Hi, I would like ot hear some background stories about the kind of imperial guard army they play. But, here I want to hear anything and everything, the story, the origins, the founding, the composition, favorable upgrades, and even pictures and short army lists to give everyone the basic idea. Even the unit that you love/hate using, me personaly I hate rough riders. Put a gun to my head, and I will still refuse to use them. Overall I realy like reading stories that people came up with, some creative others of course not. Reason behind the thread is, me going to GW last night. I saw a nicely pianted IG army, so I asked the guy how he named his regiment and whas the fluff behind it. He replied "Umm, I call it imperial guard, I dont know where they are from". That made me kinda sad... Anyway, I will start. I want to hear EVERYTHING.
Regimental Name: Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU)
Field Of Expertiese: Operation in extremely hazardous environment, with high levels of radiation and toxins. Known for their fast deployment, and deadly aircraft support guided by the ground combat teams. Know for adapting extremely fast to every type of environment and combat situation. Well trained, and obviously heavily armed. Doctrines are rare, but when used its either cameleone, Iron discipline, sharp shooters, conscripts and veterans/storm troopers.
Inspiration: Video game Half life Opposing Force, love the game and absolutely love the urban marine uniforms that deploy via Osprey helicopters. I am repainting my entire army with the color scheme, looks fantastic but is quite a long process. I even followed the fluff, as my men enter battle via flyers and have aircraft support. (Represented by FW models)
Composition: HECU has access to virtually everything known to imperium. They do sometimes incorporate units from WH and DH like assassins and termies, but only on rare occasions. The regiment always uses master vox, to allow squads to function independently. However due to the natures of missions that HECU handles, the regiment can not afford to include things like rough riders or Ogryns into their lines. These are usualy too bulky or noisy to field on the field of battle. The regiment also restrains themselves from the use of extremely heavy machinery and will never deploy battle tanks or armored personel carriers without the acknowledgement of ground recon teams. The initial stages of the invasion usualy include heavily armed infantry securing primary landing zones with constant aid of air support and orbital bombardment, followed by deployment of battle tanks and considerable fortificational equipment.
- Rifleman - the bulk of the HECU are regular riflemen. These men were equipped with standard lasguns and kevlar helmets integrated with M40 gas mask with closed circut breathing system and anti-toxin drugs to maximize their combat potential to perate in every type of environment.
- Machinegunners - to provide additional firepower for HECU squads, specially trained troopers were assigned to them. In teams of 2, they operated Heavy bolters, missile launchers, auto cannons and lascannons with deadly precision to provide fire support in combat against various targets. They commonly wear exposed ammo belts on their vests and numerous additional belts in their backpacks, along with a tripod to mount the weapon on.
- Sapper - demolition specialists of the HECU commonly use shotuns and grenades. Overall, their role is similar to standard riflemen whose role is to hit the enemy with a hail of lasfire, while the sappers eliminate them at close range.
- Combat engineer - one of the most important support soldiers in the HECU, the engineers wore regular HECU uniforms and armor and were equipped with blowtorches, goggles and an assortment of other essential all-terrain engineering equipment. They are usualy armed with handguns or light weight shotguns, as the amount of equipment they had to carry prevented equipping them with lasrifles.
- Combat medic - members of the HECU that underwent medical training usually displayed little combat prowess, as their main role was the preservation of life of HECU troopers. They commonly wore kevlar helmets along with a backpack and harness filled with medical supplies. They were armed with lasrifles only however, just like engineers their primary role is to tend to the wounded rather than providing heavy fire.
- Communications Expert - in charge of inter and intra squad communications, equiped with a lasrifle/shotgun for support, these men are experts in communications. Wether its about coordinating an attack, or setting up a stout defense, they are one of the most important members of every squad.
- Special Weapon - armed with the deadly plasma/melta gun, these marines have specific roles at the times of engagement. When facing armored foes, the squad will provide heavy cover fire for these marines so they could close in on the enemy and hit them where it hurts most.
