Ok, so I am going to be playing against my friends mech tau very shortly, and I am not sure how to go about the battle. I have played him with my Necrons, so I know his general strategy (Fish of Fury), but Necrons and Swift as the Wind Bike Marines are a quite different.
Now, I can't say exactly what he will take against me, as he has access to a large amount of models, but I can assume that there will be a lot of nasty MEQ killing ionheads and suits.
As for my list, I don'y have access to a lot, but could proxy a squad or two. Here is what I have for 1850, tho the battle is most likely going to be 2000pts
Chaplain on bike w/ bp, termie honnors, frags
6 man bike squad with furious charge, 2 meltas, attack bike w/ either gun, serg with p fist/bp, skilled riders
3 x 6 man bike squads as troops with skilled riders, 2 meltas, attack bike w/ either gun, serg with p fist/bp
10 elite devistators w/ infiltrate or tank hunters, lascannons or plasmacannons
my plan is to get my bikes up fast first turn with turbo to give them protection, while laying mines on the suits or tanks so that they can't safely jump-shoot-jump, then turn two I'll be in assault and melta range.
As for changes, I was first wondering which would be better in your opinions, heavy bolters or multimeltas on the attack bikes? I was thinking the veteran and 1 regular squad with heavy bolters, while the other 2 regular bike squads have multimeltas to hit the tanks and suits hard if they aren't assaulting.
Also, I was thinking of adding a Librarian with Fear of darkness, either by drop po or on bike, but I am not sure just how effective that would be vs tau. I know he wont have an ethreal, but tau LD is still decent. That you do think?
So, what are your thoughts on my strategy, or suggestions on how you would take on mech tau with my list? I am really worried I am just being out gunned and denied my speed by his armies superior fire power and use of nasty tactics.
Thanks for any advice and help you can offer.
The chaplain could use a bolt pistol. The extra attack never hurts
Same as above for the bike sarges.
I think multi meltas would be better for the attack bikes because they penetrate suit and tank armor much better than bolters. Also bikes with heavy weapons (and rapid fire) can shoot and assault, provided the gun is mounted on the bike, which the multi meltas are. But if there happens to be enough regular tau, vespids, kroot, etc then I would take the attack bike or two of heavy bolters.
I think that lascannons will be good on the devastators. Plasma cannons cost more, hurt the tanks less frequently, and because of the size of battlesuits, the blast isn't very helpful.

in fact, With the exception of commanders (shas'el and shas'o) and strain leaders, everything in the tau army is LD8 or lower.
Your plan for Castellan missiles on the crisis suits is innovative, but weight it against the effectiveness of vengeance missiles. I think it would be more effective to simply assault them, and use your whirlwinds to lay down AP4 death on his army. Castellan missiles are after all only effective when moved over, which you cant count on happening more than once. Also, as you will be taking the initiative to bring combat to him, you run the risk of encountering your own mines. With the exception of the suits, everything is armor 4+ or worse. Indirect fire is a nice way to get around his devilfish if he pulls off his fish of fury as well.

I'll think about the benefits of each. Good thing is, I have until they are on the table to decide.
thanks for the input.
You are lucky. Bike armies are some of the best to be used against mech. Tau. You seem very ready to beat his army. Just make sure you have a couple ten man dev. squads to take out his tanks.

As LittleBlueMan said, you are very lucky to have bikes in this situation. My best friend used to play Tau, and I, not owning any bikes, had no way to catch his suits other than deep striking assault squads, which often went awry.
3500 points Blood Pact
1000 points Deathwatch
3000 points Dwarfs
Okay your devs are best off with missiles (which you should have plenty with them coming in the marine box), instakils suits and blast better against troops, not to mention theyre much cheaper.
Librarians are great since their FW have to take it at ld5 or 6, DS them with a squad of termies and watch the results (which are very tasty i assure you).

As for the Librarian, I want to keep him cheap, as I only have like 150 pts to bring my 1850 list up to 2000, and a bike army is a bit lacking in model count. Besides, a Librarian on a bike is more fluffy in this situation, so it all works out. And also, with that mobility and IC status protection from shooting, he shouldn't be in any danger of being shot till he gets into cc, where he is pretty safe.
Well, thanks again everyone. I think I got a solid list and strategy now.
