I am starting a Guard Army and have decided to go for a largely infantry based force - I will have some tanks, but not very many in my finished force. The army I am designing is, fluff-wise, meant to be used in trench warfare and urban arenas - pretty much places where a large mechanised force would be more hindrance than help.
The way I see the army operating is as a largely defensive force - infantry platoons and heavy weapon squads - supported by an 'assault' element consisting of an infantry platoon, storm troopers and possibly support weapons and maybe a leman russ. Is this viable or should I just save my money and time?
The question I then pose is this: Are heavy weapons better off in the infantry platoon squads, or dedicated heavy weapon platoons/support squads for command platoons?
Or is a mix of the two more effective? And does anyone play a similar style army?
In my openion it is best to put all heavy weapons in squads except lasscannons and mortars. This gives the heavy weapon 10 wounds before it is removed. I dont put lasscannons in squads cause it should fire on tanks which would wast the rest of the squads shots.
My openion on tanks is in larger games of 1500 pts take atleast 2 frontline tanks (tanks that the enemy will see) because if you take just one it will take all of your enemys anti tanks and will either be disablees or destroyed. In my 1500 i take on tank a basalisk which stays out of sight most of the time.
I hopw this as Helped.
The most dangerous men in the world are the ones who have nothing to lose.
I have something of the same style of army mostly built/still building.
Now my idea is to take three standard Leman Russ tanks or two LRBTs and a single Basilisk. While for heavy weapons, I tend to stick each squad with a different heavy weapon (yes I use all five of 'em). Not only that, I also use four squads of Storm troopers who have their own transports. With a Veteran Squad armed with a mortar who act's as their local artillery unit.
Hope I helped, then again each player has styles that work best for them. So experiment with different tactics to get a comfortable feel with your units and their abilities and limits.
I'll be damned before the soldiers of the Emperor are just left to rot!

"DISS NOT THE EMPEROR'S POINTED STICK, HERETIC!"
If it doesn't work with the Emperor. Then it's been officially Karmooned!!!
BEWARE THE POWER OF THE LIGHT-BRIGHT!
Since you'll be a mainly static force, either option can work: if your line squads aren't moving too much, then they'll be able to stand and fire.
Personally, I like the idea of dedicated Fire Support/Heavy Weapon squads, so I max out on those HQ Support Squads, and just give my line squads special weapons.
Try and see which works for you is probably the only advice here!
