Hi, well here is the deal. I realy like the new dark angels codex, and was hoping to perhaps consider starting a solid army that I could call my main signiture force. All this time I have been pumping dollar after dollar into dark eldar and was kina hoping to get a feel for something else. I noticed that the only popular chapters out there are mostly blood angels, ultras, BTs and deathwing. To be honest I kinda am sick off all those usual things so decided to give a try to something new. I picked ravenwing and was hoping to get some suggestions about to to effectively make a nice force that specializes on fast attack.
Note, I am not making white scars so no bikes.
1. I am still yet to make an army list for people to comment, but generaly and fluff wise. What kind of troops do ravenwing lists feature, I dont want to use bikes since thats mostly for white scars so I was hoping to include things that would give me a lot of assault cannons. Perhaps a unit of 5 termies(w/ AC), some land speeders(Acs/melta) and maybe even tornado, some tactical squads of 10, a dread(Fist/Ac). Lastly maybe put in a baal predator. Again this is just ideas on the table.
2. How competative can a ravenwing list be, can I succesfully counter large nid godzilla/swarm armies? Can I counter an infantry heavy guard that will outgun me 10 :1. I am guessing that if I manage to stick 10 Acs in the force, it should be at least half way to competative...
3. Fun, how fun is it. I personaly think it will be "different", since I will be using things that stadard marine armies dont feature every battle.
4. How difficult is it to play something like ravenwing? I mean, yes every model is in power armor so it wont be nearly as demanding as dark eldar, but still I realy want to know how difficult it will be to field this kind of force.
Thanks in advance...
1: Well, the biggest issue here is that the Bike is the backbone of the Ravenwing Army, whereas White Scars can take tactical squads in rhinos and still be fluffy. You certainly could add those other units (but not Baal Predators, cause they're for Blood Angels), but then that wouldn't be a Ravenwing army. More like a Double wing or Multiwing Army.
2:Ravenwing can be competative, but it takes a very subtle hand to pull it off. The biggest issue with NidZilla lists is that they love to have the enemy near them. Ravenwing excel at close range firefights, and that's just doom against a Tyranid army. Guard however, may have a tough time, as their basic (and most abundant) gun will only wound on a 6, so they'll rely on their heavy weapons. But I'd advise going for the objective than a straight out rout.
3: It is certainly fun. Nothing like having bikes in the enemy deployment zone on turn 1.
4: Again, the Dark Angels is a very tactical style army now. It may take a very subtle hand to properly use a Ravenwing army. However, utilizing cover and terrain will most likely gain you a win. Utilize some of those Dark Eldar Tactics.