Generally, a HECU trooper was outfitted with a full body urban camouflage battle dress uniform (lacking any distinctions or patches to prevent identification of the unit) with a Powered Combat Vest and an LC-2 harness carried over it, a military backpack and heavy boots all designed to maximize his combat effectiveness without sacrificing his comfortability. Other equipment was assigned depending on the trooper's specialization and preference. Combat knives, tactical radios, sidearms, gas masks and hand grenades were issued to all soldiers.
- Sniper - in order to secure open spaces , the HECU deployed high qualified snipers. Armed with sniper rifles, they usually nested themselves in alcoves and niches and camouflaged their positions with camo nets.
Every single one of the troops above is carefully represented in every single infantry squad. I.E every squad has a medic, engineer, sergeant, communications expert, heavy weapon operators, special weapon as well as 3 standard lasgunners
Hazardous Environment Combat Unit initialy originates from planet Origin located on the far easern fridge of the galactic empire. The planet itself is a fortressworld, designed specificaly to train men in all aspect of combat. Certain parts of the world have been significantly altered after years of undying conflict with forces of Tau, Orks and tyranids. Many areas still have extremely high toxic and radiation levels, after constant nuclear bombardments and at the same time remain perfect training grounds for HECU who make excellent use of various chamecal inhibitors and their personel training to make most use of such environments when charged with countering a specific type of foe. Even though the main planetary forces are carectirized depending on the environment the operate in, the HECU make up the elite of the Origin and are deployed in situations when other military forces have failed.
The HECU are a highly organized combat force, composed of veteran soldiers with access to high quality equipment and weaponry. They are capable of rapid deploment of a large combat force in a short amount of time into a designated area.
The HECU's method of operation was based on the principle of speed and control. Troopers were carried and deployed from VTOL Valkyries into combat zones. Their immediate orders were to secure landing zones and only then proceed to secure other facilities. This is done with constant fleet support, wether in a form of air or orbital strikes, the aircraft of the HECU is constantly nearby, prepared to delived a critical blow to the enemy and allow the HECU close in unchallenged.
There is also a darker side to HECU's operations... due to their status, they operate outside any official imperial guard force and as such there is no supervision over their actions. HECU do not accept any kind of outsides intervention from commisars, inquisitors or ven space marine commanders which sometimes resulted in conflicts between both sides. Their goals are achieved via many different methods, usualy involving brutal slaughter of any military or civilian personel (Friend or Foe) that stand between them and completion of their mission.
Pictures and Color Sheme:
The Image that gave me the inspiration. I simply fell in love with the look.
The Identyne Strykers commonly known around Argos V are a brutal for Hire Company run by the rich imperialists. Effectively run by top bids of imperial worlds wanted for protection. May it be a convoy, or a life term contract for each enlistment and recruit. The Identyne Strykers are die-hard veterans and can withstand almost any situations due to direct finance and fresh men. Known to the imperium as a mercenary tribe they have sensed greatness in value and employ Identyne Strykers commonly for convoy protection.
Argos V is where most recruits get conscripted into serving for a life term, and most conscripts usually die within their third or fourth year. With life expectancy short during a campaign new recruits are trained and drilled constantly some make it past the conscripted phase and earn stripes. Those who have them give them a little more respect, but not much, since duty and honor is earned in battle.
The Strykers currently range from 15 – 10 battle companies depending on how depleted it comes to be after a grueling campaign. Favored weapons have found to be the highly valued plasma weapons and las – technology.
It has been noted by an overseeing commissar - “The Identyne’s fight with such ferocity it is a wonder how they can withstand each other in close proximity.”
Due to the capitalization of the Strykers doctrines can vary widely over a period of 15-20 years depending on who may be employing the Strykers.
