I'm gonna start a chaos undivided army and was wondering where a good starting point is. Ive heard that the battleforce isnt very good. So what is a good starting point where I could get a combat patrol force from. ie a liutenant and two boxes of CSM?
If your unsure as to which legion you want to use then 2 boxes of CSM and a lieutenant are indeed a good buy.
you need as a minimum 2 units of troops and an hq
so yes, 2 boxes of CSM and a lieutenant is an excellent option. You'll get plasma guns, bits and bobs to make ACs with power fists and some heavy bolters which could be the start of a troop hunting havoc squad.
you also need to think about special troops you want in your army? Although you are black legion you are able to field elites slots of marked troops. A good unit is infiltrating nurgle marines, they can be really hard to shift for non plasma based armies.
also, you need firepower, none better or more versatile in the game than obliterators. They are expensive on the pocket but bang for your money you are unlikely to get more. Havocs with autocannons and tank hunting are also up there in terms of pure versatility.
there are other niche units which can be good, the battle cannon on a defiler is pretty useful for ordinance. Rators can fill a good roll in hit seek and destroying particular units.
so think what sort of army you want and if you have more specific questions then ask and surely someone here will help
welcome to the dark side, hope this helps
As mentioned, you literally cannot go wrong with CSMs. They're easily in the top 5 troop choices in the entire game.
I would go as far as to suggest maybe even three or four boxes.
Other safe buys are: Obliterators. Autocannon Havocs and even Predators.
These are all balanced and well respected units accross the boards.
I personally would first try black legion, and then experimenting with special rules by proxying stuff. That way, you can see in which direction you wish to take your army before you commit financially.
I would strongly recommend posting an army list in the appriopriate section to get some experts to tell you about your list and how it can be improved. Once again, this will help you purchase things more effectively as well as give you some solid foundations to work with.
Just remember.. starting Chaos isn't starting 1 army. It's 1 of a potential 9. So take your time and definitely take a look at the stickies and the like.
Welcome to Chaos. Where all the cool kids hang out.
What is the best legion for beginning players that is not Black Legion?
I'd recommend your own original legion/fallen chapter.
What we mean by black legion is basically, and undivided Lord who has multiple options regarding troops choices (i.e. the whole codex). Not 'Black Legion' as perse.
What I would recommend apart from that depends entirely upon what you like and how you like to game.
The Chaos codex is capable of more or less anything, so it's a simple matter of choosing your poison.
On a personal level, I'd have to recommend the Alpha Legion. They might not sound like much, but they're one of the most tactically rewarding and satisying armies to play
Ok thanks for all the help guys!
Grots would have to be the #1 troop choice. As mentioned, you literally cannot go wrong with CSMs. They're easily in the top 5 troop choices in the entire game.
On a side note find a player who would be willing to "black base" a game with you. Basically use extra bases to represent units which you might be interested in using. If i had done so, i might very well not be playing the thousand sons....
"Drop emergency bulkheads! Activate compression rams! Set internal bracing! Issue brace for impact alert! I repeat, brace for impact!"
Ok ive done abit of looking around and now would like to do a khorne army. Should I still get marines? or get some beserkers instead?
It's very nice there. Great view.
But, i'd still consider getting one or two boxes of normal CSMs too.
This is because, you'll get powerfists (very good) and also, you'll have more modelling and tactical options.
the bezerker models look brilliant when you mix them with standard CSM stuff (i particularly like heavy bolter models running).
Tactically, if you don't want to commit 100% to khorne, then standard CSMs make excellent fire support for your 'zerkers.
My strongest advise still remains to try and build a list and post it. That why, you can buy with maximum efficiency.
