So Iíve been battling a friend who plays thousand sons and necrons. I can beat his necrons, but now that the chaos got ÖehmÖ overpowered? Beating his sons is proving exceptionally difficult. Even with that divine guidance people keep telling me to useÖ well, what the hell is it going to do against an entirely invulnerable army?
So Iíve decided to ask for some suggestions, maybe others here have fought the sons with their sisters and have some tactical advice to share? I may have a game with him this weekend and I hope to win. Last game was closer than usual so I think I may have a chance this time.
Now, buying a new unit is possible but Iím a little short on spare change at the moment. Here is what I currently have to use.
--A jetpack canoness
--5 grey knights TERMINATORS
--a few independent character models for inquisitors and such
--30 battle sisters in teams of 10, all teams with meltas and flamers
--(6-10 are usually Celestians, recently Iíve been using them in an immo)
--a VSS, 3 storm bolters, and a melta in a dominion squad, immo. Inquisitor has been tagging along lately.
--I finally built 5 seraphim and found a way to incorporate them into my army, by removing the repentia.
--the repentia are now arco flaggelents or however you spell it. Iím using a full team. I heard they preformed better so Iíll give them a chance.
--3 penitent engines
Coming to around 2000 points.
The inclusion of seraphim and the repentia to arco update I have not used yet. But Iím confident that will help me very much.
So I told him I updated my list a little. Which, looking back on it, was probably a bad idea, since now he may change his list as well. But here is what I know he has and will most likely use.
--2 chaos sorcerer lords.
--3 teams of thousand sons
--a predator with twin las
--LOTS OF DEMONS. I know he likes to use a greater demon as well.
--and I think he mentioned possibly picking up some terminatorsÖ
The demons have succeeded in pissing me off immensely several times. A common tactic of his is to rush the raptors in and drop them right in my face, and they are always within assault range. As of yet I havenít been able to counter this, save for my canoness swooping in and giving my squad a fighting chance.
But what I really donít like is bolt of changeÖ used with warp time. He pops my tanks really easily and if he doesnít, he does anyway because of the reroll. And the twin las sitting in the middle of his army doesnít make matters any easier. The only way I could think of possibly disabling his tank would be to send the seraphim in on a suicide mission with melta bombs. Or rush in my MM immo and hope I can get lucky. I donít like to rely on luck. -_-
Given what models I have my AA has been limited to close range, and he shields his predator with his thousand sons really nicely.
Eh, but anyway the tank isnít my main concern. Itís defeating his army.
So there is my predicament. The thousand sons.
Any help is welcome.

Your arcos should do well if they don't get shot up to much as should your seraphim remember to stick to your cover with the arcos and to move your seraphim behind cover until the turn you charge. Canoneses do with the usaul setup of Cloak of St Aspira, a blessed weapon and a jump pack are really good at holding up special characters. keep every thing in cover as much as you can and you should rush your celestians with a melta and immolator at the pred.
The daemons im not sure as how best to counter as i've only versed them once and they were the stronger version from the old codex and got lucky and beat them off with fire warriors in combat.
get the culexus assassin if you can find one...they would do amazing damage against thousand sons as the sons all count as psykers and the assasin speciality is psykers especially the animus speculam which get +1 shots for every psyker within 12" i just got one for cheap since they are so unpopular amongst the normal population of players
THAT'S JAKOB WITH A 'K'!
So you have no Exorcists, and one Immolator only (aside from 3 PEs)? Rhinos? Heavy Bolter Sisters?
I think that you are still going to outnumber him (as TS are about twice the cost of a basic SO, but in 2000pts games you will need some new models. PEs for example are better as you get more of them...
Look into wargear list and pick some anti-magic gear for your =][=. Hammer of the Witches sounds good too... How about using a DH Hero to take out his Daemon (that would only be one new model). You could also take the =][= from the DH Dex ih you like their gear better... Maybe getting a Land Raider for your GKs (opr are you deep striking them) would make them more of a threat plus you could fire at that Predator?
TSs have AP3 bolters, so all their guns have no problem killing your Sisters and they sport the 4+ inv now... Stay away from them, till you take care of the more imminent targets...
First off, sorry my list looks a little weird, I was in a hurry. Lol.