With Lord Valatine in current command and watch dog of the latest campaign on I’char 4 doctrines have been noted by observers to include – Die Hards, Light Infantry, Sanctioned Psykers (for hire), Storm Trooper Divisions and Cameoline
-HONORABLE MENTIONS IN BLITZKRIEG PAINTING COMP-
"THAT I.G. GUY WITH THAT OVERDEVELOPED TRIGGER FINGER"
Common guys, doesnt anyone want to share/show off their stuff??? And besides, it would help a lot of new players since that would give them a rough outline of what people like to use as well as what kind of paint sheme they like.
I'll do mine!
They are the 7th Cadian Rifles A.K.A The Big Boys. They are just one of those armies that defend Cadia and invade other planets in the name of the Emperor.
They have an urban camo paint scheme and this is because they do most of their fighting on the industrialised worlds and in city fighting.
The men of the 7th Rifles use heavy bolters, missile launchers, mortars and Autocannons but they frown upon Lascannons in their infantry squads because too many people went blind from looking at the flash of the lascannon without their eye-wear. They also do not have any plasma weapons in their infantry squads because Plasma guns are rare and powerfull weapons so these are reserved for Veterans and Officers. The 7th Rifles use the close order drill because they have a high belief in mateship and they also use basilisks to bomb the enemy into submission and to destroy enemy fortifications. They would never use rough-riders on horses because they think it's cruel to ride a horse and they would never employ ratlings because they think hobbits with rifles is a silly idea. The veterans in the army are drop troops and they parachute down (not grav-chute) into the battle, while they do use armoured fist squads to race around the streets of the city and for extra fire power.
My inspiration was GW fluff, the movie 'A bridge too far' and just what I liked.
So that's it, Litte Plasma, No Lascannons and a whole lot of riff raff.
Ok my guard army is inspired by the novels Execution Hour and Shadow Point about the Gothic war.
The crew of his Divine Majesty's ship "The Lord Solar Macharius"
The Lord Solar Macharius is a dictator class carrier ship.
The ship is commanded by Flag Captain Leoten Semper.
I am trying to use as many of the named characters from the book as possible such as the ships commissar Kyoba and Borusa Sempers personal bodyguard.
The doctorines I use are as follows
* Conscripts- the majority of the 10,000 crew of the lord Solar Macharius are press ganged slaves.
* Iron Discipline- The navy has a very strict chain of command and strict disciplinary measures so an officers word is law.
* Engineseers- The ship is a giant mechanical construction with engines and small craft to service, so the engineers may get tied up in boarding actions.
* Close order drill- A space ship is a very confined space to fight in and you have to rely on the man next to you in the close dangerous boarding actions.
* Either Drop troops or Sanctioned Psykers I am unsure which yet.
The army has a large number of troops and the only vehicles used at the moment are sentinals (powerlifters in preference) to represent the utility vehicles that work on the hanger floor. If I am able to afford it ever I may add forge world fliers like marauder destroyers to the army for apocolypse games.
Sorry is a bit brief my break at work ran out. Can provide more details to those who want, ie painting schemes and army lists and such
The Mortis System, long considered a dead system and disregarded during the first crusade of the Emperor during his crusade to re-unite humanity. This was not far from the truth, Mortis by all standards was dead, its sun all but extinct, the planets seemed to harbor no life, other than the flows of magma and ash that pulsed upon their surface. However, the Emperor was wrong to disreguard this system, for it held life upon is ash-covered surface, a civilation of men who hunted upon the great Magma flows of the planet to survive, learning to adapt to the harsh acidic air and intolerable heat from below and cold from above. It was here that the Imperial Crusade founded Mortis Prime, the largest planet on the system, and the only planet to support life. Hive worlds soon prospered, as humanity met their cousins for the first time - men clad in bulking armor plates, unafraid to challenge any who dared entered their world. With the introduction of military technologies and a hive culture to the Mortians, Mortis Prime soon became a major forge world for the Imperial Guard, her first batches of armor and rifles going to the newly founded Mortian Hellbourne, named for the world of which they came.
