Playing a game vs orks, speedfreeks from what I understand, next week.
Looking for some advice. I'll be playing my Alpha Legion.
What's your build?

Alpha legion hmm? I got your PM.
I have versed Speed freaks before, and without wanting to sound arrogant, I crushed them.
Tank Hunting Autocannon Havocs.
In a 2K league game I would take 2 squads of these guys - against orks they are guaranteed to make their points back.
Just remember how brutal orks are in CC though. Of course toe to toe, a marine will smash an ork in. But they'll have mobs of lots of boyz and a Nob who is effectively a khornate champion with a powerfist. It's like facing the worst of LaTD.
So, only try to engage in CC on your terms. The first turn is critical against Speedfreaks. When you deploy, don't think about your units, think about HIS units. If you were speed freaks, what you YOU do? Where you YOU move?
Then, you deploy accordingly - his tactics are likely to be charge charge waaaagh - and fair does to him. He's an ork player. Kudos for their purity.
Do not forget that some speedfreaks have scout moves available too, which makes them very swift.
Also remember that speedfreak boys have special rules when the vehicle they are in is destroyed too - do not expect to get casualties in this manner.
So, your first port of call should be to disable all transports or fast units. Then you must mercilessly cut them down with vast torrents of fire power before they hit your lines. Even if only three hit your line, they may not kill many, but if you can't destroy them, then your next shooting phase is totally wasted.
This is one match where flamers may be very useful for you - but you still need to treat them with care.
Overall, orks are incredibly fun to play against. They lend a lot of amusement and joy to the game. Best of luck.
I hear what you saying about ACs, had them with TH in my build. However I only own 4. So at that point I'd do 4xAC and 4xML in two squads and I'll drop my 4 HBs into squads for the extra kick....
Heavy bolters should also be able to smash some of his vehicles if you're lucky too.
Heck.. this might be the ONLY time where tank hunters and heavy bolters might work. Hurting vehicles on 5s or 6s isn't so bad when you have loads of shots.
You can always switch to frag with the missile launchers when you get the inevitable hoard of boyz running towards you. Could be worse.
Just keep your cool, and keep your units able to support eachother. Remember to deploy units and keep them 7" apart. The last thing you need/want is for the orks to enjoy the comfort and safety of CC and then just consolidate into unit after unit.
I had a recent foray against Necrons, and I was losing really badly until my plague marines hit his lines. They just consolidated from squad to squad of necrons crushing them and totally safe from reprisal fire.
I was loving it, but my opponent's moral really hit rock bottom as his gameplan just fell apart.
So, make sure that doesn't happen to you.
Thanks for the help guys. Took a solid victory for the game. Wasn't speedfreeks, just orks in trucks.
Got some very lucky rolls, 1st for terrain, 1st for deployment, 1st for infiltrators, 1st turn! Unreal....
1st turn killed 1 truck (3 dead), 1 lrc battlewagon (7 dead), and popped the big gun on his looted russ…he was left with 2 trucks, 6 bikes, and a whole lot of orks on foot.
Rocket Launchers were excellent! Once I popped the trucks I just keep dropping pie plate after pie plate after pie plate. Great game, and I’m not saying that just because I won. My opponent was a real good player, did very well at Games Day Balitmore, knocked out by the dude who won, the big nidz list….My Alpha Legion earned a lot of respect on Sunday!
It's easy not to see past infiltrate with Alpha Legion. But as I keep on saying, Alpha Legion goes beyond that. The skill is with the use of the basic CSM units and havocs.
Your victory was well deserved and I'm sure you gained a lot from the experience.
Hopefully our hopes and dreams will not have died either... as I have heard a second rumour that Alpha Legion are in fact within the latest imperial armour, and feature tactical squads with up to 4 special weapons.
Plus with the book from Dan Abnett on the horizon, it looks like there's gonna be more than me, Twohats and a bucket load of enthusiasm keeping the Alpha Legion alive at LO.
Ever feel like going off on a rant? That's what this is. I very nearly considered going A.L. In fact, my Black Legion armies closely resemble most typical A.L. players builds, except for my inclusion of plague marines for the spearhead. The main reason I elected against A.L. revolves around the lack of generalized infantry. Actually, this pretty much goes for all non-plague marine oriented chaos armies, that is, most chaos marines are usually geared for either c.c. or ranged (i.e., bolt pistol or bolter). Karmoon gets around this by using his famous 8 man marine squad w/ bolters, 1x plasma gun, 1x heavy bolter & an a.c. kitted with a fist. However, these types of units are still geared for range, albeit, the a.c. makes them moderately well adapted for c.c. as well. Still, the unit isn't nearly as effective for engaging ranged opponents in c.c. For this reason, I use plague marines.
The same can be said for a chaos marine unit geared for c.c., but in reverse; the bolt pistol is not sufficient for dealing with c.c. opponents at range, such as Orks, Nids & Dark Eldar.

I'd just like to point out that this is The Yak's original design for squad, which he taught me and hasn't failed me. For expert players or coinnoisseur players, they wish to try something different however.Karmoon gets around this by using his famous 8 man marine squad w/ bolters, 1x plasma gun, 1x heavy bolter & an a.c. kitted with a fist.
It's a very interesting post Rabbit, and judging from the changes in the new codex, our armies are going to meet in the middle, as I'll almost certainly be doing undivided with nurgle.
Also, consider what's going to happen to basic CSM weaponry. IF this is true, then The Yak's Classic 8 Man squad goes from good to insanely powerful.
Heck.. with krak as well, if you're feeling lucky they can even potentially ruin armour (with the p.fist helping of course).
Looking forward to giving them the IoN if possible too
These changes should deal with all the problems.
Good times ahead by friend.
