Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've been painting 40k models for 10 years so i have quite a collection ... and I thought a short while ago that it was time to actually field an army of somekind!
(I've never painted Ultramarines but always liked their look and background so I chose them)
Right now I have 2 painted tactical squads (from the plastic box) and a painted commander... i also have an unpainted term squad, unpainted assault squad, unpainted scouts and an unpainted dreadnought
my QUESTION is...
** now that my bare minimum troop requirement is finished.... in WHAT ORDER should i paint the rest of my marines, with special attention to which squads you think would be more important to a small marine army (specifically one that plays mostly against Tau)...
So basically, what models (out of the unpainted ones that I have) will get me the most Tau kills  ?
Thanks! I really appreciate the advice... been painting for along time and glad to finally start playing!
IF OPPONENT = TAU THEN PRINT Select one: choice$
IF choice$ = whirlwind THEN PRINT Good against fire warriorss
IF choice$ = vindicator THEN PRINT Good against everything but broadsides
IF choice$ = marines THEN PRINT good all around guys very useful
ELSE PRINT Everything with ap4 or better
Hail servant of the Emperor!
against the very long range oriented tau..you have a few basic options in the Space marines force and Armory, I too have played manya game agaisnt Tau, so let me offer some advice:
Out shoot them:
Not as hard as it sounds, as they have the more powerful basic gun...but our Faith in the emperor and higher BS,(Tau=3, SM=4) It is fairly equal. Add to that our ability to wade through most of their Firepower to close the gap in Range and it is fairly balanced..in our favor. DO be wary of the Pulse Carbine's however. A good choice for weathering the downpour of Tau fire is your Termie Squad. THey are nearly invulnerable to the tau when you take into account the Invulnerable save, the 2+ armor save and then the So-So aim fo the Tau. If you are able to close, your powerfists will DESTROY them in close combat, shoudkl roughly equal 10-15 Dead Tau turn. And you will be laying down MUCHO storm bolter fire at the same time.
Simply put...a Ten man squad of Assault Marines can chop, bash, hack, and chopt heir way through Most, if not all of a tau army. Deepstrike them, or Jump them behind a Few Rhino's full of troops to keep them Safe...your objective should write itself out in 2-3 rounds of close Combat.
Out think them:
Oh the Tau speak of their 'Graeater Good', but we have faith int he Supreme Emperor of Mankind. And with the intellect of Gulliman, the Strength of Dorn, and the Resolve of Ferrus Manus...we will win. Most Tau players KNOW the tau are shooty..and thus jsut want to set a firebase and milk the other army Dry...Devestator squads, Brother. Relatively Cheap..a squad of four Heavy bolters will Armor Pierce theri unblessed armor, more easily wiping out the Alien scum. Plasma Cannosn as well...an instant kill, though costly int helives of our Brothers too terribly often. Therefore, the cheaper, mroe reliable Rocket launcher, add on it's ability to lay waste with Frag missles, or Instant kill and Battlesuit or Broad side with Krak, they are a sound investment. With any three of these tactics you should lay waste to the Tau.
An After Thought:
For me a Dev Sqaud of either all Lascannons/or half and half Lascannons/Krak missile launchers will always be worht the points in games agaisnt the Tau. Brodsides may be eliminated very quickly, as with the Devilfish and Hammerhead most Tau seem to relish. Remeebr the Devestator,s Remember the Terminators.
My opinion and Advice?
The Dread can fall to Pulse RIfle fire from 30' away. Paint your Termies and your Assault the best and most detailed. They will mount increassingly wonderful death tolls among the Tau.

Thanks for the encouraging words! i have one more question though - about instant killing the crisis battlesuit with a krak missle - now i don't actually own the tau codex - my tau opponent does...
when we last played my marines hit him multiple times with krak missles and never scored an instant kill - my buddy said that the suit added +1 toughness to his commander. is this for real? wouldn't the +1 toughness already be included in the stats like terminators +1 A?
Thanks for all the help - any advice would be great - its a really cool game!
"Courage and Honour!"
The battle suits add to the base character's toughness. However, the normal rule is that the "instant kill" uses the character's base toughness, not the increased value. If his normal toughness is 4, then a S8 weapon would cause instant death. This is how it works for any sort of biker and that's how I imagine it works for Tau unless there's some special exception for them: You can probably find an "official" rule to show him amongst the FAQ: Tau on GW's website.
I would suggest painting the Termies and Assault marines because they can deep strike against the pathetic hand to hand of the Tau. The general goal when playing against Tau is to get into hand to hand, cuz they can flat out outshoot most armies
Servants of the Emperor, greetings again!
Fellow Brother, let me assure you and correct your Misguided Tau follwing frineds mistake. The Battlesuit does add one to the toughness...however thsi is ONLY for the purpose of wounding, where as if you would normally need a 3 to wound him on your D6 roll, you would Need a 4 Instead.
The rasied toughness does NOT, I repeat, NOT stop an instant kill froma strength 8 or Higher weapon strength, I.E. A Lascannon, Powerfist, Dreadnought, Krak Missle, Multi Melta, Meltagun, Hunter Killer Missle..these will ALL instant kill the Battlesuits. Have your friend CAREFULLY read his codex on the area of the higher toughness value.

grrrrrrreat thanks for all the tips - i'm playing against my tau friend today.. i'll see if i can get some instant kills
thanks everyone for the advice! it'll definately be terms than assault squad as my next units!
geeez i hope i win... i've been thinking a lot about what plan of attack to use.. but he's prob in the tau forum right now and planning ahead as well!
against tau and necron never never use rhinos as cover expesialy fullones that a good way to get a bunch of dead marines and an open assault squad
Technically, outshooting a tau army is possible but very difficult. It would be a whole lot wiser to just go up with termies and assaulties and just let em loose and they'll have a field day ripping apart the tau in cc.