At first, the Hellbourne seemed fearsome fighters, whose implaciable advance on the training fields seemed terrifying at first, men who were not afraid to die lined shoulder to shoulder, weapons drawn. It was not until the Hellbourne was taken off-world that their fatal flaw was discovered. The acidic and corrosive gases that gave the Imperial Navy hell in retrieving the Hellbourne was also their lifeblood. It seemed that they had adapted to breathe the fumes of their volcanic home world, and could not survive without it. The oxygen breathed by their brothers was like a halucenogen to the Hellbourne, it played tricks with their minds, and stole their focus in battle. It was this realization that forced the Warmaster to grant the Hellbourne permission to use chem-inhalers, allowing for them to breathe the fumes once more.
The 1st and 2nd Hellbourne, later accompanied by the 3rd joined the Imperial Crusade to reunite humanity, and the purging of the xenos and chaos that dared to interfere with their efforts. Fighting alongside the Tanith First and Only, the Cadians, and the Vostorian Firstbourne, the Hellbourne quickly grew in popularity among their peers. Although the men from Mortis Prime showed no trace of humanity, thier utter refusal and staunch dedication to the Imperial Creed brought them respect and honour among their fellow regiments. Mortis Prime also grew with this success, as the world quickly grew as a vital supplier or arms, muntions, and vehicles, a world often ignored and often considered the safest place within the Empire. It did not take long for the minions of chaos to learn that this world was unprotected, and would be an easy kill to please their fetid gods.
Success came at a price to the Hellbourne. Many of the 1st and 2nd regiments had won thier rights to colonization, and longed to return to their homeworld. It was at Paxis IV they earned this right, when the Mortian lines were reported to have taken the hive city back from the cultists in one sweep, while the Cadian Mobile Artillery pounded the remnants of resistance into submission. The 1st and 2nd regiments, having served 2 years longer than their brothers in the 3rd, were the first to take leave for Mortis Prime, which was in truth a short trip from the Paxis system, a fact that led to the demise of Mortis Prime. It was not long after their victory in holding the city while the Imperial Navy arrived that the 3rd Hellborne were granted the right to return to Mortis Prime for some well deserved R&R, something the men longed for. What they found was a nightmare, one that every man within the Hellbourne has yet to forget.
The ruinous powers had found their way to Mortis, their spies within the Imperium speaking of a forge world as an achilies heel to the armies of Man. They scruck, not long after the 1st and 2nd Hellbourne returned. The fall of Mortis Prime took exactly 3 months, after death and the taint of chaos had taken the majority of the warrior population, leaving Mortis Prime defenseless against the invaders. The ship Emperor's Guidance had just arrived in the Mortis system to watch, as the chaos behemoth bombarded their planet, watched helplessly as their world, their home burned, and imploded upon itself. Their families, their friends, every Tie the Hellbourne had was severed in one stroke. The Emperor's Guidance only just escaped unoticed, to return to the Imperium, carrying the last of a world within her holds, a group of men whos anger and hate for chaos, both its taint and those that would spread it, had boiled forth within their hearts, and they swore an oath that until every man amongst them was dead, they would fine the bastards that destroyed their planet, and they would personally drive down their throat and kill the very beast that robbed them of their world.
3rd Mortian Hellbourne
Prefered Special Weapon: Flamer
Prefered Heavy Weapon: Autocannon
The Mortian Hellbourne dress cosists of black fatigues and carapace armor, silver-lined chem inhalers, and their tell-tale glowing red eyes from the lighted goggles that adorn their faces.

Heh - its always nice to be able to show off your ideas, so I guess I'll jump on the bandwagon!
Anyway, I have a love for the forces of the adeptus mechanicus, so my IG army runs along those lines.
The Gryphonne IV 'Cold Forge' Skitarii regiment is a light infantry explorators regiment (light for skitarii, that is), one that had been formed just 1 year before the overunning and eventual total destruction of their home forgeworld, Gryphonne IV, by the Tyranid menace.
'Cold Forge' - now so named after the destruction of their forgeworld - were outbound towards the eastern fringe as part of a rogue trader's explorator fleet when they recieved news that the Gryphonne system was under attack, and that the Adeptus Mechanicus was making a full stand. Changing heading, the fleet made haste to reach their homeworld and join the defence of the holy forge.
