Ok I have not seen anything that covers the effective general guidelines for making strong pure grey knight armies ( those whos total points is made up of 90% or more of grey knights / grey knight tanks ) and thought we needed one. This is made up using my ideas as well as over veteran players such as number 6 ( that I have added in with the best of my ability ) and uses only the DH codex.
Note: wargear and special weapons are not your friend for the most part this is important to keep in mind.
So to start we will do HQs.
First choice is the simple an cheap brother-captain with no retinue. He should never go over 145 points and should only really be given a psycannon or sacred incense.
Second we have the IC of doom grandmaster. He should try to stay between 160-200 points with the best options being a psycannon or daemon hammer to go with his NFW and then either scourging, holocaust and / or sacred incense.
Third we have the GKT squad with IC. Again use the above but add in 4-6 GKT to go with him ( look at the elite GKT on how to set them up ). This is the cheapest and most effective way to get a squad of terminators as it saves you from having to buy another brother-captain.
note: inquisitor lords are almost never needed and dont do anything that a normal inquisitor couldnt do.
Alright onto Elites.
First we have the simple IC inquisitor. This is any inquisitor that has a psycannon, and while if you want to give him additional gear you can he doesnt need any as he can hide behind other units however if you feel you must keep him under 75 points.
Second we have the shooty inquisitor with retinue. This is an inquisitor as above with a combination of heavy bolter servitor, plasma cannon servitors, sages and / or mystics with the most common being 2 heavy bolter, plasma cannon, 2 sages and a mystic.
Third we have GKT squad. This is best done with 4-6 terminators ( including the bro-cap ) and is best with 1 having a psycannon and 1-2 TH + SS incase of running into walkers or to instant kill most enemy ICs with.
Forth is an assassin. Eversor and Callidus make the best choice here, and the tactical advantage they bring to the army can be extremely useful.
First is the tride and true vanilla grey knight squad. This should be 8-10 grey knights ( including the justicar ) do not under estimate the power of the stormbolter.
Second is what has become known as the mini purgation squad. It is 5-6 grey knights ( including the justicar ) 2 of which have a psycannon.
Third is IST. Best used for extra tank hunting or plasma guns should be 6 men with 2 melta guns or plasma ( mixing is bad ) then put into a rhino / chimera ( extra armor and smoke on these is a must )
Onto fast attack.
Not much choice here. Mainly used to place grey knight squads after you have 2 troop choices so that you can deploy them at a later phase or deepstrike them. ( follow options 1 and 2 in the troops area for these guys as well )
Last we have heavy support.
First up is the dreadnought. Best option is twin-linked lascannon + missle launcher as we lack anti-tank although assault cannon + ccw with or without the incinerator can be extremely useful too. They should always be given extra armor and smoke can be useful should you have the points.
Second is the LR / LRC. Should have extra armor and smoke can be useful should you have the points.
Third is the orbital strikes. This is more effective against the enemy player in most games then it is against units. Lance or melta are the only ones worth taking. Best at guarding your flank or making heavy enemy units move out of cover.
Notes: Grandmasters are not really needed until 1500+ points also you should have atleast 1 dread / anti-tank choice per 500-750 points.
Hope this helps people who are starting DH / Grey knights.
Now for a question I had for other Grey knight players. Have you found that a lot of people think very poorly of grey knight armies in general and has thier out looked been changed after playing you. So far to me everyone that hasnt played me before has thought grey knights were one of the worst armies to play is this due to a lot of newb DH players or am I just really lucky in my games? Has anyone else encountered this as well?
( example: last week I fought a Plague marine army and he said he didnt even want to play be because he would just kill me as grey knight armies suck, but by turn 4 I had almost tabled him and only lost 12 PAGK and a dreadnought, all of my squads were still above 50%)

- You must set fire to water or you will be extinguished.
Eh. Most of the Info is useful, but I found I like to break most rules of building Grey Knight Armies. On to the question - Yes, I was made fun of for my list..then stomped by opponent.
In time, however, my army has become one that few want to face, especially my foes at the game store league, who strongly favor infantry-heavy lists. Killing infantry is what GKs do best! :ninja:
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

a squad of 10 grey knights is a sick troops choice. they spit out 20 stormbolter shots a turn, which is more then enough to wipe out full squads of anything with savz 5+ or greater, and in cc, they get 3 power weapon attacks, and 18 reg attacks, all at S 6. That i really like. the only thing though, is that i always have some storm troopers, so that i can have some meat sheilds, or deepstriking cheap tank hunters. i buy reg guardmen and convert, so i get more bang for my buck. 4 squads with 2 melta or plasma guns each is really really fun. or i get veteran squads with allies, and give them shotguns, just cause the look really really cool
Thanks for the advice
Currently I'm in the process of painting a GM and two termie bodyguards, and two squads of 7 GK, one squad with incinerators (for close assault) and one squad with psycannons (to support the other squads).
Is there anything you could suggest to improve on this, and then what would you suggest my next addition be? More bodyguards? More GK to bulk out the squads?
(I've got an Inquisitor model I'm converting, some Storm Troopers and a Vindicare but they'll all being put on the back burner atm to finish painting my army core as above)
