I was just wondering, in order to even play any WH 40k game, I would need 2 junior officer squads, 4 normal Imperial Guard Squads and 1 Command HQ(I normally take colonel/Heroic Senoir Officer). All of this costing a total of 390 Points!. I normally play 1000 Point games so this takes up a large chunk of my choices because I refrain from using normal IG in any way possible (The only Use I know them for is for Cannon Fodder).
All I wanted to know is am I right with the points or is it less, because it seems really expensive copared to my other friends armies troop choices. (one has tau and the other has Eldar)
Also, Once I've taken that one IG platoon, Can I take a Armoured fist squad or Conscript squad for the other troop choice?
Side Question: I'm having problems with the rules for Infiltration. Does Infiltration allow you to move before the game has begun with the allowed troops? Or is it like DS where your troops are held in advance and you can deploy them 12" away from any enemy troops for certain(meaning they dont scatter)?
You could take two Grenedier squads wieghing in at 100 pts... Two platoons of infantry is alot of guys, with alot of weapon options..thats why there so expensive... otherwise everyone would just take mass ( well more ) guardsmen and rush.

if you focus on guardsmen more than anything else, you will find your army to be the cheepest (points cost). Add heavy weapons to your army and those infantry plattoons are great. No other army can get so many big guns like that.
Yes you can take armoured fists or conscript platoons as your second troop chice, provided you have a normal platoon of minimum size 25. infiltration does not allow you to move before the game begins, just deploy up to 18 away from the enemy. if you take special weapon squads you can get four ordinance weapons in 1000 points, demo charges plus basilisk and a russ. In 1k points sentinels are also a good choice, and they can move before the game starts.
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel allright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace, and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.

I'd like to clarify a few misconceptions that might arise from previous posts. Infiltration lets you do a variety of things all dependant on the scenario being played! SOMETIMES its a free move before the game. SOMETIMES its deploying anywhere not within 18' of an enemy. SOMETIMES its no benefit at all. It all depends on the scenario. Read the scenario rules carefully before each game for how infiltrators work.
And if you want to minimize costs take the Grenadiers Doctrine and get two squads of five Stormtroopers. 100 Points is the cheapest you get in guard.
if you want the lowest points cost id go with 1 Platoon with 2 squads and i platoon of conscripts, no weapon upgrades, 10 man for 40 points, but if you want GOOD choices either go for Grenadiers or your Infantry Platoons with Sharpshooters.. or mix it up

If you only consider your Guard Infantry to be "cannon fodder" you're way off. Well actually only half off.
Are they expendible, yes, but for a price. And that price should be victory (insert patriotic music).
Seriously, the basic Guard platoon is the Heart of your army. It gives you:
1. Big guns, to take out those big things
2. alot of little guns, to help kill little things
3. alot of warm bodies to keep your enemy busy
4. alot of squads to help take objectives
5. they're CHEAP
They ARE cannond fodder, but they're also much much more than JUST "cannon fodder". They give us our biggest advantage, numbers. In a 1k battle i usually run a *minimum" of a 80 guardsmen w/ guns and some armor.
just take a guard platoon and an armored fist for you 2 troops. max out the guard platoon (5 squads & 7 remnat), now you're talkin
Nononono, if you want cheap but big infantry, think concripts, 40K in 40 mins? no problem, two 50 man conscript squads! your opponent cant roll enough dice to kill 100 conscripts in 40 minutes
Everything you have been told is a lie!
you've gotten a head of your self Cheredanine you have to take an infantry platoon before you can take any other sorts of troops (with the exception of grenaiders)!
