i keep going to tournements and not having much luck against 'nids. I play LatD but could also play regular CSMs and was wondering what units or tactics work best against nids especially the Big ones.
thanks for any help you can give me.
Guns and distance. Stay away. Even if you have zerkers genestealers still devour them. Punch out his Dakka fexes with some lascannons and take numerous heavy bolters, or any other high rate ap 5 weaponry. But is it a swarm list or a MC list.
40,000- 7,000 Points Chaos Space Marines=18 and 17
40,000- 2,500 Points Tau Empire=1 and 2
With LaTD it's difficult - simply because Tyranid's swarm options are far more effective than yours.
Several Leman Russes and Defilers will give him headaches and should enable you to clear vast amounts of gribbiles (speficically genies) out of the way.
For chaos in general, here are some units against them:
Autocannon havocs. - need no justification/explanation.
Destructor Pattern Predators - with heavy bolters
Nurgle's rot. Plague Swords.
Plague Bearers against the big 'uns
Daemonettes - amazing against carnies and tyrants
Sonic weaponry - great against swarms.
You'll need a good amount of range fire power too. Even predator annihilators are usefull against Nids. you can use them to snipe away at Hive tyrants or Zoanthropes.
Nids are scary and flexible - but Chaos are easily their match.
It's very important to keep your cool when fighting Nids. They are at your lines frighteningly quickly, and when they're there, they make a mess.
It it vital to remember to prioritise targets against Tyranids. It's easy to get bogged down with small victories which the nid player is counting on. Synapse creatures, genies are all good targets to go for. If there's a bunch of gaunts with only one synapse creature around then take the creature out, and the gaunts should kill themselves against marines.
Distancing is also key too. Learn how far each species can advance and charge, learn to gauge how far you can move and rapid fire.
Remember to engage big monster according to their weaknesses too. Shooty carnifexes are remarkably bad in CC, and a champ with a fist can easily beat one.
Then again, a properly geared up CC carnifex must be shot at all costs with.
It's tough, but undoubtedly a fair fight between Chaos and Nids.

slaaneshi bikers with furious charge are awesome against nids
you can charge his stealers
act at same time as them
and use sonic blasters on the way in
same goes for fighting harlequins (which is nothing to do with nids i know)
slaaneshi bikers, never leave home without them
personally i usually have a slaaneshi lt with bike and FC also in the unit or seperate using IC status
if the nid player doesn't realise the threat they can lose a lot of hugely expensive models in CC : ) which is very very funny for a close combat specialist
bikes with sonic blasters, can't say enough good things about them against the nids, hoard clearing or stealer killing, they rock. With Str on your AC / LT you can even take down the bigger ones on the charge (although with only STR6 you struggle against T8 unfortunately)

thanks for your suggestions, and the tyranid list that i have the most trouble with is a balanced list with a lot of gargoyles, 3 small squads of stealers, 2 shooty fexes, a flyrant, some warriors, and maybe a few zoanthropes.
That does indeed sound like a balanced and fair list.
With regards to LaTD , I'm not sure on the best way to proceed.
With regards to CSM - nothing to answer the call but a balanced force back.
Now, it is metagaming a bit.. but some heavy bolter havocs would go down really well in my opinion. They should be able to pose a massive threat against the genies and gargoyles and even the warriors.
Once again, Autocannon havocs or a Dakka Predator (Autocanno/HeavyBolter) will do you good.
Against the Zoanthropes, and flyrant, i'd recommend some kind of long range support. Some las cannon sniper squads - DEFINITELY obliterators, or if you want to do it with style, some plasma havocs.
Then, I think you'll need a a balanced core of Marines to take on any threat. Armed with botlers, two melta guns, and a power fist champion. These guys will have the fire power to deal with little gribblies and on the assault, SHOULD be able to take out a shooty carnifex (just remember DON'T SHOOT THE BOLTERS when assaulting!).
For an HQ - I'd suggest MR. Dandy from the HQ Config tacita.
He can easily kill shooty based Tyrants and also wounded Carnifexes.
How about getting a unit of Chosen with MoCU carrying the special Icon (the one binding daemons)? Then you can let a unit of Flamers pop up early in the game, they will eat a unit of whatever each turn.
You also have access to some quite nice tanks Hellhound, LeManRuss to dish out some serious pain.
You should also use meatshield units ála IG. Let the Nids get close and assault them, then once they have broken/died you get his unit nicely packed up in a place you've chose. THere you can unleash say 2 Winds of Chaos (Champ of Tzeentch+ thralls) and a couple of mutant carried flamers, maybe more.
It's also quite fun to turn the big ones into spawns
A unit of Tzeentchian Rubrics with two Sorcerers (Champ+Lt) both with Bolt of Change and Thralls can be quite bad news for Big Bugs.
Did I mention the Chosen of Ahriman?
To key away is pure evil.
In a funny way of course...
