Just wondering wat these old ultra Marines can do, and if they have anything special that might sway me to there side?
their only real strength is that the get the nid hunters (which while using krak grenades against nids, just slaughters em) those honour guards (a power weapon and bolter but no true grit? WTF?) and the special characters
and calgnar leading a termie command squad in a land raider might sound tempting but, thats alot of points and he's a Special character with a powerfist WTF? that's pointless!
they have tiguris or whatever who has double range on all his psychic powers and he can choose at no additional points (I think) but can't use a familiar (boo-hoo!)
the chappy is just a chappie who can help with morale checks for nearby squads, nothing much...
Create flames for a galaxy and it will be warm. Put a galaxy in flames and it will be warm for the rest of it's existence.
Ultramarines can take any of the units in the army list from the codex, with only the limitations of those specific units holding them back. (Like only being able to have a single venerable dreadnought.)
The major weakness of an ultramarine army is that it cannot make use of the trait system, because ultramarines practice each of the aspects the traits are based from rather than focusing on certain ones. (Since thats what the traits are, focusing on specific aspects.)
Depending on how you look at it, the fact that ultramarines are more or less an chapter that has a balance of shooting and close combat can be taken as either a strength or weakness. (If you look at many ultramarine lists, they focus more on assaulting despite the balance thing, since that is more fluff based.)
Don't forget that Calgar is amongst one of the only special characters that can change his wargear between artificer armour or terminator armour. That and he can choose whether or not he passes or fails leadership based tests and confers the ability to any squad he leads.
So what if he can't take a familiar, the guy is hitting you with his powers long before any librarian with familiar could anyway.
What can the ultramarines do that most chapters cannot Rifleman270? They can field more special units than most space marine chapters out there, thats for sure. After that you really have to look for the good and the bad for yourself, because the ultramarines are merely a vanilla space marine army. The do not benefit from any of the traits, and at the same time do not suffer from the drawbacks when taking traits.

the short answer is that the ultramarines do not have any strengths compared to other marine chapters. they also do not have any glaring weaknesses

hmmm this is interesting, there only real strong point is against nids and they can field several heros, but they are also limeted on some units like the dreadnaught..., wat else might they be limited on?
