "noob" or all of it's permutations), it would probably be a good idea to start off with an army partly thousand sons and partly undivided til you get the hang of things and then move into a pure Thousand Sons army in time.
