Alright, I've gotten my mostly-Gk army up to around 1500-2000 points, and I'm looking to add some inducted Guard for variety. I was thinking two Armored Fists to start with, then eventually a Russ and a Sentinel squad when I can afford it, but now I'm not so sure what to induct. Which would you prefer to induct? I have no Land Raider, only one Dread, and a lot of standard FAGK in my army, so The point of these guys is anti-armor:
Armored Fist (204)
-- 9x Infantry (1x Lascannon, 1x Plasma Gun)
-- 1x Vet Sergeant (Plasma Pistol/CCW)
-- Chimera (Heavy Bolter, Hull-Mounted Heavy Bolter, Smoke, Extra Armor)
Infantry Platoon (273)
1) Command Squad (3x GL, 1x Plasma Gun)
-- Junior Officer (Power Weapon, Stormbolter, Surveyor, Carapace Armor)
2) Infantry Squad (1x Lascannon, 1x Flamer)
-- Sergeant (LP/CCW)
3) Infantry Squad (1x Lascannon, 1x Flamer)
-- Sergeant (LP/CCW)
I'm actually thinking that two Platoons might be a better choice, considering the enourmous amount of heavy weapons I can bring in (at the trade off of mobility and 70 points). Any suggestions?
I pretty much decided Inducted Guard was the way to go about a month ago because I play shooty eldar a lot, and let me just say that it's just not a fun game against them. Inducted Guard lets you field much more anti-tank weaponry as well as giving you the kind of numbers you need against a shooty army.
A couple of things:
A Flamer in a Lascannon squad is kind of wasted points as most times you will likely just be firing that Lascannon at a tank while the flamer and lasguns go to waste. Because of this I like to put Lascannons in the Command Squad, although i also like keeping the guard cheap so as to maximize the actual DH contingent.
Straight Lasgun squads make great screens to rush your Knights up or your Terminators if you don't feel like deepstriking. The only problem is they die off in droves. Another thing I'd recommend is a standard bearer because keeping a Lascannon squad from falling back is pretty key.
Plasma guns on guardsmen suck, Meltas are very good though, especially for the DH! Maxing out on a Junior Officer seems kinda useless to me, but then again, I like em cheap like I said.
Putting a Lascannon in a Chimera is a great idea for a mobile tank hunter, but I actually like concentrating the whole unit... An armored fist squad with a Heavy Bolter in a Chimera with 2 Heavy Bolters and a Pintle Mounted Heavy Stubber and the 6 mounted Lasguns means a whole lot of dead infantry. If you aren't fielding a Land Raider or something like it (Leman Russ) then the Chimera likely won't last long...
Another thing would be to give your sergeants lasguns rather than the 2 CCWs because your Grey Knights will likely be backing them up and they should be sitting and shooting, might as well add another lasgun in here and there...
If you like deepstriking guys and playing scenarios like Patrol, I'd suggest a Sentinel w/ Improved Comms... The sentinel can play along with whatever other unit you'd usually play and it increases your chance of getting those Grey Knights/Callidus/etc out when you want them. It's also great for tying down weak assault troops like Banshees, Orks, etc.
Hope that helps
Hmmm. I'm curious. I just started inducting guard myself as well. I find it really useful like gonadsgo said for using as a screen. I've only fielded 1,000 point games so far. I have 1 inducted guard platoon. My command squad has a lascannon, two grenade launchers and a junior officer with a storm bolter. I usually put them someplace to block a lane of fire.
My 1st regualr squad has an autocannon and 1 grenade launcher. They also usually stay back and are a screen for any psycannon heavy grey knights I may have.
My 2nd regualr squad has nothing but a grenade launcher. As gonadsgo said, cheap squad for a meatshield.
So yah, I agree I think the flamer with the lascannon squads is kind of a waste. However, I'm curious about inducting an armored fist ANd a regular platoon. Everyone i've met always does 2 of one or 2 of the other. But looking at what you put up, I'm really really intreagued. How does it work? i'm also not to hot on the chimera rules being able to fire as it moves and all.
