I really like the "new" termies and want to convert and field an army consisting of almost only dudes in tactical dreadnought armour. Talked to a friend down at my local gaming club (which playes DA and has got a DW army). I just want your opinion as to what I should buy and in what order. I think that I'm starting off with a 1500 pts army (I think that's about 4 squads of terminators and a couple of vehicles). So - in a 5-man squad, what should I take; what will make them more versitile/specialized?

It'd be a good idea to start with the basics. Belial and the Codex, plus two Terminator Boxes and 2 assault Terminator Boxes
This should give you a good base for a 1000pt army, as you need as many numbers as you can in these small games.
You could then follow up with a Dreadnought, other characters in Termie armour, or a Land Raider, just for some flavor.
You could also invest in some Ravenwing Bikes, to take advantage of the Teleport Homers, giving you a little bit of an edge in some games, but that's up to you.
Thanks a lot for the info! I'll be ordering shortly,
My advice on squad set up is:
1 x PW/SB
1 x AC
1 x LC
1 x CF/SB
1 x PF/SB
Don't even consider the Cyclone as being a first choice Deathwing weapon. It was only just about useable with two in a squad plus Tank Hunter, but now with only the one and no Tank Hunter.... well I suppose if points are tight then fine. As you can see I prefer shooty squads, this is because with so few models on the table I want them all doing something and don't want too many termies just hanging about waiting for something to assault. Plus, I use the old adage of not assaulting anything until I absolutely need to or know that I won't be tied up for longer than two game turns of cc.
I agree on stocking up with termies first then padding out with Dreads as long range fire support. A Ravenwing bike squad is interesting to take advantage of the homers but they do suck up the points in small games, and you will need 6 of them otherwise they just don't last long.
Best of luck.
