I bought the new "Veterans MkII" at Games Day yesterday (among other things), and as I had noticed before, unless I am very much mistaken they are not legal for a Veteran Squad.
Basically this is because with the exception of the Bolter and the Power fist / Bolt Pistol Veterans, the other 3 models would all have to be Sergeants to take their combinations of wargear.
2 of them have plasma pistols and power weapons - while one marine may have a power weapon, 2 certainly can't, and plasma pistols cannot be bought for the squad so are sergeant only.
1 has a single lightning claw - a Veteran can take a pair of claws, but not a single one.
Does anyone know any way these could be fielded in one squad? Because I certainly don't - not even for players of Dark Angels with the new Veteran Squad rules.
One of my playing group suggested that if you buy the Marines Terminator honours it gives them access to the armoury, but that sounds unlikely and far too good to be true to me!
If they are just meant to be a box of Sergeants, surely that should be how they were marketed?
crisp, as has been pointed out in the eldar threads, you may wish to check the respective codex for your answers. you will find them all in the sections you are asking about-vet squads, command squads, and vet serg upgrades.
16,000+ of Eldar (only need flyers)
7,000+ of Nids (want heirophant)
6,000+ of Space Marines (need rever titan)
4,400+ of Cygnar (all models for the faction)
1,500+ of Legion (just started)
Err... I have checked the Codex. Or to be more accurate, I've checked Codex Space Marines, Codex Dark Angels AND Codex Blood Angels.
What I'm saying is that unless I am missing something, the Codices do not support the squad you get in the box.
This is an unfortunate case of Games Workshop Being Stupid. It happens disappointingly often.
There's a thing called counts-as rules. Just say the plasma pistol is a regular bolt pistol. Or a high-powered S4 laser pistol that's only available to veterans. In other words, make crap up.

The Codices together provide the options for two Plasma Pistol and Power Sword wielding Space Marines in a single squad, and for a single Lightning Claw wielding Space Marine. All these options are for non-Sergeant models. See "Codex: Blood Angels", p. 17, and "Codex: Dark Angels", p.83 respectively.
Yet I see neither a way of including all those models in a single squad nor the possibility to use one of the models as a non-Sergeant Space Marine in a "Codex: Space Marines" army.
Also would I opt not to put my Plasma Pistols on Power Weapon wielding Marines, as the costs for a casualty due to overheating would be immense. So though this is possible it does not make too much sense.
I did wonder if they were a legal unit way back when they first appeared.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
Note it is called 'Space Marine Veterans' not 'Space Marine Veteran Squad'! It's just an assortment of cool models to use as sergeants, command squad members, anywhere you want to toss an extra-nifty mini.
Personally, I love the one with the bolter.
But yeah, its essentially just a bigger version of the vet-sgt blister.
A veteran squad is essentially just a bunch of fancier looking tac marines, with some fancier weapons.
I have come to the same conclusion, and I can accept it... but they still have been marketed as a veteran squad. White trimes, white helmets, white badges.
I think it's just contradicting with my sesnse of Codex Astartes bashing really
I have decided to use bolterman as a Devastator Sergeant, he looks cool with the scanner pack on. Gonna have to file off his Crux from the kneepad though cos I'll be damned if I'm paying 15 points for a sergeant whose mission is to stay away from the enemy and essentially act as an extra life for a lascannon!
