Okay - bizarre occurance at the weekend.
I'm tidying out my terrain cupboard and find a plastic bag with three battered Chimera wrapped in it!
They were painted a vile camo-green colour from back in the days when I used to collect Catachans but I've managed to save them and re-paint them in the nice red colour of my Mechanicus Army.
My Mechanicus force uses the Grenadiers Doctrine and I have the full allowance of thirty Storm Troopers as three Troop choices.
Given that the Grenadiers Doc doesn't allow them to Deep Strike or Infiltrate I was wondering if I should mount all thirty as a mobile attack force?
My other Troop choices are a minimum sized (25) Infantry Platoon and an Armoured Fist Squad.
So in order to use my re-discovered Chimera I can either mount the Storm Troopers in them or take the Armoured Fist Doctrine and mount my Infantry Platoon in it.
I'm not sure which would be a better idea. I'm leaning towards the Storm Troopers as dismounting a Infantry Platoon infront of the enemy is just asking to get them killed.
Grenediers lends itself to being a mobile Tank heavy army, and yes IMO Grenediers shouldn't be used without a Chimera unless you're just trying to get a 50pt Troop unit.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
Though I'd disagree with the sentiment above that Grenadiers should always have a Chimera, I do agree they're the unit which lend themselves best to being mounted in your case, they're a fully mobile unit while Infantry Platoons have the potentialy to be static firebase with heavy weapons.
I use Grenadiers all the time, and generally give them a Chimera.
Grenadiers are good troops, but need to be closer to the enemy to be effective. This doesn't mean I rush them forward 'up the gut' at the enemy however. Grenadiers are still fragile so I use them in support of my tanks, reacting to enemy threats where they may be needed, or to grab mission objectives at the end of a game.
1> Give them a Chimera with Smoke, EA and Heavy Stubber. This makes the Chimera mobile and a decent 9 shot 36" range tank on its own.
2> Make sure you have 'better' tanks to draw fire away from your Chimeras. Enemies always shoot at Lemans, Demolishers and Hellhounds first.
3> I like full squads of 10 with two Plasma Guns a Vet Sgt with Power Weapon. Sometimes I give them two Meltas, but prefer Plasma for the extra shots. Rapid fire meltdown is part of the fun!:drinking:
4> Don't 'rush' them forward. Use them as mobile reserves for a tank force.