The grey knights are termies, and I have 2 immos.I was once a tau player. Unfortunately I never got that lucky. But Iíve heard incredible stories about fire warriors doing things they cant do lol. Like charging a SM squad, beating it, and forcing it to fall backÖThe daemons im not sure as how best to counter as i've only versed them once and they were the stronger version from the old codex and got lucky and beat them off with fire warriors in combat.get the culexus assassin if you can find one...they would do amazing damage against thousand sons as the sons all count as psykers and the assasin speciality is psykers especially the animus speculam which get +1 shots for every psyker within 12" i just got one for cheap since they are so unpopular amongst the normal population of players
Heh, I looked over most of the assassins but never really paid much attention. Using him could be interestingÖ though he seems a little too good. I know my opponent well, and know exactly how he would react to itÖ heíd call it cheap and get angry. Which I find hilarious, since he plays NECRONS and SONS. I should use the assassin just to piss him off. Lmao.So you have no Exorcists, and one Immolator only (aside from 3 PEs)? Rhinos? Heavy Bolter Sisters?
I kinda wanted to avoid the exorcist, at least for now. Iím a veteran tau and Iím kinda trying to stay off long range heavy support. The heavy bolter sisters I do find appealing though, I love the heavy boltersÖI think that you are still going to outnumber him (as TS are about twice the cost of a basic SO, but in 2000pts games you will need some new models. Well this is where it gets tricky. I have my inquisitor as Ordo Malleus right now, for some anti-demon. But he is sons and has a lot of psykers.
Now with the way his army is set up, he has a lot of both. Lots of psykers, and lots of demons. What Iím thinking right now is, maybe take an anti-demon inquisitor and an anti-psyker assassin?
And I would LOVE a land raider crusader, but the ally rules are really weird. Iím pretty sure you are not allowed to use heavy support, and the army builder wont let meÖ so I donít think itís legal. Oh, how I want a crusader thoughÖ. And a dreadnoughtÖ
Thanks for the help. I think I have a plan now.
Go character crazy with the canoness, brother-captain, assassin, and inquisitor. Pack on tons of anti-demon and anti-psyker and not worry too much about my numbers. What do you think?
Both DH and WH Inquisitors can take Land Raiders as transport options...
But it doesn't say they can take Land raider crusaders with that all important assault vehicle option
Assault ramp? All Raiders have that,,,
the crusader only assualt feature is that it would have frag grenades on the front
THAT'S JAKOB WITH A 'K'!
So I had my battle against him today.
Canoness with blessed weapon, inferno pistol, cloak, jump pack, litanies of faith.
5 Grey termies, doesn’t matter what they had -_-
6 arco flaggeywageys
Ordo Malleus inquisitor with psy-cannon and daemon hammer, termy armor, all that good stuff.
3 teams of 10 sisters
5 seraphim, veteran with powers sword of course, blah blah
5 storm bolter dominions in a heavy bolter immo
a multimela immo
and 3 penitent engines
1 chaos sorcerer lord
1 chaos lord
possessed (who got feel no pain…………………)
3 teams of sons
predator with twin las
So I won the deployment roll, so I knew where his pred was going and set up my MM immo to counter it. There was a huge impassible temple on my left flank and with the pred on the right it made things tricky for me. I hid behind cover for the most part and pushed up my assassin on the left using infiltrate, who was supported by the seraphim. Overall it was fairly basic.
I won priority as well, which made me happy. I moved up the assassin and seraphim on his left, my canoness and MM immo on the right. Moved everyone else to get in range. First turn sort of sucked. A seraphim smacked her head on the temple (it was huge and I had no other option but to move through it lol.) and my MM immo was behind cover and out of LOS on everything. But there were some kills, my assassin got a son or 2. Would have been more if I remembered to fire my inquisitor! Ugh.
He retaliates by killing a few arcos, wounds the assassin, and I think he may have got another seraphim. What really pissed me off was the pred blew a penitent engine, and then he spewed bolt of change at the rest. With warp time in effect. (which by the way is broken as ****.). Does he get to reroll vehicle penetration? Well he did, and immobilised the remaining 2.
