I mentioned a little while ago that a friend of mine wanted to use Fabius Bile as his Alpha Legion commander. Now, he moved away and I never saw his army in action. (Good on paper though)
Currently, another one of my friends has started up another CSM army (he already has WE, IW, and EC) and it was Alpha Legion. This guy usually win 75% of his battles, but he has been destroyed in every fight so far with these guys (0-12 i think).
Has anyone played with this army before, or against them? I can read the codex like anyone else, and come up with neat strategies, but the best plan in peace goes to sh!t once you step off and start the war. His main problem is that his infiltrators get too far ahead from the heavy support and daemons are unreliable. Also, he is trying to use a fluffier amry, and avoid any vehicles.
Although your help will eventually spell my defeat, please throw me any ideas for him to tweak his fledgling army.
Basically, you have to make all your squads self-supporting. Each squad should be able to take on any threat to them. infiltrators should be armed with bolt pistol and close combat weapon, with a coulple other squads to stay back and provide covering fire. I usually take a Dreadnought to absorb fire, and take attention away from what the rest of my squads are doing. I have found that people pay more attention to the huge, armored killing machine running at them than a rhino packed with marines that have more killing potential anyway. If he really doesn't want any vehicles, take a FULL squad of cultists, they can hold attention for a couple of turns so that the real people can do what needs to be done. Fluffy, no?
And to add to that, say if you have havocs blasting away on a hill, always shield them with cultists, they are one of the best unit's in the game for this role.
I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream. That's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight... razor... and surviving.
FINALLY!!! this is the first time in like forever I've seen a topic on Alpha Legion. I've a lot of different list's for AL. what I've found to be effective enough is, 2 squads for Full cultious. 1 or 2 havoc squads with rocket (lascannon to expensive)
and a pimped out Choas lord, then all the rest fill with troops. And make sure all of them have infiltrate. Now, that's cool. You can really scare your opponet. all of my CSM have BP and CCW. The only problem with Alpha Legion, is if you are playing at a RTT and you get a mission with NO infilitrate, and your going up against tau, or guard your dead. AL is to slow without infiltrate. I find to be extremely succesful against assulty armies. Cause I make a wall with culious and let them charge my cultious. My cultious will run, of course or be wiped out. And I always make sure there is a 4'' difference between cultious and my SM. after that they get charged with 20+ marines.
Well, i've been playing against his AL army for the past two weekends, and this is some of his strengths:
A LT with five chosen. All have D. Speed, furious charge, and power weapons, except the LT who has lightning claws. (the reason is that he wants to follow the fluff of the army and have his army continue to fight hard if the boss dies)
two big squads of cultists with melta bombs.
one to two tactical squads with CCW and bolt pistols
havoc squad with tank hunter and autocannons
havoc squad with tank hunter and missile launchers
His tactics are as expected for AL: infiltrate!!! He is getting there.
OK, with alpha legion, there are two possible options... one, the enemy is better in close combat than you. if so, it's completely possible to still infiltrate, but have your squads have bolters and, say, heavy bolters and plasma guns, and as soon as they get close enough to assault you back away with your marines and charge in with the cultists, to give your army a little time to get away to shoot again... the other option is for armies better at shooting than you... then, sometimes you have to be a little unfluffy, maybe some rhinos, maybe a dread to hold up the enemy's forces for a turn or two, then the squads of close combat marines can come up and smack the enemies. Playing alpha legion is good for being tricksy, and you can pull as many mind tricks as you want to, simply for the fun of watching your opponent squirm. warhammer is supposed to be fun, and getting into the role that you, as commander, should perform.
Only problem with that, is that it's really hard to pull anything over on your opponent since everything has to be divulged before the game starts. The more you can get into the game, the more you win the game, without using the unbalanced rules of other armies.
I don't know about you, but unless my opponent asks about a certain model and has a reason to do so, or my model has something that is not WYSIWYG, I don't tell him a damn thing.
"So what's in THAT rhino?" "Umm, you'll find out."
"So what does your lord have for gear?" "What did the five fingers say to the face? . . . SMACK!!!" Wait until my lord does that to your army!!!"
At this moment of time im trying to put together an Alpha Legion army which consists of only cultists and daemons. The cultists will infiltrate and have furious charge and try to get in cc as soon as possible where then they will release the daemons. I am trying to keep this army lowish on points so i dont come up against to many tanks,so maybe around 750 to 1000 points...hehehe that should get me plenty of cultists and daemons, oh and they will be in squads of 20 so they should make it only using smallish city boards. I don't know whether this will work but it should be quite fun
Awwww no I opened my drawer and took out some old warhammer models then tried too put them back in and close the drawer but couldn't, damn the stupid black hole = free OOP models for Brettonia due too not being able too squeeze them back in my drawer >_<
The problem my friend has had with daemons is that they never come out when you want them to. Either the Daemonettes come out in the beginning and they get shot the whole way across the board, or bloodletters don't come out at all. You get the picture. And watch out for an all cultist army, because some armies like the Iron Warriors or IG can reduce the no save cultists to ash before the daemons pop out.
actually donny cultists have an armour save of 6+. Ahaha, the alpha legiona re strong, yes. I just field a daemon prince.
dameonic sature, Damon armour, daemonic flight, daemonic essence, daemonic mutation, strength and resiliance, dreadaxe and mocu.
noa rmour or invunerable..kills nightbringers for brekkie, bring it on abbadon...theres a new leader in town...Hydrus will dominate...
