In my 1000 point BA list i have a 5 man veteran assault squad with 2 melta guns and its 185 points and they get shot to bits while occationally doing something good with the meltas but i wanted to know for 185 what other alternatives there are for a BA player? or should i stick with this squad?
I go with either an honur guard (depending on HQ) or a tooled out dread in a drop pod.
I find that vet assualts for what they worth arn't overly effective. Where a dread can be very imposing and quite effective.
Also 1000pts is a bit low to be including such a high points squad. What about 2 small scout sqauds or a 5 man tac with razor back?
Whats the rest of your list look like ?

98% of the teen population has smoked weed, if you are the 2% that hasn't, and blindly believe everything you read on the net, then put this in your signature.

A tooled-out dread would be just as expensive if not more and die just as easily. An Honour squad is the exact same thing as a vet assault squad, just with a few different options (like medic, champion, tech, etc) so I'm not sure that would help you anyway.
There's nothing wrong with Vet assault squads, and since they are only 10 more points base than the regular assault squad, they are even more effective (+1attack for 2 points) The problem will be with your set up (deployment), tactics or makeup of the rest of your army. All these difficulties are increased (imo) by playing in such small games. In small games, the guy who can field the most guns and long range shooting should win hands down, evey time against the guy with more expensive close combat or elite troops. BA are oneo f the most expensive (pointwise) armies per man out there. most of their troops (Vet Assault Squads included) are twice as much as a regular marine. Combine this with increased cost of weapons for BA and already included vet sgts in all of the squads and you would be lucky to field half as many guys as any other MEQ army (except for DA) in the game. That means i t will be a whole lot harder for you to get across the table without having your army massacred before you get into shooting or assaulting range. If you want us to help you - give us more info.
1. What is the make up of the rest of your army
2. Who are you playing mostly (their army makeup as well)
3. In small games, if you want to win, you will have to insist on a few things such as; increased amount of LOS-blocking terrain. You should have some shooting as well. I find devastator squads are good for long range shooting (missile launchers, heavy bolters and plasma cannons all have longer than average range (missile launchers are probably the most versatile inthe game). You don't want to take tanks in small games because they can be taken out of commission on the first turn. I would also put in some tact squads with long range weaponry if possible. All these things let you shoot at the enemy at a distance and cause them to shoot at you while your assault squads use the terrain to gradually make their way up to the enemy. If you just send them out across open land to get the enemy, they will probably die before they get close enough to do their job.
I think you may be using your vet assault squad as something other than an assault squad. Why does it have 2 melta guns? Are you hunting tanks with it? If so, there are cheaper and more effective armour busters (attack bikes, landspeeders, lascannon in tact squad, etc) I would use a small squad (all your squads will be small in a 1000pt game) for assaulting only. That means if they are going to have weapons they should have power weapons. 1 melta is okay, maybe a powerfist depending on who you are versing. But for this small a game I think 1 power weapon would be fine. That would be 165pts.
I'm going to start using a 10-man veteran assault squad with 2 assaultweapons (havn't figured out which yet), a pf and twin lightning claws. They aren't much more expensive than the standard assaultsquads and comes with 2 attacks (3 with bp+ccw). It's really worth thinking about...
ok thnks for the help guys!!
Here is my list and i have mostly played against orks(speed freaks) and vanilla marines
Chaplain jump pack -120 pts
Assault squad +5 to unit, Vsgt w/power weapon -250pts
Assault squad Vsgt w/power weapon -155pts
Veteran Assault squad flamerx2 or meltagunx2 (depending on opponent), power sword -175pts w/flamers -185pts w/meltagun
Death Company (4) jump packs -20pts
Devastator squad missle (4), +5 to unit -270pts
consider dropping five points somewhere and picking up Lemartes instead of a Chaplain. For 5 points you get an extra wound, better equipment, and an extra leadership point
