Not quite sure where to post this inquiry, as there aint a Ordo Xenos sub-forum around.
Anyways, I'm assembling a Deathwatch team led by a codicer.
Now according to Deathwatch customs, they wear Black power armour with the the distinctive Inquisition Shoulderpads on their left, Chapter colour & icon on their right.
Now with this codicier of mine, I was wondering if he should also be in Black coloured Deathwatch power armour, or should he follow Codex Astartes guideline of Dark Blue power armour. Its an interesting choice, as personally i feel both colour schemes would still look pretty cool. But I was wondering about the fluff accuracy of it all.
So I thought that I'll throw this out for discussion & debate amongst the more experienced and knowledgable folks out here at LO.
PS : On a side note, i think a Codex regulation Yellow Tabard would look abit weird with Black Power armour
Interesting question. I think that at the very least, you should have the silver left arm, that's whats most signifying, I think of the Deathwatch.
Maybe, what you could do is paint one half of the armour blue, and the other half black. I dunno, I've never seen a Deathwatch Librarian mini...
Post some pics when you finish.
I have one and I am going to paint him black as I want him to fit in with the rest of my Deathwatch. At the end of the day the Deathwatch do not follow any other uniform conventions of their parent chapter so I don't see why this would be an exception.
As for the tabard I would recommend a base colour of deep red like the one used to mark Deathwatch Weapon casings as it will complement the rest of the colour scheme.
I have used the old librarian with force rod for mine, and he has a librarian marking right pad so I have had to put his chapter marking on a combat shield on his bolter arm, still I think it works quite well.
Oh yea, Red definitely goes well with Black, for the tabard. I'll probably paint the codicer half halo symbol on the tabard too
Deathwatch regulation wise, he'll probably need to don Black, plus the Inqusition shoulderpad on his left.
I was thinking though, perhaps a splash of blue somewhere, just to make him stand out, and in acknowledgement of his unique psychic gifts and position
perhaps blue on his chest plate
hmm ... black, blue, red
(where are my colour pencils, and sketchbook??)
The Death Watch aren't necessarily subject to the Codex Astartes. They are an inquisitorial formation and draw marines from many non-codex chapters as well as codex ones. With that in mind I'd think that the Librarian should be black, though he may have some other markings on him to suggest his rank and powers.
On a side not I actually think yellow goes just fine with black, the sharp contrast is surprisingly not over the top whilst still being something that makes the models stand out.

It reminds me a little of the Deathwing terminator librarians, which I have seen done a few ways -- one was to paint it the traditional blue with a Dark Angels shoulderpad, which you could do by using a Deathwatch shoulderpad on a blue libby.
I've also seen the Deathwing libby done in Bleached Bone, matching all the others, with a blue shoulder pad signifying his is a librarian, essentially the reverse of the above, which you could also do, I'm sure.
Personally, I wouldn't try to do "half Deathwatch, half librarian," because that might look a little silly, I think. Ultimately, I think it would be equally fluffy to go either way. You just have to make up your mind as to whether it would look better all in blue or all in Deathwatch colors, then just make sure at least one shoulder pad matches the other side, if you know what I mean.
My wife says to tell you foos that every color goes with black. Gawrsh! But seriously, all black with a little blue in there, maybe throw in the Codicier symbol like you said...just a blue kneecap or shoulder, it'll be hot stuff.
Do what you want, personally my libbies are all black (different Chapter though) and I have no problems with it and no one I've faced has either. But then the blue can look pretty cool if done right and it will look especially good with the other Deathwatch, it'll help the libbie stand out.

I'm pretty sure that Deathwatch Librarians still paint their armour black and keep a shoulder pad for their Chapter colours. Other than that, the only thing that really distinguishes them from the other Marines is their psychic hood and force weapon. If you want, you could give him a tabard to make him stand out a bit more. A few purity seals here and there...you know. That sort of thing.
