Wow, this is my first post in a long time, and I'd like to start by saying it's good to be back. I've been playing Imperial Guard (sort of?) for nearly a year and am just about to join my local club which I've just discovered by sheer luck.
So really what I'm saying is that it's good to be back and where should I head from here. So far I have...
55 guardsmen- lasguns/ a few Gl's/sergeants
2 leman Russ
10 HWT's (3 Hbolter, 3 lascannon, 4 missile launchers)
I was thinking of going with some fast attack, either a hellhound and/or sentinels but I'm not sure. Maybe it would be better to go with more HWT's and more men first. Or to buy stormtrooper special weapons and a chimera for them. Then of course there's the very tempting basilisk.
So, bearing in mind what I have and that I'm planning on making a balanced, marginally'competitive list, what do you IG vets. out there suggest?
Any help appreciated!
In a word, plasma. But you'll find I'm a plasma zealot.
RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
Plasma, hey! I can work with that.
Where do you reccomend I add it... line squads, stormies, vets...?
EVERYWHERE, almost half the armies you play will be MEQ (Marine Equivalent) who hate plasma. I have every squad in my army with plasma as (IMO) the other Special weapons just don't cut it.
Grenade Launchers lack strength in the frag variety and you are unlikely to get more than 2 hits anyway. Krak is acceptable but lacks the rapid rate of fire and AP of plasma. There ability to move and fire is good but is nulified by having a HW.
Flamers are very short ranged and will probably be used only once in a battle. Nevertheless, good in some instances (like having 4 in one command section and frying foul xenos).
Meltas have a nice niche area of usage and 1 or 2 in your army would do very little harm (especially if you play a full drop troop army where they are your only AT weapons). Instant killing SM Commanders is good also.
Plasmas will usually kill 0.417 enemies a turn, 0.83 at 12" or less but will die 11% of the time (44% at 12"!).
Anyway, to answer you question...
Any line squads with a heavy weapon should have a plasma gun otherwise they could have others. Stormies should have plasma guns or meltas if you want but definately not GL don't waste their high BS and extra armour (good for plasma, only 8.3% and 33.3% fatality rate). Vets are the same as Stormtroopers except for armour (so if you want either Stormies or Vets to have meltas, pick the Vets). Some people get their plasma guns in command sections with medics as well (I have never tried it but it should work in theory) because the medic can save them from overheating, be warry that the enemy will fire on them heavily though.
Thanks for the replys.
So, as I see it, if you have a helluva lot of plasma, losing a few to overheating isn't going to outweigh the benefits since you have so much more. That's a nice idea but plasma guns are expensive (at leat in oz) at $20AUD for 1 melta and 1 plasma.
But I'll see if I can possibly converts some.
Ok, besides plasma- is there anything else my army's lacking most?