Second turn was much more fun. I get my tank out, within 12” of the pred and blasted it down. I pick of a few sons here and there and rape his squad on the left with the seraphim and assassin. But he still had about half left after the charge and all. I killed his raptors down to 2!!! Well, my canoness also charge the possessed, while looking back on it I wish I hadn’t. But I moved her up in range of the pred (cuz my MM immo ALWAYS misses, yes even with twin linkageness and I wanted to ensure that it would be dead, so was counting on the inferno pistol) so with her out in the open I kinda had to, or else get eaten. Ugh, I killed a few (went first with litanies. And didn’t spend a faith point. BOOM.) but the feel no pain kept most alive.
His turn was terrible, he missed horribly with one squad. Needed 3s to hit right, got straight 2s and a 1. nothing lmao. He killed some things, like some more arcos >_<. And for the most part not much else happened, close combats were uneventful. And he forgot to deploy his demons, yay!
So at this point I’m like, ok, its time to win this thing. I’m doing great! Thumbs up, lets do this… LEEEROOOOOOY…. I roll a 1 for my grey knights. They’re content chillin wherever they may be. And, that’s the last time I’ll ever deep strike anything ever again. And oh no, not just cuz they rolled a 1 once, not just this turn oh no… last game, several turns went by… 1, 1, 1…. Wasted points. This game this was not the first time they rolled a 1. omfg. My deep strike luck sucks! But ANYWAY, I’m charging in and pwning some noobs and all. But now I’m starting to get worried. I realize that I’m at a severe disadvantage with how things were positioned. Hard to describe. But my arcos finally got in assault range and assaulted his lord. So im like.. ok man, that’s 3 (there were only 3 left >_<) D6 power weapon attacks CHAAAH!!!! But he’s like, pfft, whatever noob.. initiative 5. and im like wha!!? And he killed them. Great. You see, it was because of WAPR TIME really. Though he did strike first, he had to beat toughness 5. He hit and all, but then he rolled poorly on wounding. Only one. But then its like.. Oh oh oh… WARP TIME. BAM *kick to the crotch* all dead. Grahahbvargnepi
So I wasn’t too happy about my penitent engines getting hit early on, my grey knights ignoring me, and the arcos just kinda there to die. Wasn’t cool. So now I’m really worried.
He does some stuff, like.. you know, kill entire squads with moving-stationary-rapidfire shots and all that fun stuff. Luckily he forgot his demons again. Like he needed them. >_>
So all I took to counter him at this point has been ineffective. I got the pred, but damn… just damn..
When it was my turn again to salvage what hope I had left of winning, my grey knights roll a 1.
SO im like, its cool, you can chill you know, like let your cute little bolter toting girlfriends get PULVERIZED. Its no big deal, its cool, whatever your doing is more important, than um.. helping. I understand.
So after losing myself in a rant it finally dawned on me how badly I was beaten. Lol. I went down with a fight, I killed his sorcerer lord with my dominions… (BAM, DOMINIONS.) that’s right. But god damn, those combats that began at the beginning of the game just wouldn’t end, my assassin and cannons were locked up. I locked him up yes, but damn… It it wernt for the feel no pain on his possessed I woulda cut through them but they just wouldn’t die! Thousand sons do not need Nurgleish support!
When it was his turn again he finally put down his demons. Game was over.
So I still can’t beat him…
Can’t really blame too much of it on bad luck though. But sons are just ridiculous to fight against. Even with the assassin I didn’t fair much better, he was locked up the whole game. The seraphim helped, probably should have used the to lock up a second squad. I wasn’t counting on the assault doing that poorly, I thought it would be like, sweep over them and into the next squad but that wasn’t the case at all. I couldn’t find anywhere if the assassins attacks in CC were power, are they? And the sons player wouldn’t let me use life drain unless I was in base to base. But the rules say, in combat… which means, engaged in combat… not base right?
My anti-demoness went to waste since he like, didn’t bring em out till we had to pack up..
Omfg, this is getting frustrating. I may play him again tomorrow and I need to revise my strategy big time, since it didn’t work.
It was fun of course, had to good time and were plenty of laughs, don’t get me wrong I’m not out to win at all costs.. its just I cant let him win all the time lol.
I think I need to start playing more defensively, I’m too aggressive for my own good. Doesn’t seem to work well with sisters.
