I'm sure a few people here do or have done an Armoured Company. Are they cool, bit of a laugh?
Just tempted to have a little go with one at some point, just after some pro's, con's etc.
If it's fun, i'm in!
Well for one... an AC is an army you could play, even when drunk. Just grab 2 hands of dice, declare what to shoot and roll.
But in all seriousness; i'm building an AC myself, I played against one once (my 2nd 40k game ever). It looked like fun, and by reading the "codex" it still does. However; keep in mind that vehicles are pretty much 1 wound models for a hefty pricetag. Some doctrines for AC lists make sure you're a bit safer, but still... a single meltabomb can cost you about 200 to 300 points. And given that that's pretty much the only thing you've got around there (expensive units)...
I wouldn't go for an AC if you're looking to start a new army, at least, not as a basic army. 1. AC lists aren't allowed everywhere. 2. It costs an arm and a leg. I mean; I still pay 35 euro's for a leman russ. Some models aren't even widely available so for me it was Forgeworld parts. Cool stuff though, but yeah.. rather expensive. 3. While it costs an arm and a leg, you've pretty much got a bunch of models around which you'll rarely use anywhere else. Sure; having 5 russ-es is nice, but given a normal IG list can field up to 3 you're pretty much set for AC only.
Wait...now it sounds like it's just cons.
Pro's; In a single shooting fase you could pretty much win the game. Laying down a 2 handsfull of large blast templates hurts.. even marines. And heck... imagine how impressive it looks when you're facing about 30 to 40 marines in a 2000 points game and you're like fielding even less models. Sounds odd... but fielding a couple of tanks with the intention of "bring it on" is so funny.
Just make sure you've got your sides covered up and go for tankhunting weapons first (dark/brightlances, lascannons) Ordnance is your friend.
But like I said, be sure of what you want this army to be. Of course, what the armylist will contain, and when and how you're fielding the army. Don't expect to see tourny play with it.
Cheers mate, good info!
I do have a normal IG army I use, which coincidentilly is Krieg.... so I know all about expensive armies, ha!
I have 4 Leman Russes at the minute, so was looking at grabbing some of the differnt turrets etc from Forgeworld, and a few other bits and bobs and doing a 1500 pt AC list.
it would be hella cool to roll up with an army of tanks!
fun against marines and other few but powerful models' armies
a nightmare aginst horde armies(soo many orks not enough blasts)
Heh... with Krieg you surely do know about expensive stuff. I might go Vostroyan for my (first) guard army.
My AC will be more Chaos-ed up as I'm building LaTD at the moment and have a russ or 2 and a chimera for that as well. Got a bunch of Russes cheap through a friend. Just the FW turrets; makes it pretty much equally expensive or even more.
Besides russes there's a plethora of other tankmodels you can use for your AC. So perhaps you could go AC with what you have. I doubt that massive usage of the non standard russ is necessary.
Though... if I think about it; 2 exterminators, a vanquisher. Exterminators make up for poor BS of standard tanks IMO (TL autocannon, 3 H. Bolters). Vanquisher for tankhunting as my ace.
Currently my AC consists of 2 Vanquishers, 2 Exterminators, 5 Russes, 2 Demolishers, and 2 Conquerors. And thats just the tanks. Variety with your tanks is kinda a tough one with this army. I started with three regular russes for my normal IG and expanded with the demolishers and after consideration the vanquishers to start my AC and went from there. Most of my advice is from my experience of course and may not work well for everyone since I play Heavy Armor lists almost exclusively since I tend to dislike sentinels, hellhounds and salamanders while using Stormtroopers instead of Armored Fist Squads.
Vanquisher - Tank hunting obviously due to its 2d6 AP roll but the additional range is useful if you can manage to slink to the enemy corner and flank fire. I use these instead of destroyers since the one point of AP is not worth it when the vanquisher can additionally fire a regular ordnance round (at 96" no less).
Exterminator - Infantry and Transport killers. Always take at least two and try for three (I'm too lazy to convert another for now). Give em a stubber or storm bolter for more firepower.
Russes/Demolisher - Any IG player knows.
Conquerors - Transports mainly and Infantry. Not quite as bad as I initially thought since they are more mobile due to the fact that they can fire all weapons after moving 6 inches. I generally use em for the "spearpoint" to suck up fire for my better tanks when moving along board edges or into the teeth of heavy weapons. Otherwise I say they are a regular Russ with a modified cannon for the Commander.
As for doctrines I have tried them all and usually take Heavy Armor, Rare Troops (Vanquisher, Exterminator, Conqueror), and Ace Sponson Gunners. A tank heavy list in a tank heavy army is fun. The sponson gunners are the only ones I found worth it but experimentation is required.
I honestly have no idea if this is useful to you list wise but regularly works fro me (somewhere around 70% win rate).
