I was looking through mostly recent army lists for space marines on this forum and didn't see anyone using Rhinos or Razorbacks. This makes me think they are not worth using. Do they have any merit or are the other options that space marines have make their transports unpopular?
I've noticed that also... as a player new to space marines I have a different opinion.
The way I see it... for 25pts more than a sentinel, you get a twin linked lascannon, bs4 and better armour... also you cant get locked in combat.
(these points are taken from the BA codex, I dont have my SM one here)
well, in a vanilla marine list, a drop pod is a far better choice than a rhino, for getting your marines into combat. It's a bit different with dark angels tho. rhino's should be virtually compulsory with every DA tac squad.
Razorbacks are useful as the cheap man's Predator, but in all honesty Space Marines don't have a very good mechanised representation. Most of their vehicles have 11/10/10 AV, and the ones that don't (Predators) have this piddly little front arc with 13 and a huuuuge side arc with 11 that can get popped by starcannons and scatter lasers.
And Rhinos are just yelling "Shoot me! Shoot me! Entangle my troops!" They're called death coffins for a reason. They need an AV boost.

IIRC rhinos and razorbacks and most rhino variants are 11/11/10, not 11/10/10.
Depends on the situation for their use. Razorbacks are the marine sentinel with benefits, poor man's predator, w/e you want to call it.
Rhinos en masse can be useful for a number of reasons, such as Space Wolf rhino rushin' cheese and all that jazz. If you can actually get them up to the line to release their cargo, they are great, and you can use them to create firing lines and block off assaults and all kinds of stuff, even if they get blown up. Trouble is getting them there. They're eminently killable/screw-uppable.

Rhinos have their uses, so do Razorbacks. The reasons you don't see many in lists on here can be attributed to a few reasons.
1.) People on here constantly denounce the sodding things. So when they do appear on army lists, the first thing people usually say is along the lines of "Hey goober, thats XX wasted points! Buy a (thing which the repliant prefers)!"
2.) Rhino models, are, frankly, boring.
3.) Razorbacks, are rare, and generally if someone's going to spend the cash, he's going to try to get a predator, vindicator or a fancier, 'better' tank for his troubles. Rhinos come with a lot of the army boxes.
4.) Dawn of War inspires many new players to think the Rhino is unarmed.
5.) The Razorback's surviability is less that of a lascannon in a tactical squad.
Rhinos do have their perks, including...
1.) XX point, expendable, tank shocking machine. Force a morale save every round.
2.) Mobile, friendly, -armed- terrain.
3.) Drive-by plasma and flamer attacks. It doesn't count as open topped even with marines firing from the hatch, thanks to the power armor.
Razorbacks have theirs too...
1.) Allow for a tactical squad to essentially 'split its fire' between two targets.
2.) Provides much more firepower to a potentially cut-off squad.
3.) While unable to claim objectives, sure as hell makes it harder for an opponent to do the same.
4.) Can be easilly turned into a whirlwind just by swapping out its turret.
Hmm.... I'm playing ultramarines so I might want to use the spare bits from the Predator that came with the megaforce I got to turn the razorback that came with it into another Predator, it will take some creative converting to do, but should be interesting. Sounds like Rhinos and Razorbacks are too volatile, although a cheap twinlinked las cannon via the Razarback does sound interesting. If i get lazy about converting it, I might go for that instead >.>
One thing I'll say about rhinos (which I use in a DH army, so may not be exactly the same for SM) is that once they have dropped off my IST's they make great blockers... be it stopping people from shooting a flank or making the enemies counter charge a little harder (as they will now have to go around the tank to get into close combat) giving my IST's another round of shooting and preparing for the charge.
Because they aren't worth much and don't have much in the way of fire support, most people don't wish to waste bullets blowing it up (as they see dreads or tanks as more immediate threats) also they make great suicide bombers put in front of an Avatar to slow it down and he will blow it up and potentially kill a lot of his own men and maybe take a wound.
Funniest time was when a unit of genestealers did this and the explosion (so many rending attacks, how can it not blow up) killed about 10 out of his unit of 12...
Yeah, if they actually get to the lines and drop off their targets, they become infinitely more valuable. My own experience applies more to mass immolator Sisters rushes, but the opponent quickly starts fretting about other stuff as soon as there's not a boatload of infantry in there to stop, and so you can really screw around with him in all the ways said just above.