When they finally dropped out of warp, the newly formed regiment was dismayed to see the system littered with the wreckage of explorator and mechanicus ships, the debri so numerous and scattered that a new planetary ring was forming in orbit around their homeworld. Their home was scorched and ruined, the Skitarii regiments consumed, the ground littered with the ruined hulks of the blessed Titan legions. A massive defence had been held, but to no avail - and the skitarii regiment was too late to join the fight, as the great devourer had already moved on.
Now, without a homeworld, the regiment is returning to its mission of exploration, but with a bitter urgency, in the search to somehow regain their honour for failing to fight for Gryphonne IV, and in the hope that somehow they can continue its legacy.
And if they should ever get the chance to engage the tyranids, well...
Regiment name: Gryphonne IV 'Cold Forge' Explorator Skitarii.
Doctrines Typically used:
Techpriests: Also obvious.
Drop troops: (The explorator fleet is incredibly well equipped with sophisticated teleportation systems, able to 'port in entire armies of infantry within minutes).
Priests: Techpriests either in training, or part of the Adeptus Mechanicus clergy.
Grenadiers/Storm Troopers: Members of the explorator's private army, often seconded into the Skitarii regiment.
Iron Discipline: With strict conditioning (often since birth), bionic uplinks and unshaking faith in the omnissiah, the explorator Skitarii would never question the orders of their superiors.
Close order drill: The skitarii fight in ordered, well synchronised ranks of flesh and machine.
Xenos fighters has not been taken, for whilst the cold forge hate the tyranids, they have yet to face them in full scale conflict, and as such have no real experiance in tackling such foes.
You will have noticed more than 5 doctrines here - sometimes I use some doctrines, sometimes not. I wont tend to pick and choose my doctrines depending on my oponent, its more a matter of fancy than anything else!
As the remainder of a once glorious forgeworld, they still have access to many heavy tanks and artillery, as well as lots of plasma and heavy weapons. Their bionics are more varied, however, as men die and are replaced from various worlds, and the equipment used is also sourced from many worlds.
The techpriests themselves will often take to the battlefield, and whilst their primary mission is to ensure the holy battle tanks and other equipment survives, they are also often found directing units of heavily equipped gun servitors.
The officers themselves are not so highly decorated as you may find in other regiments, however the regiment is new - give it time!
Typical 750 points army list:
HQ: Junior officer (poweraxe +BP), 4 grunts (ccw/lp), standard bearer, priest with eviscerator.
Elite: Techpriest Enginseer, Storm Bolter, 3 heavy bolter servitors, 1 plasma cannon servitor.
Troops: 6 man Grenadier Squad, 2 plasmaguns.
Troops: 6 man Grenadier Squad, 2 meltaguns, veteran sergeant with powersword.
Troops: Infantry Platoon,
Junior officer (ccw/lp), Heavy bolter
Infantry Squad, Vet sergeant with boltgun, Plasmagun, Missile Launcher
Infantry Squad, Sergeant with ccw/lp, flamer, autocannon
Fast Attack: Sentinel with lascannon.
I can field a 2000 point army, in which I inlude leman russes, a basilisk, full 10 man storm trooper squads, a veteran squad, demolition charge special weapon squads, heavy bolter support squads, heavy flamer sentinels, chimeras etc...however I am still converting and painting much of this. Soon there will be a baneblade also
Here's a few pics, for those interested:
A few random servitors (serving as guardsmen):
Every model apart from my sentinel and the grenadiers are converted in some way. Its taken ages, but I think its worth the effort!

"Pickles, the drummer, doodily doo. (Ding-dong, doodily, doodily, doo.)"
Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
Nice Skitarii! ;Y
I use either guard with allies or take them as inducted troops for DH/WH.
Name:I haven't come up with a name for mine yet. Its sort of been on a lower priority since =I= foot soldiers are more of the faceless type.
