hello, all. i am new to the forums, and i had a question. i am thinking of getting back in to 40k after a couple year lay-off. i used to play space marines, but i just picked up an imperial guard codex and am thinking of starting an army (sick of the 3+ standard saves, time to feel what its like to be on the receiving end of armor negating bolter fire, lol). the question is: can you give a santioned psyker an honorifica ? if so then if you gave him one and a force weapon? would this be useful to have in an army? you would have the equivalent of an HSO running around with a force weapon.
Yes you can give him both bits of wargear, and no, I find him a total waste of points.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
Some people favour the Honorifica Sanction Psyker with force wep. but IMO gaurd should not splurge on CC units (apart from the costomary PW for officers and every now and then a hidden PF toting Commissar) and instead spend points on units do deny the enemy combat (more shooting to kill the oppositions assault elements etc.).

I think Triumph is right. To boost the CC-ability of a Guard like that would make him something like an eight year bully on drugs. Sure, he would be cruel compared with his peers, like a rat among mice. The problem is that we are not facing other mice, not even cats,we face tigers.
If I were to use one, ever, I would keep him quite far from my HQ squad as I need the Senior Commanders Ld to even be able to shoot straight. I'd put him in a Chimera with Stormtroopers, 2 Meltas and a Power Weapon wielding sarge, close my eyes and hope for the best.
Hey Chief! Welcome to LO!
Admittedly, because of the structure of the rest of the army, a CC Force Psyker is pretty useless. I'd say forget about.... BUT!
I love to use a Guard army with Die Hards, Close Order Drill, and Veteran Sargeants. I also take copious amounts of Troops and Grenade Launchers, low Str gun spam at it's best. It's this army that I use the HIM Force Psyker.
The army never needs to rely on Ld Bubbles for HTH, and the Doctrines mean I stick to the enemy like... stuff... does to a blanket ^_^ It's funny how people get scared of 20+ Guard screaming down your throat, spitting glows of laser, taking a charge and fighting to the last man- because it locks down their unit from participating in anything else, apart from killing a few crummy Guardsmen
I also take large platoons, so that I have minimal Command Groups, and take many Psykers so that I can attatch the HIM Force bloke to a regular Guard unit. The Psyker isn't an IC, so he effectively has a 10 wound buffer (!!!). He also benefits from Die Hards and CoD, great for his stats when he goes to kill something (especially CoD).
Anyways, my point is, I use the HIM Force combo in this army, because after I lock something down, I can freely cruise over to a Character or Big Gribbly and poke it to death with a Force Weapon; made easier by the fact he doesn't need to be in base to bsae contact with the target, just in range. Wounding the target is the problem, but hopefully you get a 6 on that all-important wound roll somewhere
Bottom line, it is a lot of effert to go about an army like what I just talked about- even then, you are relying on too many factors to go your way. You need to keep HIM and his unit alive, for starters, and then get the Force Weapon in position via footslogging, sacrific Guard units to lock the target down.... even so, maybe all that effort to do so doesn't result in you killing the target anyways!
It isn't really worth hunting something in HTH with HIM. You're better off to play the ranged game, shooting anything that moves, sending out a few Speedbump units to slow something down, and generally grind the opponent down to a loss.
Still, it's very rewarding to kill Bloodthirsters/Carnifexes/Marine Masters/Necron Lords etc with a simple Guard model! That in itself is the driving force to me even bothering to go thourgh all the trouble to do so (and probably still lose anyways... but it's a moral win!)

lol! good points going around... Besides your CC leadership bubble, not much of your guard is made for close combat, Ogryns put aside. Even so, slapping your only psyker as your HQ advisor will not make him shine for the points you pay for him, since your HQ command squad isn't very likely to go alone into the maw of death, lol.
Fluff-wise, would the Guard ever award a Sanctionned Psyker with such an award? Hah, half of them think they are boltheads and spooks, while the psykers themselves aren't the sharpest knives in the lot, lol.
What do Khorne Berzerkers say to Necrons after chopping some of their bits off? "BLOOD FOR... Eh? Come on! You just take the fun out of it... Scream! Yell! Awww... not even a trace of guts..." *sniffles and kicks dirt*
"You can go far with a smile. You can go even further with a smile and a gun"
I'm not a big fan of Sanctioned Psykers at all in my army lists. The only possible psyker I would use is the HI Force Weapon variant but the points cost is so high that I would rather have the additional squad over the single psyker.
What do you call a lasgun with a laser sight?
It won't lose you the game, but it takes decent planning. You only get a shot at two LD 9 bubbles with IG. Your Command HQ and an Honorifica. So if you go with a force weapon psyker, you are sending both into melee, leaving your Lt's with LD8 bubbles. Do this at your peril. Or you can buy two psykers, but a naked one with your HSO and put the melee one into a random platoon HQ for countercharge.
Doable, but at the end of the day, 8 Rough Riders cost, what? 88 points with lances?
RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
Too expensive. To make Guard somewhat suitable for CC just give officers power weapons or a powerfist.
I've got to say, that I've seen them used to great effect in our local area. Does it always work-no, but the owner has a blast with him and he seems to hold his own. Mind you, this is used in a CC/tank oriented army.
IG can certainly pull off CC well, just add a few upgrades (carapace for one) and hordes can drag down almost anything.
And if you like them, use them=)