They're Inquisitorial troops, under the directly control of Lord Inquisitor Veneris. His second in command is Interrogator Nastor. They primarily operate from Black Ships
-Iron discipline- The regiment's officers undergo rigourous psyco-conditioning, emotion removal, etc to ensure that they can stay resolute in circumstances that would strike fear in the heart of a normal human
-Close order drill- The troops fight in disciplined ranks
-Sharpshooters-Better training than normal guardsmen, but not quite IST or marine grade
-Drop troops- Often times threats will be severe and must be handled with haste. The troops will deploy by gravchute
-Grenadiers/Stormtroopers (or ISTs)- Inquisitorial storm troopers
-Carapace armor- The regiment has access to the well stocked armories of the =I= and will utilize higher quality/better equipment than the average soldier would recieve.
-Consripts- Inquisitors have the authority to requisition all imperial servants, from lowly scribes to even the High lords of Terra. Veneris takes advantage of this and will sometimes use the local population to help bolster his ranks... or (more often than not) use them as distractions and meatshields to protect his more valuable assets. In reality, I just use a mix of necromunda redemptionist brethren and Cadians because I think civilians would look out of place.
Standard colors are red gore fatigues and black body armor. Robes are usually red gore as well.
The regiment is headed by the colonel. Interrogator Nastor usually joins the command squad(represented either by an elite =I= or a commisar)
Sometimes the Lord Inquisitor himself will oversee the operations, and will bring along an escort of his trusted retinue.
The regiment is made mostly of elite heavy infantry.
hvy-hvy bolters/autocannons, lascannon
Vehicle Pool: this normally consists of
-Chimeras, sentinels- when the regiment is mechanized
-Valkyries, sentinels- like drop troops, but when the regiment's gunships stay around and fight
-Russes- armored support when they dig in and shoot
Other: Because their master is an inquisitor, the regiment will fight along side other imperial forces on a regular basis
-Veneris has ties to both the Ordo Malleus and Hereticus. As such, it is not uncommon for the regiment to have grey knight or sister support
ex. Exorcist trio St. Ansgar, Path of Radiance, Exuro Hereticus, and the grey knight LRC Everto Daemonicus
-The Black Ships can be used to call down orbital bombardment when needed
-Sometimes Veneris's friends in the Ecclesiarchy will lend him some of their strange penitent machines
-On numerous occasions the regiment has fought with marine chapters like the Blades of the Emperor during large battles. However they don't enjoy Blood Angels or succesors after witnessing some of those marines "succumb to khornate possesion"
-Currently tech priests are constructing the =I= a hellhammer/baneblade and his own Black Ship. Both should be completed by the end of the year
No pics since the camera's machine spirit is being disagreeable right now
*WraithGuardian: "HECU do not accept any kind of outsides intervention from commisars, inquisitors or ven space marine commanders which sometimes resulted in conflicts between both sides." With the exception of the space marine part (since the chapter would probably be happy that they don't have to waste their lives on guardsmen), how would this work out? I'm not sure regiments are allowed to do that; commisars would probably get all nasty and start doing their execution thing, and inquisitors are even worse. If they're really in a bad mood and wanted to, they could declare HECU excommunicate tratoris, then wreck Origin even more than it already is just because that HECU trooper over there failed to give the inquisitor a tissue when asked. of course, this is an exageration, but still*

There is no such thing as a plea for innocence in my court. A plea for innocence is guilty of wasting my time. Guilty.
- Inquisitor Lord Fyodor Karamazov
Regarding Skitarii, I love the colors and the overall fluff. Overall you got the idea from the main rulebook right? I think I saw something in the fluff section that mentioned Skitarii but never actualy defined what it meant or who it represented. As for vehicles, do you paint them with the same colors - red, yellow, brown? Also, if tyranids devastated the homeworld why didnt they consume everything that remained? They usualy eat the worlds dry before moving on the next system, I cant see how they would keep metal and debris behind. (Still full of nutrients and elements and all)
